Quite a lot more people here! by RickGriffin

I think I like Weasyl a lot, though I do have a few issues with the interface:

1) I haven't been able to clear out my submissions inbox because it's currently sitting at over 1000. I could easily do this for FA but not for Weasyl, why not? Well, because Weasyl requires square thumbnails, and since they all look same-ish, it requires a lot more assessing of whether I'll check out the full version of a picture because I can't always derive the context from a bust shot. Not to mention, hovering my cursor over an image obscures it, so I need to basically dance around the images I'm looking at and can't use my cursor to help me not skip lines . . .

2) This wouldn't be insurmountable but there are a TON of thumbnails on each page. Checking the select box on each individually is right out, so I need to assess and clear them all at once; I do this by middle-clicking to open the art I want to view in a new tab. This usually gives me 20-35 tabs open at once, wheras with FA I only has 10-15 open per page.

(One of the reasons I currently hate deviantart is because their ridiculous overblown wrap-coding-in-wrap-coding prevents middle clicks from registering as middle clicks. It only takes an extra click to open a new tab from the drop-down menu, but once you have a habit . . .)

3) I really don't like programmer logic leaking into user interface. Programmer logic prefers to use the least number of computer logic steps in order to get a result. UI logic needs preferably uses the least number of human logic steps to get to a result. They don't always correlate. Something like "Invert selection" is okay for utility's sake, but people don't generally think of selecting all as inverting the selection of none. They'll get used to it, sure, but to ease people into the system it makes more sense to have "select all" and "select none" buttons as well, even though that's "technically" redundant clutter.

Additionally, what is WITH the text markup? It's not HTML or BBC or a mimic of DA or FA, and since there is no clear "markup help" box in the sidebar when you're actually making text, you have to open it up basically from a google search, or from the "help" bar at the top and then click markdown formatting.

I do not like using asterisks for auto-emphasized text. They're used far too much in RP contexts, mainly because they're used as quotation markers for actions; it doesn't look the same when it's in italics. You have to add *backslashes* now to do that, and I'm pretty sure everyone's forgotten where the backslash is located on their keyboard. Why not just use Wiki formatting with two single quotes in a row to mark italics, and three to mark bold?

Also any markup that begins with ![] is too much. That's three symbols to type PLUS the brackets that go around the user name, and they're super special cases whether you want a name, an icon, or a name and an icon. I'm sure it looks like it makes sense to a programmer, but why have so many additional marks there?

If you don't want to use the colon markup from DA, how about [user:rickgriffin] or [icon:rickgriffin]. Or if you want a name and the icon, [usericon:rickgriffin]. And you only have to type my name once. It looks like more symbols to a programmer, but typing words for users is more natural than symbol-hunting.

This also creates the problem that several common symbols have to be represented in HTML anyway, so . . . yeah, it ends up turning into a bit of a mish mash. Also since text formatting mimics HTML anyway, there's no auto-injection that allows for multiple line breaks between paragraphs . . .

Okay that turned into a bit of a rant. I really do like Weasyl, I just wish browsing it didn't make me feel like I'm in looking into it through a hole cut in a box . . .

Quite a lot more people here!

Nice to see you here. : )

Agreed on most points. The thumbnail issue is somewhat remediated with the HoverZoom plugin for Chrome (shows full previews when you mouseover thumbnails), but sadly the Firefox equivalent (Thumbnail Zoom Plus doesn't support Weasyl yet. I've contacted the addon developer to try to fix that. In the meantime, the forums seem fairly active and the devs are receptive to suggestions.

I'm afraid we're probably stuck with the hinky markup scheme, though, since they've already done one mass reformat and I doubt they're keen to risk breaking stuff again. There should definitely be a link for markup help somewhere clearly visible on every page, at least. Anyway, glad you've made the move, and hopefully this critical mass of members will drive some improvement in a site that's already off to a good start :]

I'm prone to be anxious when it comes to this sort of stuff, sort of like "We're having company over? CLEAN UP EVERYTHING NOW, WHY WASN'T THIS ALREADY CLEAN, THE BATHROOM IS HALFWAY THROUGH REMODELING EVERYONE IS GOING TO HATE US" sort of panic.

