FA vs Weasyl by OrcaOwl

I'm curious how many people use Weasyl more than FA at this point? I know a lot of people are leaving FA to some degree in favor of Weasyl because of the recent events, but I don't have any idea as to how many or anything like that.

It's hard for me to nest here as my following is much less here than at FA so it feels a bit lonely uploading 10+ pictures with no feedback at all, but I'd like to continue trying! I really like how this site is set up and hope maybe at some point it'll be more active and friendly like how FA has been to me.

Anyway, any comments would be awesome !

I just joined Weasyl today and hope to be more active than I've been online lately o3o

    • Link

Aw that's cool though, I joined quite a few months ago but haven't been too active. I want to try to be more active with more people being on the site!

Coolio. So far I really like this site, the layout and all the gadgets are really cool so I'll probably stay .w.

        • Link

I think I'll stay as well for the same reason :)

Originally, I cam here to check out Weasyl, because I wanted to try it out back in Alpha Phase.

So far, I'm enjoying it, a lot is still left in need of explaining, but over all I like the site, it visually appealing, and the maturity filters are way better, and for the Most part, the drama is super easy to avoid. The only thing I don't like, but is no really big deal, is the option of premium accounts and the special benefits. Even though I hate the idea, I encourage it if it means the site will be maintained which FA clearly has issues with.

All the little options they have are awesome too. Visible Commissions info, No more need for Art pieces or Journals needed for Streaming. All the benefits just out way the cons.

Yeah it's set up really nicely, I really do enjoy the interface and just how many options there are for everything. I wish that the user base was a lot bigger though and that people talked more to each other, like commented on work and stuff.

      • Link

You can blame the onslaught of people uploading their entire galleries on here for that one. Everyone that I've talked to though has been super nice, and actually look at a nobody artist like me XD So it makes me feel good.
The question now is, what do you think of it?

        • Link

          Think of weasyl itself?

And yeah nice people are always good haha. And yeah maybe I should try commenting on other people's stuff or something I have no idea.

          • Link

Well, no matter what feel free to Message me any time! I really enjoy the company of others ^_^

            • Link

Okay sounds great! :) thank you for the offer

I like the layout, but like you my following is on FA and it feels lonely here for sure. I'm also hesitant to upload the same things here that I do on FA because as it is I upload quite a few sketches over there but I tend to scrap them after they've sat for people to see for a few days. Here there isn't a scraps gallery and I don't want random unfinished work sitting all over my regular gallery! :C

    • Link

Yeah I understand that :( I guess it's possible to just upload them in batches or something? I'm really not sure. Weasyl is still in beta mode, so it's possible that something like scraps could be implemented in the future!

I've had my account long before everyone started leaving FA, and I will not be leaving FA at all. Personally, I do not prefer Weasyl, not even a little bit, but I do enjoy the site.

    • Link

Yeah I get what you mean. I think I feel about it now I did about FA at first. I joined FA a few years ago because a few friends of mine left dA in favor of FA so I just joined to see their works, but over the years I ended up preferring FA. I'm not sure if that'll happen with Weasyl, but I definitely hope that Weasyl becomes more of a valid "main" site for people like me who tend to do a lot of commissions and such.

Yeah I've seen this journal, but thanks for linking to it anyway! I'm not sure if it's too helpful for the way I tend to work, though, because I dislike uploading lower-quality work anywhere as I would hate for someone who doesn't have a weasyl to not see the higher quality art :( I tend to upload everything at the same time everywhere too lol. I think maybe just being more active here would help though haha.

      • Link

Well you could always just make sure the link to the Weasyl version is in the description, that's actually how I can to be here. I followed a link in a description (same quality and all that) and found this place and made an account. X3 it does work wonders your curiosity gets to you!

        • Link

Aw yeah that actually is a great idea!! I've seen that used on deviantart a lot, where people link to all of their other sites in the bottom of the description ahh I didn't even think of that. I wonder if there is a way to do hyperlinks in FA's descriptions... Thank you for the tip! I'll try to use it if I can figure out how to do hyperlinks.

Personally I do rather enjoy Weasyl. I like the layout and general feel. However, I upload here less often than on other sites because I use large canvases. This is perfectly fine for most places (Like DA) but I have to create a separate file for Weasyl because of the more strict file size limitations.
Sometimes it almost isn't worth uploading because you lose a lot of the detail in the smaller version and I feel that forcing us to pay to upload a full version takes away from the purpose of sharing our art to begin with.

    • Link

I can relate to that for sure, I have to upload a smaller size image whenever I upload art to the first site I posted on -- TLKFAA -- and that's always a hassle for me as well. I haven't had any issues uploading here just yet, as I tend to resize stuff down to 72 dpi before I put it up anyway (I save the 300/600 dpi pictures for prints or commissioners) but I can see how that may be a problem in the future hmmm

I wanted to check out Weasyl in light of recent events. The interface is nice and the feature suite is pretty good. While I still think FA is a bit more community oriented, the code is very dated and the wrinkles show. Which is ironic since the current drama stems from an attempt at a site refresh. I'm hoping Weasyl will be much calmer and more art focused than FA.

    • Link

Yeah I hope so too! Weasyl is still really new -- I'll be excited to see if it grows and a stronger community forms around it over the next few years.

  • Link

I've got both. And a dA account. I honestly like weasyl better than both fa and dA, I just haven't been using it as much because people haven't been moving. And I am not remotely influential enough to get people to move here with me. But if enough people move from fa over here I'll likely start using weasyl near-exclusively.

    • Link

I feel like I would use Weasyl more if more people were active here for sure too.

  • Link

I've been on Weasyl since July? (Im not sure) but so far, I really like it, to some degree more than FA because it has an updated user interface and it's just nicer in general.

    • Link

Yeah I like the updated interface as well!

  • Link

I've been on Weasyl for some months now and am rather enjoying the site.

(I didn't move here from FA, because I never used FA for reasons unrelated to the ones that everyone is talking about right now...)

    • Link

That's nice to hear that you've been enjoying weasyl, I'm happy that so many people do seem to like it. It makes me more inclined to want to stay and post things here.

  • Link

I don't really use ANY of them as much as I used to. I guess other things have kind of distracted me at this point. Honestly, I mostly use the internet for socializing with friends who live too far away for me to see them (and making new ones on occasion).

    • Link

Yeah I like the idea of using the internet to talk to friends and all, I do spend a ton of time on sites like FA/DA/tumblr just browsing art though. Not so much here since pretty much everyone I know uses other sites more than here nowadays, but maybe it'll change!

      • Link

Would you believe I didn't even realize I was responding to a year-old journal when I left this comment? Hahahah.

Yeah, I can understand that. Oddly I am WAY behind on my art inboxes on all of those sites.
