HORROR MOVIES? by Squeedge

Okay, I still need to upload my back catalogue and recent artwork, but while I'm at it, thought we could discuss HORROR MOVIES with Halloween vastly approaching. I think I'm still in SOCIAL MODE after my party on Saturday.

So. Horror movies. Love 'em? Hate 'em? Any favorites, or films that traumatized you for life? Recommendations? Personally, I love them, and they've been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Although that wasn't always to my liking.

As a kid, I was kind of a wimp. I would literally jump at my own shadow, and any loud, sudden noise would send me into a panic. So from my standpoint, horror movies were torture devices out to make my life as miserable as possible. However, I was already drawn to many things that could be tied into the horror genre without realizing it (monsters and the paranormal, mostly), so it seems only natural that I'd eventually get curious and start gravitating towards them.

Unfortunately, one of the first horror flicks I ever saw was Poltergeist, which caused me to be terrified of mirrors for years. My mom tried to combat this by introducing me to the Universal monster flicks, which I ended up falling in love with, and from then on out started exploring what the genre had to offer. There was a point in my life where I'd go to Blockbuster several times a week just to scour the horror section.

As it now stands, my favorite movies under the horror umbrella are the ones that don't take themselves too seriously. And by that I mean they're fucking ridiculous. Y'know, Evil Dead 2, Re-Animator, Dead Alive, Hausu, An American Werewolf in London, and Return of the Living Dead, the entire Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Chances are, if could be listed under comedy-horror, I'll dig it.

That's not to say I don't enjoy the creepy and the classic stuff, though. Oh, and then there's a plethora of bad to FUCKING AWFUL movies that I deeply love, but that might be the longest list of all. I mean, as much as I'd love to convince you all I'm some classy horror movie connoisseur, I'm the same person that regards Troll 2 as a masterpiece.

I was also a victim of Poltergeist. When I was a kid I had a big ominous tree outside my bedroom window, just like the gnarled one in the movie, it scared the piss out of my for the longest time. But hmm what really traumatized me for life? Definitely Pet Semetary. When I was about 8-9 my parents finally broke down one night and let me rent it from our local video store. What a bad idea that was! I stayed in my parents room for a week, and even then I was still scared to sleep! I was also terrified of being alone in the house for years after that, and I haven't watched it since, haha.

As for recommendations... John Carpenter's The Thing, Children of the Corn (this is terrible, but hilarious) Hellraiser, and ohoh recently I saw the Swedish Let the Right One In and it was very good! First vampire flick I've liked in ages! Anyways, hope you have a Happy Halloween Squeedge. :>

As creepy as those trees were (and everything else in that movie) the mirror scene was the only thing that really STUCK with me. Human disfiguration of any kind was high on my phobia list. And oh god, PET SEMATARY. I actually really loved that movie as a kid, FOR SOME REASON (no I really don't know why, everyone else I know was freaked out by it), then tried to watch it as an adult and was just like "uh, what." Watch it again, I swear, you'll be giggling by the end. It does not hold up well.

The Thing, Hellraiser, and Let the Right One In are all top favorites of mine!

Huge Stephen King fan here! Mostly the books though; I'm not really a fan of the "typical" horror films, especially of the 2000's/2010's (Paranormal Activity, Saw, Shutter Island and whatnot), but I sure do love the classics. Nosferatu, Psycho, The Birds, the Alien quadrilogy, Mr Jekyll and Hyde, Dracula, Frankenstein... Yeah.

Also, King's books seem to get adapted to pretty shitty films, apparently. For instance, Dreamcatcher. The book is fucking horrid (in that it makes you feel physically sick while reading it; as a book it's damn good), but the film is apparently laughably bad and not scary/creepy at all. You might like it, hahah.