      • Link

ahaha yeah, our house would never be cleaned if we didn't have company over. even then, we typically put everything off until an hour before they arrive, when we suddenly notice the clock and scream "SUMMON THE CHORENADO"

I'm sure if you posted your concerns, or tweeted this to @weasyldev (if you have a twitter) they'd look into it!

Weasyl is STILL in Beta so suggestions are encouraged.

But I do agree on many points you brought up.

I am friends with one of the directors (he hosts Housepets for me), I just feel awkward bringing it up with him cause I feel like the only time I get to talk to him is when I have a problem.

      • Link

Actually, we love to hear from users -- whether it be on the forum, on Twitter, or in an email.

        Addressing these in order:
        1) The thumbnails - we know about this one. There are some site changes in the pipeline which will address this issue.
        2) We may be able to make the number of notifications per page configurable; would that be of interest to you?
        3) Agreed. This should also be possible, but I'd personally like to keep the Invert Selection button too as I sometimes select one or two items I want to keep, in my notifications then invert the selection.

Your points on markup were well-received - unfortunately this isn't an area of the code I feel confident in modifying. I can say that it has been raised before, and we're looking into it.

And we definitely need to get a "help on using Markdown" link in the text edit boxes. I've actually got that on my to-do list now :)

        Thanks for the feedback! :)

Being able to adjust the number of images per page would help a lot; right now just the number of rows I need to visually sift through is overwhelming and the title obscuring the image when I mouseover doesn't help.

Also something that came to mind about thumbnails, considering a lot of us are at least halfway competent artists, I think we fall for the same issues when we're forced to crop to a small square. Since a picture's visual balance depends a lot on the dimensions we chose for the final piece, when cropping we need to reassess that to highlight the most "weighted" detail that'll be clear in a small box--which ends up usually being the face, since we're primarily character artists. Which usually means that 80% of the thumbnails, if not auto-generated, are of faces without context . . .

          Thanks for responding!

Ahh...! I'm glad you got some conversations going! :)

      • Link

Awww that's okay! I always like hearing from you. :) It looks like SuburbanFox beat me to the response, but glad you two are talking through things!

And it's totally okay to bring anything up to me whenever.

        • Link

You're really too nice, you know that!

  • Link

Yeah. It's at least better than FA, but that's setting the bar really low. The alert system needs a lot of work. Plus I can only view two lines of favorites. It does feel like looking through a hole in a box I guess.

I will admit - it's certainly cool how you can link directly to deviantART accounts on here. (Which I have done for my commission that I reposted - I figure you would have wanted to redirect people to your dA anyways. ^^; ) but a few weeks ago, when I posted something like [icon][/icon], it brought a little message in the submission comments bit that would direct you to the markup.

    ...however I haven't seen it since then. >..<;

About the formatting, it's called "Markdown." There's a section under help topics. Though I agree, it would be nice to have it already displayed when submitting at least. It's so weird and different, I haven't memorized it yet! Plus, I like using astericks so that makes me sad.

I don't know enough about #3 to have an opinion on it. XD But I don't mind the thumbnails so much.

I do agree with #1 though. And adding onto it, I wish we could view submissions by oldest to newest instead of just newest to oldest. That's my only real complaint about the site.

That said, the options to have folders (and even sub folders) as well as blocking by tags makes the rest of it worth it. XD

As much as I like a fair bit of the interface, I pretty much agree with everything here (especially the icon thing). That said, plenty of good to outweigh the bad so far, so I can live with it for the time being.

I'm not too fond of the thumbnail system either. I don't think it should be a necessity to have to do. I mean, I do have fun sometimes trying to figure out where to crop, but that's besides the point. The point is that it really does hinder me from looking at a majority of art on the site because the pic doesn't look interesting, or i can't tell what it's going to be, and I'd like to know exactly who the artist is without hovering over the pic, etc..
