I'm always curious to ask this question because few know where my username originates from and far fewer seem to know how to go about pronouncing it ahahahaha
For where it originates from, my username comes from a book series called "The Age of Fire" by E.E. Knight. In this book series, "Susiron" is the name of what is essentially the North Star.
Please read this book series. If you like dragons at all, please read it. It is a 6-book series from the POV of dragons. The characters are fantastic, the plot gripping, the world very well-constructed-- basically, it's one hell of a read.
The first three books are titled Dragon Champion, Dragon Avenger, and Dragon Outcast. These three books can be read in any order as they occur during the same time frame-- but the final three must be read in sequential order.
I feel this author drastically improved how I go about looking at dragons and I will promote this underloved series to the grave.
Back to the pronunciation, I must say that I do not know how to say this word-- at least how the author intended. I once emailed Knight asking about what it meant and how to say it, but he told me he just made it up and generally pronounced it to sound like "iron" but that's all he said.
Personally speaking, I pronounce Susiron in one of the following ways:
-Sue-see-ron
-Sue-see-rinn
-Sue-sih-rinn
-Sue-sih-rnn
And which pronunciation I use usually depends on how fast or clearly I'm saying it. I kind of consider "sue-see-ron" the best way to say it, although I find myself saying it like "sue-sih-rnn" if I don't take time to enunciate.
Really though, I kind of consider it one of those words that could have a shitton of pronunciations -shrugs-
When I've had to identify you to people, I've always pronounced it soos-iron, which may be incorrect but given what you said the author told you, doesn't seem far off... I won't go into more depth unless you want it.
That's honestly probably the "correct" one, going by what the author told me, but it just doesn't roll off of my tongue well ahahahaha
It probably doesn't help that I was using the name long before I asked him, though, so I probably shoehorned my own opinion on its pronunciation far into my skull
I agree, doesn't really flow as well as the options you presented but without a knowledge of the language in which the name is based in there is no way to know what is correct. The author gave you the clue when you contacted them but as you said you'd already been using it for some time so you already had an idea of the pronunciation in your head and at this point I would say, however you feel it should be pronounced is what it is... Fairly simple from my end. :3
Oh hey! My roommate liked the books. We have them sitting around, but I haven't read a book in text in, like. Years. ;~; Just our own writing stuff.
Anyway, if it's supposed to sound like 'iron', my guess would be, like...soos-iron? IDK THOUGH.
Oh man you should seriously pick them up. You won't be disappointed!
And yeah, given what the author told me that's probably super close to the intended mark, but it just never sounds right when I say it for some reason. Probably because I shoehorned my own opinion on how to say it into my skull though, ahahahahah
Yeah, that's what he told me. |D I just haven't read a book in years. IDK why? It's not like I hate reading or stories or anything. It's weird.
Who cares LOL. It sounds like the author himself isn't even quite sure how he wants it said.
Oh no I feel you there, really LOL
I actually have not finished the last book of this series because I've had such trouble with sitting down to read a book since getting out of high school. I wanted to reread the entire series before giving the last one a go, but I'm currently still struggling through the second (as well as several other books ~ u ~;;)
Ahahahha yeah, that's what I thought, the way he typed the message x'D
Okay good, it's not just me. D: I can sit through movies and anime and games just fine, but I just haven't made it through a printed book in foreverrrrrrr.
The one thing I can read is stuff about my own characters, which makes me sound really conceited, ugh. |D But yeah, I can read the 400 pages we've got so far about them in almost one sitting. IT'S WEIRD.
Oh, but it's always kind of weird trying to pronounce things when you've only read them before. We have a character named Dimas, and even though the most comment pronunciation of that name HERE is like Dee-maas or something, we do it more like Dai-mus. A friend didn't even get it right until we told her. |D I always wonder if people are pronouncing my other characters' names wrong too.
LOL I WONDER THAT ALL THE TIME!
