(2013)What you should and should not by whitefeather

include In or on your profile.

Some people put too much information, some don't put enough. Many people put irrelivant information or information that really is best kept between family and close friends, not every single potential asshole/nutjob that visits your profile. And sometimes, you put information on there that makes you look childish, stuff that makes you look desperate for attention or to be "that special snowflake you always knew you were".

SO below I am goign to throw a few general guidlines for what is and is not generally acceptable. Why? What does it matter? Well, mostly because I can, but perhaps someone out there will see this and it'll help them out.

Like all things, profiles and the information you include are subjective and up to you. However I am basing "what's acceptable" to post on one on a few things: Would it be okay to show teachers/friends in school? How about your parents/grandma/family at home? What about your future bosses and co-workers? If the answer to any of these is embarrassment, or simply "no" then wala! It's probably shouldn't be on a profile for every joe, bob and jane to see. Some information is best left private for a reason.

So what are some good things to include?

Name or alias! They have to call you something right? Never your full real name. This is setting you up for disaster! You don't want people finding your personal facebook! There are tons of assholes out there, don't let yourself be a victim to one.

Age: generally pretty irrelevant and I find is better left off in most cases. On a site like Deviant art it's okay, but I wouldn't advise including it as a general rule. Most people past the age of like 24 don't haha. Mostly cause we get sad faced we're getting old ;_;.

Gender: This is one that, honestly, isn't needed either. It's nice to include; but the average person (like myself) has a hard time with all of the "extra" gender's floating around. For me; just put male, female, or other. If you prefer something specific, like "they" pronouns. ((A concept I am honestly still trying to understand I really am)). Just put that. Especially if it really bother's you to be call he or she. Don't say you're "mtf/ftm". Just tell me your a chic or a dude if that's what you prefer! It's like a math equation where you have more information than you need! Just kinda complicates things. Plus, you know how people can be. The average site for Role play, art, etc no one NEEDS to know that anyways.

Where you live: A general area is totally okay! No more than that though! ((Again, should be left to close pals unless your swapping addresses for commissions/shipping))

Some personality traits: I always enjoy seeing what people say about them selves! I myself know I am stubbonr and opinionated (nahhhh) and I feel visitors should know that!

Some likes/dislikes: For dislikes I've learned most people post the same cliche' stuff. "Dislikes bullies and mean people and stuff", so I tried to really recall somewhat funnier and more interesting things. ((Still a work in progress lol)). However: including some likes is always epic! It's fun to learn of some things your new potential favorite artist likes! Sometimes helps in making fanart to!

Relationship status: It always nice to include this, mostly so the average fan of yours or someone who get's suddenly attached to how cool you really are realizes your off limits. Generally though, it's not required either. Most peeps in a relationship are pretty proud of it though, so I don't blame you guys!

Sexual orientation: Unless you plan on dating someone you meet on the site, why would you include this? Do people visiting your page for art and role play REALLY need to know you like boobs versus penis or the other way around? Nope.

Personal/religious beleifs: always interesting to include and completely up to you. They can help curious fans and visitors(like myself) learn more about you. However be warned this opens you up to debates and people who just love to "stir the pot" and start up drama.

Weight/hieght etc: Not stuff that random strangers need to know really, but again your choice. I cannot personally care, since I tend to enjoy people for their personality. This type of information I COMPLETELY ignore. Just don't need to know your weight when I am here for your wonderful art.

Now we REALLY get to the parts that I see that are NOT needed yet so many people plastered them onto their profiles:
Mental or physical disorders. Things like depression, anxiety, Bipolar; guys, not one of these people on the internet need to know this shit unless they are dating you, or are incredibly close to you. Only a slight handful a people know my own issues and even then I keep them to myself. Please remember these are not badges or trophies to be proud of... I'm not saying be ashamed, since that's not something you need to do either. But plastering this stuff all over your social media sites? Really though? It's not wise to do, still up to you; but not a wise thing to do and does in the end make you look like you enjoy the attention they bring you.

Sexual fetishes: unless your on a site FOR these things, again, not something everyone should know about.

Please bare in mind this isn't aimed at anyone in particular. I've been seeing this for YEAAARS now. On AND OFF the internet, so before you get offended because you've done any of the above that I personally don't agree with remember I am a random artist and my opinion does not ACTUALLY effect you, your page, or require you change. I will not respond to attempts to argue etc. Just not interested!

I think a lot of this stuff is on my furry art profiles because that's just the environment for it. SoFurry has a great system of "adult profile information" for that kind of thing. Mostly I just link to my flist account that has that info. But my identity here is completely disconnect from my one in real life.

Well yeah, places like that are different. People roleplay adult shit there, so it's fitting, but some place like deviant art with has a 0 adult policy for pretty much everything, that stuff doesn't need to be there you know? Your audience is children lol, they don't need some of that stuff.

Oh. Heck no of course not. But on furry art sites it's REALLY common.
