Givin' by Ruggy

I'm currently strapped to an apheresis machine, donating platelets, and typing one-handed. Probably one of the least suspicious reasons to type one-handed, really.

It's a generally accepted Good Thing To Do, donating blood things, but it feels like a relatively passive way to do Good Things.

Do y'all do volunteer type things? If so, what do you do? I'm kind of on the lookout for other stuff I can do. (Though it seems most opportunities involve a lot of direct contact with people, which I am terrible at.)

I may or may not be somewhat light-headed right now... Man am I craving a burger something fierce.

Well I have never given blood but I do some other volunteer work, basically the archery club, some work events, community center events sometimes, babysitting, and sometimes I help people with artwork even if I'm not much help at all ... at least I tried xD

Well, I've benefited from some of your art helpin', so. I appreciate that! :3 And serious props for babysitting. I don't think I could tolerate it.

What kind of community center events?

      • Link

Yeah... The baby sitting was a favour, I dont really like to do it... Lol,
Sometimes its like a fair, crafts or food and they need posters made, and tables set up, signs yadda yadda. Not hard, there are certain types of volunteering i dont do though. I believe its taking away from people who could get paid but thats my opinion. This come from exp when my paying job was taken by volunteering students because they are forced to do x amount of volunteer hours. I guess its got a sore spot but its totally true, sad.

Lol im not sure that art helpping counts as volunteering though, well maybe xD

I used to volunteer with a cat rescue. Most of the interaction was with cats though there was still some interaction with people who would ask stupid questions like "can I borrow a couple kittens for the weekend". Eesh.

Now I volunteer as the dealer room head for a convention. A lot harder than cleaning up after cute cats and a lot of contact with people!

I'm struggling to think of the rationale behind asking to borrow a kitten.

Oh mannn serious props. I gotta respect anyone who volunteers for organizational stuff. You ask me move box? I move box. You ask me drive car? I drive car. Dig hole, plant tree? I do those things. Ask me call people on list? I have panic attack. Is no good.

Once I'm back in New England, going to be volunteering at a stable for the hell of it, and so I can afford to actually horseback ride again haha. Not a very people-ish sort of work, thankfully.

Oh my goshhh that sounds both tiring and really rewarding.

I'd be tempted at the thought of volunteering at an animal shelter, if not for the fact that I would come home with animals on occasion. :I Ain't nobody got the money for that!

I occasionally lend my home and futon to homeless or drifter types that need a place to shower, eat, safely smoke their grass, etc.
Other than that not reeeeeallly. I should though. Volunteer hours go a long way in applying for internships.

Braver man than I. But I can barely walk around Dallas in broad daylight without suspecting that I'm going to get mugged, so. :<

What I need is volunteer opportunities that don't actually involve any real interaction with the people I'm trying to help. Assuming I'm even helping people. I could be helping dogs, but the kinds of dogs that need help mostly just need homes, and I would end up a crazy dog lady right quick.

Yeah, it comes with a sense of wariness. Strict rules have to be in place.
And I know that feeling. Me, I'd like to go to the shelter and help them there. Feed, water, clean, etc.

I've given blood before, though it's been a while since I last did it. The last time was before I moved to the city I'm living in now. Back where I used to live I would also volunteer to help watch the toddlers on Sundays at church and went on a couple of mission trips when I was younger, though for those we went out of the country. We helped build houses and spent time with the orphans in a little town.

I don't actually know what community type opportunities to help people even exist out here. Seems like most people I end up doing helpful stuff for are usually family members back where I used to live - house and pet sitting for my mother while she's out of town, helping whoever move, helping to babysit my little cousins.

But I know that my mom and a friend of hers go and help out down in Galveston with the homeless stuff they've got going on there every now and again, stuff like handing out meds and giving checkups and other things. She actually usually works in a back area or something and organizes and bags the meds or something like that, so the only people she actually interacts with are the other volunteers. I'm thinking about heading down there with her next time, though the way she's described how it all goes down makes me nervous. I'm not exactly fond of big crowds or frantic activity. I do want to help people, though.

I used to give blood until I started regular medication which would prevent me from doing so. Also discovered that giving blood is probably the easiest way to get over a needle phobia.

As of now I also do really "passive" ways of good-doing, namely giving to the Red Cross and other charities. On a couple of occasions I've volunteered for hospital disaster drills, which are probably the most fun forms of volunteer work if you like improv theater.