Have you seen Troll Hunter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Troll\_Hunter)? As a Norwegian I'm obviously biased, but it's really, really good. It's a mockumentary "made by" a group of film students at a university college. Basically, they start noticing strange things happening in certain areas in Norway, so they go to investigate. Turns out there are a bunch of trolls messing up things, etc. It's really cool! The creature design is absolutely excellent, too, though it's not really a horror film per se - it's classified as dark fantasy on Wikipedia - but it has a lot of creepyish parts regardless (think Blair Witch Project, just with trolls and not anti-climactic).

    • Link

I need to read more Stephen King, honestly. Although Dreamcatcher is one of the books I have read, which I picked up after seeing the movie. I was pretty shocked at the difference, ahaha. I do like the movie as a guilty pleasure, but I don't think the film did it any real justice. At least not after the first act, the first act was good IIRC.

And most modern horror movies have been shamefully awful and rely too much on shock and jump-scares. I do like the Saw series as a... "slasher revival" thing, but otherwise I have been completely and utterly disappointed with horror movies in the last ten years. There's been a few jems, though, such as REC and Let the Right One In. Otherwise, I mostly stick to 80's cheese and golden-age classics.

And aaaa, I still need to watch Troll Hunter! I've heard so many good things.

Hmm, the one when I was a child that scared me the most, even though I never saw it was The Chukey franchise. I didn't like the idea of a doll alive and evil, even in the movie stores I'd run past just that one movie to avoid looking at it.

One I've actually watched was The Feast and The Desent and the one Jason movie where he goes up into space. Those were my tween horror film years.

Recently ive only really gotten piss scared at the paranormal activity one movie because I didn't know what to expect. Besides that the recent ones haven't scared me at all, in fact only thing that's been boggling my brain was the silent hill games lol (I replayed all of them this year)

I'm not for much of the classics besides Pet Semtary, Beetlejuice, Nightmare before Christmas, and corpses bride which aren't all that scary.

    • Link

Y'know, that's not the first time I've heard someone being afraid of Chucky without actually seeing the Child's Play movies. Which makes sense, I remember Chucky being something a lot of kids in grade school would talk about to scare eachother. It was oddly unavoidable. Personally Chucky never bothered me, but the Goosebump's book and episode "Night of the Living Dummy?" JESUS. CHRIST. That terrified me more than I can adequately explain.

I LOVE THE SILENT HILL GAMES, AAA. Er. Well. The first three, and SH4 has become a love-hate relationship built upon inside jokes with my friends, hahaha.

      • Link

Oh really? Glad I'm not th only one lol

Woot, silent hill and dead space are my games~ I like 3 the most right now, creepiest so far (and excited that that one is being turned into the new movie!)

        • Link

SH3 is definitely the scariest game, in my humble opinion. The living environments and obscured vignettes really get to me in the best way possible.

And haha, I'm seeing the movie tonight. Mostly to laugh my ass off, though, as I hear it's a hilariously awful bastardization of the game. Like, worst than the first movie. I just hope I walk out giggling and not grinding my teeth.

          • Link

Lucky, I'll take my mate to go see it next week.

Meh, it's a silent hill movie (from the previews I'm hoping it isn't too horrid)

I can't wait to see how stupid that worm in the sewer and the stupid woman at the end.

  • Link

I, like Renard, fell victim to A Serbian Film. I reacted to it in pretty much the exact same way that he did.

As far as ones that I've actually enjoyed, I'd have to list Suspiria, the Phantasm series, Prince of Darkness, anything with Donald Pleasence, the early Puppet Master films (which are about the only puppet/doll-themed horror films that I can watch because reasons), and I'd have to give Insidious an honorable mention for the window and doll family scenes. Also a fan of anything yoshihiro nishimura's done FX work for (Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police, etc.), but those often cross over into Japanese Cyberpunk territory aka my favourite film-related thing.

    • Link

I feel bad that I didn't react to it that way. I don't know if I'm far too jaded or couldn't buy into the cartoonishly evil bad guy or the implausibility of the plot. I know I just walked away admiring the technical aspects but feeling pissed off at its attempts to shock me. IDK. CONTROVERSIAL OPINION but I can at least understand why it would horrify most people. I'm just really critical of exploitation films that try to be poignant, because I feel like shock is a very lazy way to get a point across.

