Art Block by KitteaMutt

I'm getting really frustrated because I'm really unhappy with my art style and I'm not really satisfied with the Kippy species type designs anymore. To add on to that, my pen nib is almost gone and I don't really know what I'm going to do when it's reached its limit.

It's really stupid but I feel really incompetent for hating my art style and hating my own species.

So I don't know when i'm going to post more art, but it's probably going to be requests. And don't be alarmed if the style for the art changes from piece to piece as I experiment.

I always see frustration as a sign you're improving your skills and learning. You're obviously seeing something you want to improve subconsciously, but you're not sure what or how.

One thing I have noticed is a lot of your characters look to the left. Try mixing it up and have them look up, down, right, or away from the viewer. :) I'm guilty of this too a lot, so it's not a bad thing or unusual. If you notice you're drawing the character looking to the left again, just flip the canvas. It's also good to experiment other styles. I remember in college my character design class had a project where we chose two types of styles to draw a character in (like Fairly Oddparents style, Bruce Timm, etc. etc.). Maybe try that for fun, even if it's not quite like the style you're trying to mimic XD

So yea, don't feel stupid or anything. Also: what kind of tablet and pen nibs did you need again? I remember you mentioned it once. I can do some searchins and see if I can find a place that sells them.

Really sweet, thanks <3 I'll definitely keep all of those things in mind.

Ah, I have a Tooya Pro Penpower. They don't sell nibs in the store website, but they do sell the pen. And i really don't want to pay $25 for a pen I don't need just for the possible 3 nibs it comes with. I've been trying to convince my parents to let me get a PayPal (That ship still hasn't sailed btw) so I can't raise money to buy the Intuos Pen I want to get.

They don't really find it sensible to buy a new tablet when mine works fine just because the other company sells nibs, and they keep pushing me to buy the pen.

I love my tablet, I really do, and I'm sorry if I get a new tablet that the nearly $200 they spent on my tablet would "go to waste" since I won't be using it anymore, and I really appreciate them buying it for me, but I really just can't go on without a nib. This nib wasn't even very good. I've had this tablet for... maybe... three or four years? And since I've had problems like (during the very early stages) I didn't have a scanner to work with in order to scan my artwork to trace, or (earlier this school year) I got it taken away because I drew too much. When i first got it, I estimate I drew with it about... say, 10-15 times, and nowadays, since around December, I've been using it maybe 3-4 times per week.

I know people who draw almost every single day, drawing more detailed and complex things than I, whose nibs haven't run out yet. It's really frustrating.

      // mini rant over

Sorry about that. I don't know, I guess I'm just getting really touchy because my nib is almost gone and I don't know what I'm going to do after it's gotten to the point where if I use it more, I won't be able to pull the nib out. Sure, I draw with paper and pencil, but my mom took away my sketchbook as well and we ran out of printer paper just yesterday, and I don't have any extra notebooks I can just doodle in. I probably have to lay my tablet aside for a couple of months (though the temptation will be great, and I'll probably give in) because I have to use my tablet in a fundraising event. So, unless I somehow get 70 (give or take) bucks to buy my Intuos Pen off of Amazon, in the next month I'm pretty much toast.

Aww :( I understand the frustration. I would email the company and ask them if purchasing the pen really does come with 3 extra nibs or not, then if it doesn't and someone tells you it does, you have proof and they will have to give them to you regardless. It's possible the nib is running ragged sooner is maybe you're putting too much pressure on it. I am really guilty of this, and just had to replace my nib, and the tablet is about as old as yours (3-4 years). As much as it sucks, I would cave for now and get a new pen for now. Then when you're able to get money for yourself, just say 'oh the cable on my tablet seems to be breaking!', which forces you to buy a new tablet. :P

It's also frustrating your parents took your sketchbook away - I get where you're coming from, so no need to apologize about them mini rant! Are you still in highschool (I'm pretty sure your profile said 16 XD)? I remember when I was in highschool I would doodle on the backs of my notebooks or on the inside covers, I actually saved a lot of it that I have stored in a giant envelope haha. I am sure there are some scrap papers laying around the computer labs or old tests / worksheets you can also use to doodle on (I was guilty of this a lot, too). And as much as I hate to say, I think your parents are hesitant to let you do the paypal thing because you are young and such. It's dumb, I know, but hang in there. You're on the right track artistically so for the time being, focus on getting better (or consider doing art for Amazon gift cards, I don't think you have to be 18+ to have an account?), and maybe make a sketchbook on the weasyl forums to post your sketches. The people there are super nice and knowledgeable, and have tons of helpful advice. Patience (despite being an asshole) is your option right now.

On another note, maybe talk to your parents about the paypal thing. No one said that they wouldn't be able to help you manage it and learn about money management crap. It's like starting your own little business, and putting it that way might sound more favorable. Tell them you'd like to have it as extra income in addition to whatever job you get in the future, like how people sell things on Etsy and such. It might take awhile to get it setup initially, but it's a huge learning experience for you :D It's beneficial.

I use my tablet pen like I would my pencils, which is with a controlled and careful amount of pressure. I really dislike pressing hard when i'm writing or drawing, since I use mechanical pencils a lot and tend to make the lead too long, so I've adjusted to drawing/writing with a careful amount of pressure. I'll make sure to pay attention to see if i really am pressing too hard, though, but I don't really think I ever did, besides pushing it down once to get the nib in securely.

Yes, I'm sill in high school (-dies-) and yeah I suppose I'll just get a new pen :/ Unless I magically happen across the money needed, I can't fake anything because then I'd just have no tablet at all xD Plus, if I did come across the money, they'd need legitimate proof, and i don't really have any ideas on how to fake a faulty tablet x3

I'll look through my loose papers and see if there's a backside of something I can doodle on.

And, yeah, I'll start making crafts and stuff like I planned (I make small felt blankets and rope toys for animals, and i make plushies too. I'm in the process of making one of those galaxy-in-a-bottle things) to a while ago, and just say it'd be for that, too. My own little mini-business. That's sure to sway them, at least a little bit.

Thanks so much for your advice and... and just everything. You're a truly wonderful follower and i appreciate you a lot c:

Aw you're welcome XD I know how frustrating things can be so if I can be of some help to someone to alleviate it, then I will :D

Also: If your mom ever has garage sales or someone in the family or a friend, try selling some of the things you make there, especially if you want to make plushies and stuff. And if it helps, make a mock business plan to show your parents; your goals, what you plan to sell, where and how, and any struggles that you know you will have to overcome. They're honestly pretty easy to make, but this should help your parents show you really want to try. I should see if I have my old business plan thing from my business class. It's like the cheesiest dumb thing ever but my teacher liked it. XD

We don't do garage sales ever haha x3 Too much work. We just donate everything.

I'd like to see that business plan heh. Sounds interesting

I think I lost the file - I had a Mac before and when I copied the files over they got messed up, and somehow that file did not copied over. >< ALL THAT WORK. AAH.

Anyway, http://www.bplans.com/e-commerce_internet_business_plan/executive_summary_fc.php has some samples. They're generally 10 pages long but can be shorter, and they don't need fancy graphs. It's just a paper form of what your business will be, do, who it's for, etc. :)
