Thoughts on Weasyl so far by Eskiworks

While I'm liking the simplicity of this site, and the new-ness is really fun, I am eager for more development before the site goes alpha. The message center needs refinement, as it stands it's less than user-friendly. I'm also pretty opposed to the public tagging system. The potential for abuse is HUGE, and it seems like a moderating nightmare for site staff and for page owners. Plus it takes control of my work out of my hands, which I don't think is very fair. I've voiced my opinion about that in the appropriate places on the forum though, I hope they change it in the next update. There are other things I hope they work on/change, I have visited the common suggestions thread on the forum and personally would want to see most or all of that implemented. I look forward to seeing what comes next for this site!

In the meantime I've been filling out my gallery at the pace of five uploads per day. I'm not uploading everything, I'm actually being quite choosey about what goes here. Even with being choosey, it's a LOT of stuff! I'll tr to keep it for five or six per day so I don't flood your message centers here.

I put in a temporary banner too, until I have time to make some JUST for Weasyl. =3 I would like it to contain and American Eskimo, probably one drawing or doing something art related. Maybe just covered in paint because honestly they aren't very graceful creatures, haha! But it will be Eski related, yes. =)

Thanks for the warm welcome to those who have watched, commented and faved! <3

They have an option that no one can remove tags, so I hope it branches out for choosing no removal and no add. For the moment, I'm fine with people adding tags because I can always remove tags, but at least no one can remove tags just because they don't feel like work is 'good enough' for a particular tag.

    • Link

I dunno, I'm really not ok with the current arrangement because there isn't even a system in place when you're notified of a tag change. So if I cared, I'd have to patrol my gallery piece by piece to see if anyone added tags. Even if I was notified of every tag addition, that's another aspect of my page I'd have to police that I shouldn't have to. I desperately hope the change this so I can opt out of public tagging, I don't want to have to deal with strangers tagging my artwork FOR ME. XD

      • Link

Yeah and I get that, it's not something everyone wants to deal with (not to mention the ways it can be used to insult and troll :/ ) so adding a full opt out really seems like a solution that would benefit a lot of people.

  • Link

I fee like the tagging system could turn out good.... but there should be some kind of approval system

    • Link

That would be nice, but I still want to be able to opt out of public tagging completely. It would mean fewer messages in my inbox that would be automatically ignored, haha!

  • Link

So yeah as said before, in da settings you can find a checkbox which says "Only I can modify tags", use it and its all yours ^^

  • Link

WTF?! Actually my bad and you are right, there is only options so people cant remove but can add o___O WHUT?!

    • Link

I was going to say, I don't see that option. As of now, you can only prevent people from removing tags you've put in place, but they are free to add tags to your artworks for you. And you're not notified of any tag additions (to my knowledge at least).

      • Link

Yeah, when I setted my account I read all this stuff really fast but I even can IMAGINE that it`s possible that stranger could add something to my artworks, so I thought that this options turns off possability of deleting and modifying tags, but wow, now I`m ready to see some nice tags from my haters.

        • Link

          can't imagine, fix.

  • Link

I'm a little indifferent myself on the tagging system. I can see it being abused easily tho.

I agree that the message center needs some work as, like you said, it is not user friendly. Good news is I think it would be quite easy for them to fix.

It's time like this when I really like something but I don't have enough knowledge or skill (or a member of the team) to help make it better that irritates me. I have high hopes for this website and I hope it only grows.

    • Link

I think the have plans on fixing the message center to be more user friendly, I imagine there will be many more updates to come before the site goes live officially!

  • Link

Oh wow tags can be modified by others. I don't like that at all. I wonder why they decided to make that? I tested it out by putting LOD_was_here on your tag, then I took it away. Did it notify you at all that I did that?

    • Link

Nah, no notification! But maybe it's because you took the tag down? Try again and leave it, I can always remove it myself.

      • Link

I actually have since tested this with another user, didn't remove the tags and there was no notification

    • Link

Some sites do that because a lot of people don't tag their work at all, which makes it impossible to filter. I think a compromise would be best: Have an option where people can flag artwork as "no tags/incorrect tags" and then let the admins make the necessary changes, not random users.