I LOVE THE PUPPET MASTER SERIES. I just bought the first three, been meaning to give them a re-watch for laughs. And haha, I liked Insidious, but... not because I thought it was good, just fun.

Also a huge fan of basically everything Yoshihiro Nishimura's done.

      • Link

RE: A Serbian Film, I can totally see where your coming from. Most similar films have just left me aggravated, but it was the acting that really won me over with this one. But whatever, opinions, some liked it some didn't etc, etc.

RE: Puppet Master, LOVE the first three. Still enjoy most of the rest, but Retro Puppet Master was just thoroughly unenjoyable. Will not watch again. Gotta dig out my boxed set again sometime, haven't seen 'em in a few years...

And yeah, definitely see Suspiria and the Phantasm films. Death orbs are still the coolest shit in any horror film ever.

    • Link

SUSPIRIA AND PHANTASM ARE THE FUCKIN BOMBEST SHIT and nobody i know really talks about either of them, especially the latter. great, great stuff.

      • Link

WILL WE REMEDY MY... LACK OF SEEING THESE MOVIES. I feel so uncultured.

      • Link

Death orbs and killer dwarves. All that needs to be said.

  • Link

I have a love/hate relationship with horror. I love horror and have always been fascinated by things that manage to frighten or disturb me, but in my opinion most horror, at least in movies, is absolute crap. So many horror flicks are extremely lazy and rely on jump scares, gore, screeching violins and other age-old tricks to rile people up a little. It might make you jump while you're watching it, but it has no lasting effect. Maybe I'm hard to scare, but I just get so tired of it.

Even when they do have a more original scary concept the stories tend to be terrible and/or clichéd.

I have sort of given up on finding any real horror movies that can manage to traumatize me. Movies like Requiem For A Dream and 2001: A Space Odyssey are far more frightening than any horror movie I have ever watched.

However, like you I do enjoy horror movies that are so ridiculous they end up funny instead. Especially if it isn't intentional :P There's nothing funnier than ripping terrible horror movies apart.

    • Link

I don't consider horror movies that depend on cheap scares to be worthy of much recognition, and definitely aren't what horror movies are all about. It's... a broad, broad genre. I mean, some people do really like that kind of stuff and that's fine, but it's not my cup of tea unless I'm busy cackling at it. SOME DAY, I should make a huge horror recommendations list, because even if nothing out-right scares you, there's a lot of good film the genre has to offer.

The only horror movie that managed to freak me out as an adult was REC, but part of me thinks it was because I watched it on a total whim without knowing ANYTHING, alone, in the dark. So.

And yes, unintentionally funny is the best kind of funny. And this is where I tell you to watch The Howling III, because... dear god. Words cannot explain. Just take my word for it, it's... SOMETHING ELSE.

      • Link

Well! I always like to hear recommendations. I tend to go on horror movie binges now and again and it's always good to have a list to pick from, so if you ever feel like making one I'll have to check it out :> When people say they dislike jump scares I'm usually on the same page as them.

Hmm, I'm trying to think of some horror movies I thought were alright. The Orphanage and a Korean one called A Tale Of Two Sisters come to mind. There were scenes in both that were really well done, but sadly they also suffered from stories that were kind of... stupid may be a harsh word, but.. stories that kind of annoyed me.

I've had REC recommended to me before, but I've never gotten around to watch it.

As for funnies I remember House of Wax (the new one) with great fondness. I also think Hostel is super hilarious for some reason. Oh and The Mangler, but that one is definitely intentional.

Haha, The Howling III sure sounds.. interesting. I'll take your word for it, gotta watch it sometime.

(disclaimer: This is Chomper. Hoot left herself logged in on my computer ahahhhaah >:D)

FUCKIGN LOVE HORROR MOVIES. All kinds. Sci/fi-horror, comedy-horror, monster horror, god it's just such a GOOD GENRE.

