Writing critiques by TheScatterbrain

There have been some journals going around with good suggestions for how you can help keep this site an active and friendly place. That's great, but you know what I think a still small site like this really needs? Heck, what any art gallery site needs: That people take the time to help each other out with what I suppose we're all here for - Art!

When I was a wee teenager I learned a lot from better artists who took the time to critique my work and make suggestions for how I could improve it. That kind of advice is invaluable and I'm still really grateful for it. Even as I have gotten better at drawing and to some extent can criticise myself, I still appreciate any critiques I get and sometimes even depend on them.
But these days I feel like we're so overwhelmed with content - it's hard to remember to slow down and really look at individual pieces of art long enough to be able to say something useful about it. Maybe that's why I hardly ever see anyone write critiques anymore. There's always more art to click through :/

I haven't been any better myself for a long time. It's too bad, all of it, and I feel like making my own small contribution to do something about it. So, I've made a little mission to dish out at least one helpful critique here every day.

While it's still undeveloped (you can't browse through more submissions that are marked for critique than what is shown on the home page), Weasyl's 'request critique' feature makes it easy to find someone who needs help with a drawing. Apparently there's also a section in the forum where you can request critique.

Anyway, my plea is, if you're ever browsing here and feeling bored or whatever, pick a submission at random and offer some help the best you can. Especially if it's an artist just starting out or trying something they're unfamiliar with.

Chances are you'll make someone happy and maybe even help them a tiny bit towards becoming a better artist :)

I try to give critique once in a while. Last time I did here though the person blocked me and used "it's my style" excuse. =\

Dang, that's no good :I Thankfully I've never had anyone react that way, but yeah, I know some people can get very upset about stuff like this.
I guess tread carefully when it's someone who hasn't outright asked for critique? But if they did, well, that's just silly.

      • Link

Yeah it was marked for critique. I think they were abusing the system to get more front page time. It certainly needs to be fixed up to prevent abuse. I hope the Weasyl staff fixes it in the future because I love helping people who want it.

It says in the Weayl rules: "... Furthermore the critique feature should only be used for content which the creator is actively seeking critique and improvement on the piece" and "Abuse of this feature (e.g. using it for advertising purposes, on items made for you, or to otherwise keep items on the front page) will result in the removal of certain site privileges."

I haven't tried it, but I think you can report stuff like this and at least have the submission removed from the critique category.
I don't know how else you can keep people from doing this. I mean, it has to be free for everyone to flag their art for critique, but as with everything else there will always be some dumbasses abusing what can be abused.

    Hear hear!

Like mentioned above, a few bad apples are very rude when receiving crits, and it kind of kills off people's motivation.

    • Link

True, but don't let a couple of bad apples keep you from ever touching apples again, you know? Sure it's not nice to be yelled at when you only wanted to help, but you can't win them all I guess :/

      • Link

Yeah, but it's hard to put 5-10 minutes of thoughtful contemplation into something when in the back of your mind there's a voice telling you that they'll probably be offended by the very fact you're even evaluating their work in the first place.

  • Link

Fully agreed! I LOVE getting critiqued on my art even though sometimes I'm not sure how to respond haha.

But like others have said, some become very hostile when critique is given (even when they ask for it). I do think that the Critique Wanted section on the front page is being used to garner attention instead of actual critique though. It kinda spoils the fun so I usually don't bother.

Like I wrote to Zalcoti it actually says in the Weasyl rules that the critique feature is only meant for situations where you really want critique and that abuse "will result in the removal of certain site privileges."
So if you ever run into something like that again maybe take a moment to report it. I guess it's the only way to teach people not to clutter the feature just because they want a couple of extra hits.

It's sad that these kinds of reactions keep people from writing critiques at all :c Don't let this turn into another DeviantART where everyone whines 'bleh, it's just my style' when you so much as hint at something they could improve.

      • Link

Oh I didn't know that! That's a relief really haha - maybe I'll take the time to write a few if that's the case (: And yes, fully agreed there.

invaluable ? But yes. I did a few red-lining/paint-overs on FA. And I honestly think that is the most help anyone could be. Critique is awesome. I've been less than good at understanding critique in some cases. But I have gotten some great help through friends and other artists.

I like this initiative. I wish to develop my own sense of what the right way of doing is before I start critiquing artists, unless of course it's issues I can help with. :V

    • Link

Yes, invaluable in the sense that I wouldn't have improved as much or as fast if it weren't for them.

I don't think you should worry so much about whether you're "good enough" to give a critique. You don't necessarily have to be the greatest artist in the world to spot a mistake in the work of the greatest artist in the world. Anyone can become a bit blind when it comes to their own work, sometimes all you need is a fresh pair of eyes.

Hm, but of course there will always be things you just don't know anything about. I can't paint with watercolours for example, so it would be ridiculous for me to try and suggest any techniques for that, but I do know a thing or two about colour theory, so maybe I could help with that instead, etc.

      • Link

No, yeah. I mean, I feel like there isn't too many things I can help people with that wouldn't otherwise be managed by ability and mileage. Critiques are great for shortening that learning curve.

Also, Quote: "That kind of advice is -unvaluable- and I'm still really grateful for it."

          Ohh, I typo'd it XD Sorry, I didn't notice.
