Yooo! So hi everyone. I'm really happy to see that so many people are using Weasyl lately. In the last week, daily submission rates have been incredibly close to that of Weasyl's biggest competitor, and I've found it very inspiring how much people are throwing themselves behind the site. That being said, I've noticed there are a lot people that predict that when Weasyl's largest competitor comes back online, that activity will slow here. However, I know from what I've seen that this isn't necessarily what people want, knowing the shortcomings of said competitor.
The truth is, things don't have to be that way. As a community, I feel it's very important for us to recognize the power we all hold as individuals, and realize that it is possible to make a change. Weasyl's largest competitor may be free, but so is every other art site. Make sure to consider the people who put time and effort into Weasyl, and think about whether you'd rather reward that, or a website that hasn't made significant progress in the last 8 years its existed.
Now of course, the biggest obstacle is "I stay there because my client base is there!" I understand this entirely, and think it would be foolish to leave the central hub just like that. Instead, one should use the resources of said hub to help facilitate change. Some of the ways to do this:
1) Post previews or low-res versions to the competitor, and link to the full-res image here to give people an incentive to come over.
2) Get the word out that commissioners are very much welcomed to join Weasyl and to upload works that were made for them.
3) Spread the word about all the fantastic features Weasyl has, such as:
-Folders for submissions
-Tag filtering
-Friends-only settings on submissions and journals
-Being able to set what kinds of notifications you get from individual followed users
-A thumbnail cropping tool
-A proper streaming system
-And a site layout that scales perfectly for mobile browsing
And in general, just make it clear that every individual can make a difference. And then, once everyone's comfortably on here, weeks or months from now, and most of Weasyl's kinks have been worked out, -then- users can begin truly migrating. To be truthful, going cold turkey never works-- It has to be a process.
I know some people are very jaded about this topic, and yes, Weasyl isn't perfect yet. But right now, it has the best shot anything has ever had at becoming the dominant force in the art community, and in that same vein, it's the best candidate out there. The coders are working their asses off to fix things (I see contact info finally went live tonight!), and as such, I foresee a lot of bright things in the site's future. It might not quite be there yet, but I have no reason to doubt the coders will stop working to make the site as robust as possible; and to me, that's the kind of dedication that deserves to be rewarded with a strong userbase, be they artist, art appreciator, or both.
Yes, absolutely! People giving feedback should be very much encouraged. I know one could argue that we've become slaves to the gratification of a like or a favorite, but hell, we're human, and it's in our nature to want recognition for the things we do.
Something simple like the ability to "like" a comment would help artists encourage their fans to leave feedback!
An outstanding answer to this, in case anyone here hasn't seen it! https://www.weasyl.com/journal/19885/don-t-wait-for-an-audience
I agree with that journal. However, for a lot of us feedback and criticism helps a lot of us grow. And like Ben said, we are all human. Something similar to a like button(maybe a helpful button?) will make commenters feel like they are contributing something positive to the community. Like I said, attention shouldn't be the primary motivation for our work, but it will sure create a feeling of activity for most.
Also, I have no problem with these websites having a social element to them for people who have something in common.(In this case, anthropomorphic art)
Probably worth suggesting in http://forums.weasyl.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?1003-Common-Suggestions-List !
After pondering for a little longer I came up with a grand unified theory of how to nitro boost the site!

Tons of great points! I know I'm definitely going to be giving little incentives for individuals to come see my work on Weasyl. This site is so robust and easy to use, and overall super convenient compared to FA. Thanks for making this journal! :>
My husband and I were talking about this yesterday. We all need to make an effort to make this a community! Each of us needs to take the time to make comments on submissions here, which will encourage artists to continue posting!
Also there are these if relevant to this journal!
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/waxpost-weasyl-crossposte/boddplgmdhddfmchbifhpdpekfdaenjc Waxpost, for crosspost purposes
http://projects.weasyl.com/soft/ to find friends/followers here!
Skylerbunny mentioned the cross post which was super helpful! I'm actually enjoying Weasyl, it's so much prettier to look at. It's definitely a bummer that it doesn't have as much traffic, but it has great features. I really like the now streaming feature myself! I'm trying to be active on both sites, and the FA outage has prompted me to upload to DA as well. It sucks there's no cross poster for that!
Maybe.. just maybe if they would implement an actual contact cross-reference ability on this site, instead of this slapped-together SOFT site that people are currently relying on... people might fully migrate over for good.
Migrating contacts has been and still is the biggest problem I'm having with trying to migrate over more permanently to this site, and the SOFT site is returning tons of false hits and bad account names because it's simply relying on things like user name A must be the same on both sites... and then there's the manual labor of having to tab-browse every single username...
I agree! It's hard to find everyone you've been watching.. and I think for a lot of people it's too much work. :/ I wish there were an easier way but I don't really see how. I got like halfway through my watching list to follow them here then I realized I just spent half an hour doing that and need to do something else!

I think another thing worth mentioning possibly? I think one of the few small reasons FA may be dominant in the moment is the fact that there is a social element there. Although this should not be the primary motivation for an artist, artists tend to love feedback and some sort of comments, or some sort of acknowledgment that they exist and are making progress. Artists here are contributing a lot by submitting so much work right now. However, I don't think a lot of us are taking the time to view and leave some sort of feedback on people's submissions(I am guilty of this myself). I think if we actively try to focus less on our own gallery, and browse other profiles and leave feedback, it may help encourage many users to stick around.