Some favs/goodies are The Descent, Pandorum, The Thing, Alien (<--one of my top 5 fav movies of all time I believe), Grave Encounters, Silent Hill, Evil Dead 1 & 2, Cabin in the Woods, Jurassic Park (<-it's fucking scary dude lol), oao oawhgogo somanygoodones.

Troll 2 /is/ a masterpiece. There's a REASON we still remember it haha. I remember when I watched that for the first time it was with like 3 other friends and they all were SICK OF IT after a half hour but I wouldn't let them turn it off, and by the end I was the only one still watching lol.

    • Link

ALSO tell me about your party! Do you have any pics of the decorations n stuff?

  • Link

I have an unhealthy addiction to found footage movies. I know it's getting oversaturated and a lot of it isn't even remotely that good but I DUNNO, they just have a place in my heart haha. Grave Encounters, [REC] (1&2) and The Tunnel were totally rad IMO and I even enjoy the Paranormal Activity franchise. I dunno why haha. I guess it's just because found footage stuff makes it really easy to immerse yourself and empathize which in horror movies really makes shit freaky. Outside of found footage I really dig 28 Days/Months Later. I find the idea of the infected way more freaky than old school zombies. Also Eden Log, Pandorum and Event Horizon (to some degree, I feel like an ass saying so but it's hard for me to really get into older, by my standards at least, movies) because they're the closest thing to live action Dead Space and MAN I LOVE THOSE GAMES.

Also, MARTYRS IS REALLY FREAKING GOOD. Wouldn't really call it straight up horror but the first half is pretty spooky, the concept of the movie as a whole is interesting. HI I'M INCOHERENTLY RAMBLING.

    • Link

Ahh Event Horizon and The Tunnel were both really neat, fun to watch. I'm kind of obsessed with found footage stuff at the moment too. Have you checked out Lake Mungo?

      • Link

You recommended it I think but the plot kinda sounded like it wasn't my thing so I opted for The Tunnel instead haha.

        • Link

Yeah it's not so much in-your-face horror as it is a mystery with a paranormal twist at the end that kind of stays with you. What I like most about it though is how well-portrayed and acted the characters were. Seriously the all really felt like just REAL people. Great direction and acting. The Tunnel is definitely a good alternative though haha.

  • Link

    Here we go ;3;

I really adore the saw franchise, especially when you look past all the gore (but who would want to do that anyway hurrr). Idk, there are some neat morals in it, esp. That bad people get what they deserve even if it's through some warped justice system of HOOKS AND SAWS GALORE HGHGNGNGH.

I also really like the chucky fanchise too. Idk, they used to creep me out so much as a kid, but now that I look back on them they are really funny. Childs play....yeah that shit cray. But the newer ones are dope. And theyre making a new one next year (I think) so EHEHE.

Japanese slasher films are the best tho. Stuff you randomly find on netflix like the scissor lady or whatever. Tokyo Gore Police is an all time favorite for me though. Mmmm.

Classics are goood. Idk, I really like Blair Witch (cos its funny. TEEHEE GOT AN EAR IN A BANDANA YOOOOOO) and yeah. Plus really dumb ones like Human Centipede 1&2 plus the Serbian Film.

Then again, I dont think raping newborns counts as a...horror movie.

HARD TO GET ME TO CRINGE. COME AT ME. FIGHT ME IRL.

    POSSESSION

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possession\_%281981\_film%29

I WILL RECOMMEND IT UNTIL THE DAY I DIE

    also

tucker and dale vs evil, à l'intérieur (if you've got a big stomach), drag me to hell, the thing (carpenter version, obv)

i will follow up on why i like these things in a minute

    • Link

tucker and dale vs evil is a comedy and normally it takes a lot to get me to like a comedy, but it's fantastic. it's an obvious answer to movies like The Hills Have Eyes and Deliverance, where the sketchy 'hillbillies' are the good guys and the van full of dumbass college kids are not, the less you know about this before watching, the better. great narrative undercurrent about classism, too, actually

