Really, mining companies? by MrWarden

No doubt some of you have heard of the water contamination in southern West Virginia by now. Well, it just took a turn for the worse: http://www.wvgazette.com/News/201402110032

For anyone not able to read the article, the same mining company that accidentally contaminated the drinking water in Southern WV in the first place, just put roughly 100,000 gallons of mining sludge into the Kanawha River. Unless you happen to need things like Manganese, Selenium, and other heavy metals in your drink (and if you do, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?), this is a very Bad Thing.

Really, mining companies?

West Virginia just needs much tighter environmental regulations, in the first place. The only reason companies keep poisoning the state is because they're so desperate for any kind of business, and the higher ups are so corrupt, that they're being allowed to get away with things that other states simply would not tolerate.

Which is a damned shame, because I grew up in West Virginia, and it really is a gorgeous state.
I'd like to go back, one of these days.
But these people are just shitting up the place.

I'm in north-central WV myself, well clear of what happened in Charleston. I live close to where the Sago mine accident happened. I think one of the biggest obstacles in that regard is that the companies tend to hide behind bankruptcy law rather than actually make the mines safe. They do that to avoid being held liable for their mishaps. Of course, the pols are no help whatsoever either.
