Weasyl Don't Comment? by wolfkidd

I've noticed that images posted on Weasyl don't seem to get a lot of comments, and I'm wondering, is that a function of Weasly just having a smaller user-base as yet? Is it inconvenient to comment on stuff in some fashion? Or is just that the site is more of a "oooh, look at the purty pichers!" kind of place? Or maybe it's a combo of all or some of the above?

I do have to admit that the layout and design do seem to have a sort of "gallery" feel to them, where looking at the art is the primary focus and comments and other forms of communication are sort of secondary - in fact some of the other functions for controlling things are downright obscure (trying to put up a streaming notice is a 5 minute hunt every time).
-edit- Heck, I only just noticed that it looks like you can't reply to comments: the "buttons" to reply and link to a comment are hidden until you mouse-over the comment itself.

Mostly just the small user base, plus the fact that people were generally better networked on FA, it's been kind of a bitch to refind people on here.

I'd like to think that it's like Nerts mentioned and we just have to bring more people over. I can see what you're saying though: The site does put the pictures front and center. Granted, I guess that's the point, but it can be overwhelming all the same.

I think it's also the case of having a smaller user-base, that's to be expected at first.

It is a bit smaller and people are still re-forming connections. I think I have your Weasyl from using the watchlist app forever ago, I don't recall seeing a journal from you about it.

It also depends on how aggressively people marketed the transfer to Weasyl. Some people got their whole follower base to follow them by making sure everyone who followed them elsewhere knew about their Weasyl presence, like mitsukijuran.

I don't think you've actually made a journal at FA advertising your Weasyl presence, yet; you may want to do so, some people may not even know you have one!

I did actually post at one point that I had an account here (during the Great FA Downtime). Admittedly I'm not moving to Weasyl, I'm more utilizing both systems (plus Inkbunny and SoFurry), or at least trying to use them more. I wish I was smart enough to program a tool that would cross-post new images to all four (or better yet, allow you to select which sites to cross-post to.)

There actually is a plugin called Waxpost that will let you take art from other sites and quickly cross-post it here.

        https://www.weasyl.com/journal/24548/fa-exodus-database-support-artists-petition-other-resources

This has a bunch of links for various resources that make it easy to crosspost art here from any of the other majors. I know Inkbunny has one too, but I don't think the other two do.

I didn't know you actually had an IB at all. You may want to post a "where to find me" journal at all four, as cliched as it may be be, just so people know!

Inkbunny has a tool that lets you crosspost TO it, I mean.

I completely agree with you; I wrote a thread about this in the forums about the very topic. I think the user experience here would be improved by strengthening the social networking features.

My suggestions were a "Like" button for comments, a "send note" option next to the username essentially wherever it occurs, inline comment boxes, redesigned thumbnails (which many people have complained about), making user shouts more prominent on profile pages and implementing groups ASAP.

Of course, more than the site's features, the lack of comments is also because of the smaller and less cohesive userbase. I think if you copied FA's profile network structure over to Weasyl there would be almost as many views and comments. I also believe the fact images are uploaded both places is another cause.

Add to list: when replying it would be nice to display the comment you're replying to above the reply box. More than a few comments and you stop being able to see what you're responding to, making it difficult to formulate a cohesive, coherent reply to a longer comment.

I think the biggest issue here, Wolf is that you havent brought over your base that would normally Comment. I originally had this same issue until I started advertising my weasyl and telling people that HEY, look! This is where my art is going to be at so please come over and enjoy it. This was my original complaint a while ago and now that's changed. Despite Weasyl's userbase being smaller, its actually gotten pretty much gotten 5 times bigger since the whole FA thing started. If you are gonna be using weasyl like a back up page , then its probably gonna be treated as much and you wont get the comments. That's the way I see.

As for some of the UI problems , yeah , there are some issues that could be streamlined. Like replying to comments. You could have the reply window appear under the comment you are replying to instead of going all the way to the bottom. Can always Suggest things to them on the forum because apparently they are listening. which is a nice change of pace

I've noticed so far the userbase is a bit quieter. Probably has to do with the smaller population as others have noted. It does help cut down on the particularly creepy comments at least.

I think it's a combination of things. Content flooding, including lots of re-uploads, a smaller user base, and the fact that content may be getting put up on two sites now instead of one.

Can you blame people if they are getting a little overwhelmed about where to comment/fave/watch? Do you expect people to copy/paste the same comment on both sites? I mean, I'm not disagreeing with you that it's an issue. But these are growing pains, during a mass exodus. It may help to let the dust settle a little and let people figure out how they want to handle this new site. Give it a month or two.

Daigo has a good point about how you declare you are going to be using the page and how people change their expectations about that.

Thanks, BTW for taking the time and effort to make your migration over here. It does mean a lot to some of us. I don't think FA's all that bad, but I do have a lot of hope for this site.

Could also be that some people haven't changed their settings so they can see Explicit content.

  • Link

Yeah it seems to be the case for several artists from what I have heard.
Myself included, tho i don't many comments to begin with lol

  • Link

I'd blame it on the small userbase and people still making connections from the FA/Weasyl "migration".

  • Link

In my case, it's definitely not too difficult to post, in fact it's much easier for me to post. I like the layout better my self. Though in the future I think they should expand our submissions inbox's a little more. ~ people who follow quite a few artists may miss stuff.

The comment section here is kinda weird and unintuitive. Also a lot of times I don't bother faving/commenting on something I already saw on FA. I still go through FA first, then this place since most people are in both places.

  • Link

That's interestin'! I've been making it my goal to leave a comment of SOME kind for every favorite I do.. I'd hoped others would, too! Thought it did take me a moment to figure out this comment box.. heeee...

    Also?
    Charlie don't surf p.o
I swear I hear that every time I see this entry title.
I MIGHT POSSIBLY HAVE SOME KIND OF TOURETTES LITE™, I"M NOT SURE ABOUT THAT.
Anyway, upon further review, I gotta say I'm addicted to the way wazzle handles it's text. I like the markup, I love how I get an instant preview. Sure these things might be copied later on, but I'll still probably enjoy the wozzle more.
The only thing I dislike about Weasyl, is the fact that it's awkward to hammer out on my keyboard as I have miniature vixen seizures cuteness, every so often.

    • Link

I was thinking more along the lines of "Machete don't text." but that works too!

  • Link

I suspect it has something to do with the massive influx of artists and art - particularly when new artists upload their entire previous gallery. When there's a hundred or more submissions in your inbox in less than a day, one tends to just nuke them sight-unseen. Oddly, I think it's the popularity that's killing the comments!

    • Link

      That does make sense.

  • Link

Maybe this site is just trying to branch out little by little instead of going real fast.

It is the latest function that if we play the scrabble word finder words game trhen i have seen this the high rate game that we can play very easily.
