Do you prefer fast turn around or does it matter? by Caticus

Let's face it. Art is art... not a factory-made product.

Some artists are fast; some artists are slow.

Some artists like to do art in one sitting; some artists like to leave their piece and come back to it several times.

Some can draw without inspiration; some can't.

Some just want the money and give their customers what they want; some need the money and still spend every moment making the art suit their own standards and preferences even if it takes a while.

The list goes on.

I have nothing wrong with customers expecting a fast turn around as it is hard-earned (in some cases) money that you could spend on something else...

but my question is...

Do you want art or just a picture?

Do you want thoughtfulness and emotion behind your piece or do you just want it?

...

I just sincerely want to know.

I may not reply to all of the comments, but I will read them and study them.

I want to see what my viewers and possible customers have to say about this subject. I really look forward to hearing your views.

Keep in mind, everyone's views will differ and some will be alike. Please, if someone says something on here that offends you or you may think that it offends me, please say nothing of it. I mean, you can privately message them, but I want this to be a relaxed atmosphere where I can hear the opinions on this subject, and perhaps people can come here to see what the vast majority think.

Obviously, if nineteen people out of twenty say "A", and one person says "B", that does not mean that "A" is the correct answer.

Thanks for reading and your responses in advance!

when i ask for art, i'm usually willing to wait a long time for it because i understand taking a long time for it. artists who have queues and are swamped with commissions usually try to pus through their lists at a more timely rate, but, honestly i'd prefer quality over quantity.

usually the thing that has me take the longest for any art piece is trying to 'get everything right' instead of just 'pulling emotion into it'. then i stand back and look at the art that has little or no inspiration in it and compare it with a 20 minute doodle and the latter looks fantastic in comparison - _- mysterious stuff...

there's "commission"-holics out there, in my belief. People who buy art, look at it once, and file it away.

This may be a tad off-topic, but I've become more cynical about commissioners. Some could care less about the actual craft, and often about the actual content itself: sex. It's not always the case, but there often is a lot of peer pressure in other communities to make it so.

Hopefully this art site will allow for more freedom of doing art than being pressured to make pictures of what's popular. There are truly some spectacular artists (who also do stunning commissions).

In another note, there are some artists whose subject matter themselves only illustrate their desires. They don't want to use or learn new techniques in the process for self improvement, or it bears no meaning beyond the surface level, therefore it is just a picture. Art to me is telling a story between the artist and the viewer with a clear intention from the artist trying to communicate that said idea or statement. The more advanced the idea, and the more successfully it is read or executed, the better I think that piece of art becomes, especially if it makes you feel and transcends the way you think.

I much prefer awesome art than a fast turn around time. I don't think there's one 'right' way to do it, other than to be upfront about potential turn around times so that people who want a 'picture in a day' can pass you by.

Personally, I have tried to be fast and do everything in one turn, but my quality always go down if I'm rushing myself. I end up taking time and several sessions to complete a piece of work, sometimes fast or slow depending on the complexity of the piece.

I'm willing to wait awhile (with some updates just to make sure everything is okay) for an amazing piece. I want to put my heart and everything I have available for people when they commission me. Art is something you continually look at and enjoy even when the picture is finished, I would much prefer that then anything else.

If I have a date in mind as to when I wish for it to be done I tell the artist and am more than willing to pay more if need be to get it done by then. Otherwise I don't mind waiting, but, I don't mind waiting months on end for something I paid for up-front otherwise you can take as long as you want just don't get upset if I decide not to want the art anymore or decide to change the subject if I stated what I wanted before.
