Weasyl Downtime Comparison by Nemo

Weasyl underwent some scheduled downtime yesterday, so I got to see the difference between how Furaffinity and Weasyl handle their site downtime while both were still fresh in memory.

Now, I'm not saying that these downtimes are equivalent. A planned, six hour downtime during off hours is leagues away from a week-long complication of a complication of a complication, culminating in a complete site restoration from backup. But I do appreciate that Weasyl keeps meticulously detailed, updated records of their downtime instead of "I dunno, LOL." I'm not even 100% sure what every single graph is supposed to mean or represent, but it fills me with confidence that something is definitely going up and down and it is being closely tracked by someone who thinks tracking these things is important. The confidence to say "yeah this is what's going on, it happened at this time, these are the records for that" is a load off my mind.

I dunno, I thought it was cool.

They also gave hourly updates on Twitter through the whole thing, explained why they were doing it and what would improve...pluses all around.

Somehow it feels like that maintenance was made just to rub it in, but it might be just my impression

we actually started planning this migration around september, according to my irc logs and the timestamps on the control files for the email software.

The timing was just incredible though.

regardless of it being intentional or not, it was a pleasant surprise to see a site status update when the site was down.

Yeah they did handle it much better than FA did. I was pretty relieved to see that Weasyl was back up so quickly... I'm starting to really like this site.
