Some stuff about here by Sidian

So I'm obviously posting on Weasyl. I'm trying to keep up with cross-posting everything I post to FA over here as well, though generally there's a bit of a delay. This isn't for any reason other than that I'm a little lazy when it comes to getting art posted. I'm also not reposting EVERYTHING because there's some things that I'm just kinda meh about...
I will not be reposting my ENTIRE gallery of older works. If you want to see anything that I've posted prior to what I have posted here, it's all up on FA - furaffinity.net/user/sidian
At the moment I can't be arsed to figure out linking to people on here. I know it's possible, but I don't know if the people I've done art for have a weasyl or what, so the names posted are their FA names.
I don't really care for the thumbnail system here. On FA, I glance through my submissions inbox and can generally tell if I'm interested in what's there without clicking on the majority of the pieces there simply by looking at the thumbnail, and clean most of it out without loading full images. Maybe I'm weird, but given how many people I watch and how busy I am, it's handy to be able to clear it out so fast. So because of this, I'm going to start making my thumbnails on here as big as possible so you can tell if it's something you wanna click on or not. :P
I have some issues with this site, some of which I've voiced on Twitter, but I'm here, and will keep posting and waiting to see how this site evolves.

I think just about everyone is unhappy with the thumbnail system, so I'm hoping that gets taken care of quickly. It is nice to be able to pick a custom thumb in the submission page, but it isn't nice that for non-square images, the thumb just doesn't make sense.

I do find it frustrating that many people (present company excluded, of course) have different names over here - so, yeah, it can be tough figuring out how to refer to people.

Maybe now that more than three people are talking about the thumbnails, they'll do something about it.

Well, for whatever reason I certainly hope so. I had actually been a member of Weasyl for a while, and not being an artist had no reason to upload. When I reposted my gallery from FA, it actually took several pics and a hate-on for the default thumbnail to figure out what was going on. So, yeah, now that people are talking about it - let's hope it gets fixed. I am VERY interested to see how quickly issues get addressed here, vs. say another popular site. I'm sure a lot of others are watching as well.

Well, I don't know if anyone's mentioned anything about thumbnails back in 2012 - I think they may have lost some of the suggestions made back then when the site was still in closed beta. Or maybe enough people have an issue with something but don't speak up about it.

          • Link

Oh, I think they're hearing all about it now :-)

            • Link

We're fixing the thumbnails in an upcoming site revision.
Also, in regard to the "forgetting bugs from closed beta" - that may have happened, but we have a public bug tracker where you can see what we're working on: https://redmine.weasyl.com/. That said, the forums (https://forums.weasyl.com/ -> Site Issues board) should still be your first port of call :)

Yeah it's all well and good to have tidy little thumbnails in someone's gallery, but in the submissions inbox it's pretty frustrating for someone like me who doesn't like having to load every image before clearing them out.
I WISH there was a way to load an image, check a 'remove' box, and have it load up the next one in your inbox. That would be awesome but I've never seen a site do it. Maybe too hard to code.

          • Link

Not sure I completely understand. You mean custom thumbnails or just bulk uploading of submissions? Am confused.

            • Link

Like... I open my submissions inbox. I click on the first image to load it. Somewhere there is a 'remove' button. I click that, and it goes away, removed from my inbox, and the next image in my inbox loads up.

              • Link

Oh, I got you. So you could more easily do a batch upload, of sorts then? Hmm, yeah, I can see how that could be a good thing. But also how it could so easily be abused. Or misused by accident. But it is a good idea, yes. Have you suggested it on the forums?

                • Link

Nah it's too hard to explain. I'm not sure you're quite understanding fully, for example. -.-

                  • Link

Yeah, I probably am not understanding. If you want to try and explain, would be best to do it on the forum though. Not that I would be unsympathetic (or uninterested) though. I obviously don't understand though :-(

I screwed up an earlier response, but one of the admins came into the thread to say "we're working on it" and give some helpful links. You might want to take a peek and maybe respond to his message with your request.

Tagging users is a bit counter intuitive now that they've switched to markdown. It used to be name, but now it's [](user:name), which gives you something like this: lothaekor. Throw in an exclamation mark before it all to get an icon... lothaekor

And I definitely agree on the thumbnail comments. It's my biggest gripe right now with the site.

    • Link

Ugh, yes, that's one of my pet peeves too. Sadly I don't know enough about the Markdown parser to fix it. Short-form user linking is on our to-do list though --> https://redmine.weasyl.com/issues/109

Thanks for the feedback. I'm sure you've heard plenty on the thumbnail issue already. If you look at this thread Sidian has another suggestion that you might be able to help with. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful but I don't think I understand what she is saying.

The staff has heard the community complaints about the thumbnails, and they're working on fixing them!

Also, do you use Chrome? If you do, there's an extension called Waxpost that lets you repost from FA, SoFurry, Inkbunny, or DA to Weasyl with only one or two extra fields you need to fill out on the submission form.

I do not use chrome, I use Firefox. Also it's a pretty big deal for me to be posting on another site at all, let alone trying to figure out some fancy add-ons. waves her old lady cane

Ah damn, it was worth a shot. Glad to see you making the effort nonetheless c:

I heard thumbnails have been confirmed to be overhauled at some point in the future.
This said i wouldn't mind a sort of system where you keep the square thumbnail which work great on the screen layout of mobile devices, but would provide a sort of pop-out preview of the full image when moving the cursor over the thumbnail.

    • Link

Yeah leaving the thumbnails the way they are would be great if you could mouse over and pull up a full, somewhat bigger (not even necessarily full size) version. My roommate has a plug-in that does that for the web in general, so it shouldn't be too hard a thing to implement.

      • Link

Pretty much. And it woudn't screw up the current layout which is actually -great- for mobile devices.

Heck, my last message was actually posted from my nintendo 3ds.

I agree with the thumbnail thing, THANK YOU for making bigger ones.

People have been wanting the thumbnail system changed for months. Weasyl devs really need to get on this one.
