As for me, maybe some sort of big cat? Perhaps a Lion or a Tiger? Inspirations can be anything from "Dark" to "Light", it can be a "god" or something... I don't want to say "don't do a sparkle animal" but I feel like that sounds like I'm saying only use colors found on natural animals... which isn't necessarily what I mean. If you look at my characters, you'll see I do have some reds and blues, but they are mixed with grays/blacks/whites/brown/ etc to make them look at least semi-believable. Some bright colors (like for eyes, pawpads, claws, etc) are cool, though, unless you don't think it'd fit. (I mean look at my character Rye, she has freakin' bright blue paw pads and her mouth is just the same! lol.) Hybrids are cool too. Horns, manes (even on a big cat that doesn't have a mane) I don't like overly complicated or overly simplified characters, usually. Some sort of happy medium is where I usually go, so that I feel like drawing a character, but it's not so boring that I don't want to because it's boring, rather than not wanting to because it's too tedious. Hopefully that makes sense! Lol. I guess have fun with it is the point, after reading all that.