I use a lot of Latin words for things and I try to pronounce them how my old Latin teacher taught me (but I've likely forgotten some rules so who knows how accurate I do it)
so I have a character names Sapiens that I pronounce Saw-pee-ens
And then Ineo-- In-e-oh
Pisces - Piss-kess
Etc, etc
I also thought it was Sue-see-ron, good to know I'm not entirely off the mark! Thank you for the book recommendations, I'm usually really picky about what I read, and fantasy is a favorite genre of mine, along with dragons playing a major role.
Eheehee awesome! >:D
And oh man no problem. It is such a good series, particularly for those interested in fantasy. It's a very "grounded" fantasy novel, I feel. When I say that, I mean it just feels like the author put a lot of thought into making the creatures seem grounded and not just-- "magical"
Sue-sih-ron, with emphasis on the second syllable, or sometimes the first. It's always interesting to learn the meaning behind someone's username. And those books sound really fascinating. I'll have to see if i can find them in a used book shop or something.
i agree with the first person, i thought it was "sus-ahh-ron" XD
but on anther note.. AAH! where can i find these books!! i would read the HELL out of them ;u; i've always loved dragons since i was a child. (i blame Spyro: the dragon)
i also had an aunt who wrote a novel about dragons and her take on them was wonderful. i always saw them as protectors of the earths life forces
Ahahahha guess it's not that weird of a pronunciation then! xD
You can find them at Amazon here-- http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Champion-One-Age-Fire/dp/0451463633/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1390712080&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=dragon+champion
But I've also seen them in libraries and book stores! Just look in the science fiction/fantasy (not YA) section :3
And ohhhh that's super cool! :D
Ahh I've been trying to remember what the series was called; glad I know now so I can read it! ovo
And I always pronounced it /soos'-ih-rone/ so I guess that's kinda close? |D
something like soo-see-ron :D (just like it's written?) I always thought your name comes from the finnish word susi! (=wolf)
Never ask a linguist how they pronounce things, we'll use IPA and then everybody but us is confused: so:'sɪɹʌn http://www.paulmeier.com/ipacharts/
IPA is great, I've seen it used (at least in a simplified form) since I started learning English as a kid. This American way looks confusing.
That's not an american usage, its standard IPA used by all academic language circles. If you saw something else, that was a rogue format. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet
That's what the link to the interactive charts are for. :P Find the ones that look like the symbols I used, click on them, and you'll get a standardized reproduction of the voice sound for that phoneme. Once you get the idea of what each sound is attached to each symbol, then you can read it and get the idea of how I pronounce it without either of us having to go to the hassel of recording, uploading, and sharing sound bites. :P
The Age of Fire is a great series, although I felt that the quality dropped for the last three books. But the first three (from the point of individual hatchlings) are great.
Su-sih-run would be the closest I can get. I guess I pronounce the middle "s" sound somewhere between an s and a z, not completely enunciated for either. I had to say your name a million times aloud though, because apparently I did that thing where you see a name often and you come up with a pronunciation for it in your head, only it turns out that you didn't come up with an actual pronunciation and instead just blurred the letters and a few sounds together in a way that made sense to you visually and somewhat audibly but not when you actually spoke it? because when I read your name it makes sense, but when I speak your name it doesn't feel right.
DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE
I've always pronounced it Su-Sih-Ron, with the middle syllable being the fastest. (The Sih sounds like the first part of Sith).
That's pretty cool! After reading the author's comment I'm thinking sue-eye-ron. I'm kinda with him on the whole thing of how to pronounce names you just made up. It's funny when I try and say my made-up names out loud when I'm talking to people about my characters. It always sounds weird saying something out loud you always keep in your head.
This is a late comment, but— I've been thinking about this ever since you popped into my stream the first time and I was struggling to decide how your username might be pronounced, but after sitting around saying it a couple hundred times (alright, maybe not that many) I've found that the most natural way for me personally is something between soos-iron (think: Dr. Suess) but it comes out more likes soos-siren. Which might just be my lazy Texas drawl, but yup! I try to say it sue-see-ron though because that seems to be the most common, and the most "literal" in terms of how it's spelled. Also, it's on the list of how you pronounce it. So yup!

I don't know if i can do this correctly, but i always 'thought' your name as sus-ahh-ron!