à l'intérieur is just fucked up. i first saw it when circulating was visiting us, it's about a woman stalking a recently widowed pregnant woman because she wants her baby. another one where the less you know, the better. it's really unrelenting and i don't recommend it if you get upset easily - not just in terms of violence but in terms of distressing thematic stuff.

drag me to hell is the sam raimi movie everyone was waiting for after after all that spiderman biz, i feel like convincing someone to see this is easier if i just show this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L\_NfCmTkLPQ

you've probably already seen the thing

      • Link

        also: gozu

        another one of my favorites

  • Link

I always had a love-hate with horror movies! In school as a kid they made us watch the old black and white Psycho, and it scared me so much I was always careful going upstairs in case someone jumped out and pushed me back down!! When actually watching though I couldn't look away! I think I'll always prefer horror games and comics and books, but movies are so loveable.

  • Link

american werewolf in london? oh man thats like my favorite werewolf movie i actually rewatched it again yesterday!

another good werewolf movie thats also pretty goofy is 'the howling'. the whole time i watched it i couldnt figure out if it was supposed to be funny or not until the ending.

and black sheep which is like, weird and kinda dumb but the monster sheep makes it worth it

    http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr\_ljoil1CHmf1qd2fzuo1\_1280.jpg

if you keep in mind the whole time that its not supposed to be serious it makes it pretty fun.

those are the only 2 movies i can think of right now though. i just went through netflix and found 3 movies that look like fun that i might check out so ill have to get back to you on that later

  • Link

I haven't really seen many horror movies recently, I get enough scare from the creepy criminal minds episodes haha

But the first thing that always comes to mind for me is The Silence of the Lambs! I watched it when I was young and I wasn't really that uncomfortable opposed to when I watched the Twilight Zone; boy that show scared me for some reason!

  • Link

I'm not a huge fan of horror movies in general bc I will literally flip the fuck out at a jump scare, but if you give me a good old fashoned psychological horror or a body horror fest something along those lines then mmmm yup I can work with that B)

tho I'm not exactly a ~connoisseur~ but I chalk that up to the fact that there havent been a ton of good horror movies out in recent years that I can recall off the top of my head, plus I dont exactly have time to go and see movies a lot of the time

  • Link

    I love horror movies.

I put together a list of 100 horror movies to watch throughout October, most of which being movies I hadn't seen previously.

I've been in bliss all month.

  • Link

I love horror movies... all kinds... cheesy slasher gorefests, zombie stuff, serious and well-done thrillers and everything in between.

I do remember that Child's Play kind of spooked me as a kid, mostly because of large cardboard standees with glowing eyes in our video store, but I've always had a fascination with horror and especially anything with cool monster or practical effects.

  • Link

When i was 10 I saw Tremors and became obsessed with it. I am I diehard cult tremors fan down to being probably the only person in the world to have obsessively watched the short lived tv series when it was around.

So yeah, there's that. I think I also made a Counterstrike map based on the town of Perfection where you could only go rooftop to rooftop because touiching the ground would eventually kill you LIKE THAT COOL PART OF THE BMOVIE WHERE THE GRABOIDS HAD EVERYONE TRAPPED ON SURFACES ABOVE GROUND. sgljsdg

Realizing that im attracted to worm/snake/tentacle related things. f UCK

  • Link

Tonight I'm putting on The Omen since I don't remember anything about it from when I first saw it. Oh and apparently I'm watching Alvin and the Chipmunks: Trick or Treason.

Also, while I notice you talking about scary games and such, the most scared I've ever been from a videogame was Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland. A kids game from the 90s. There's a section where you crawl through a tight tunnel maze in some old Egyptian tombs, and this mummy is crawling after you. Considering I was like 6 or 7 when I played it, I wasn't as adept at videogames as I could have been, and kept getting too scared to progress. here's a timestamped video if you're interested.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player\_detailpage&v=dkCLbS3WiZ8\#t=363s

Seriously when I first saw that mummy chasing me I fuck