  • Link

Agreed! I don't understand why the submissions/etc. page takes 3 or 4 clicks for everything to get rid of them instead of like one on the other pages. I wish it had a lot of the features Nabyn had (like the cool stuff they have for comments for example!) and I don't understand why collections is a watchable section..? I feel like I am watching people favorite things or something! I dunno.

    • Link

I feel like I'm watching people favorite things too, haha! I unchecked the collections box so I don't see people collecting stuff any more though.

      • Link

Yeah I am probably going to do the same. XD

  • Link

Several of the issues (submissions/etc requiring two separate but near-identical pages to clear once you've seen them, the confirmation-dialogs EVERYWHERE, etc) are stuff I'd expect to see on a beta. Over-cautious design in places mostly.

As for the tagging, I'm all for adding more options like "can add/remove, can add, can't modify" for the general public, all your friends, and folks you specify as separate options, with the later two defaulting to "treat as everyone else" and make that the default. So, yes, by default only you can affect your tags on your images; but give more granularity than "anyone or nobody" as well. Since I can definitely see a strong use case for artists that may end up comfortable with specific people helping with their tagging, especially foreign-language submitters since the tags are primarily in English.

And hell, I'll admit I've added a couple tags to tagless images if I run across them. Lots of artists don't want to both tagging things, it's easier to just ignore them entirely. XD

    • Link

Those are possibilities for good in the public tagging system, but I feel like it's a matter of making a feature to benefit a few that may be a detriment to many. Or a the other way around, but it's definitely something I wouldn't utilize if I had a choice. Hopefully some opt-out option will be put in place soon!

  • Link

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm fond of the "public tagging" system, either. The ability to opt out would be really, really nice.

The ability to "select all" or "nuke submissions" when deleting notifications would be spectacular, too. Having to click them one by one by one gets tiresome really fast.

    • Link

I agree, and I'm guessing that streamlining the message center is probably one of their higher priorities! I can't wait to see what happens on the next update. =3

  • Link

I agree with both the need to streamline the messaging system and the tag-fiasco-potential. Hopefully they'll fix both before the alpha!

    • Link

I'm betting they will, so far this site has been good at implementing good suggestions in a relatively timely manner.

  • Link

Yeah, I already was annoyed because someone went through my gallery and tagged a character that is not a furry... as furry. I wouldn't be opposed to allowing friends and/or folks who accepted an image as part of their collection being able to add tags. But general folks? Not too thrilled.

    • Link

Ugh, how obnoxious.... That's exactly what I'm talking about, a sample of abuse of public tagging. Here's hoping we can have the option to opt-out soon.

  • Link

i am definitely starting to see how the move to make things user friendly/simple/communal are really working against them. i never realized public tagging was a feature you couldn't opt out of, which actually feels like almost an oversight than anything. it's just bonkers that something as intrusive as that couldn't be an unchangeable feature.

started noticing the lack of purge for the submissions (as apposed to the journals and other notifications) after i started getting a flood of content from folks i am watching. in turn, after disabling the character/collections notifications, realized that there's no mass/multiple edit features for the friend/following (and instead need to edit every single user to stop following their character/collections updates, among other things). that can get tedious.

but it seems like a well documented set of complaints that i am sure will be updated in a later release.

  • Link

i pretty much agree with your assessment of the site's needs. Also, it would be nice if there was a way that one could be informed of favorites and comments on Collections one has made, so you can track the popularity of art of your characters. An option to make Collections viewable on your front profile would be nice for the non-artists.

  • Link

I have always worried about the public tagging. My thought was that tags should only be allowed to be changed by admins or friends, or have it so any changes to tags have to approved by the artist. Either way, I think it potentially could be fixed and still be awesome :)

  • Link

Ironically I tried to read this post last week and the site went down.

I haven't been on here much, but like any other site that undergoes changes it takes a tad to get used to.

  • Link

Ok I know this journal is old and maybe I've missed updates, but has there been anything done about the public tagging system yet? I too, share the concern for abuse. I draw a lot of small breasted woman and I don't want some troll tagging them as cub or children.

Is there any way to disable that or disallow users from adding tags to your submission?

    • Link

I am not sure, I'm not an admin or moderator. Best to check the forums! =)
