So I've had an influx of watchers here, just wanted to say thanks for the follows! I know most of you probably came because FA has been down but hey! I appreciate the follows regardless. ^_^
I kind of hope that Weasyl stays somewhat active once FA returns just because I like this site more. XD It's nicer, better organized and omg the tag filters... <3
yea, i just wish it had some sorting on general browsing, and searching has a ton of unrelated results still
It is so terribly unreliable. I never regretted disabling my notes. :X It's a terrible site to do business on, you'd think after all these years they'd be better at keeping things running. I wish more people would shift over to this site or other ones that are more reliable, I would like to leave FA entirely but I stay for my commissioners.
This site is better than FA because IT ACTUALLY WORKS.
But FA is more popular so it's my go-to furry destination (unfortunately).
If more people migrate back here, it might give the mods more incentive to polish the place. Would be nice to see. As a result, it might motivate FA to improve on themselves as well.
I have never really liked FA, I left for a couple years because of their policies, then they initiated a ban on cub porn so I came back for commissioners. Just the layout of the site too, it's ugly and looks like something from 1998. In all the years I have been on there not much has changed and there has been little improvement. I know they are "fan supported" but so are all these other sites and they are a hundred times nicer. I stay only for my commissioners since most left DA and don't ever visit other sites, or flat out told me they can't be arsed to contact me outside of FA via my site. :x One year it was down for over a month, at least there are nice alternatives this time if it happens again. Hoping more people trickle into this place though, I'd love to be able to make this my main anthro art account and just keep FA as a redirect.
I've only been on FA for one year. I've also created accounts on dA and Weasyl in the meantime. I cannot pick up any traction on those two sites whatsoever so I'm just going through to motions there, upload a few commissions, and take off. All my friends are on FA and that's where I go to talk with my fur-iends and find other artists to commission.
FA does look over a decade old. I can propose a ton of fixes, like these:
* Folders!
* Page numbers when wading though gallery/scraps/favorites (rather than click "next" a bunch of times).
* Better search engine! Very few filters and you can't search your gallery/favorites. An example of searching: Type in *insert Pokemon here* and even with the SFW filter on, good luck wading through all the fat/vore/baby art. Come on guys, let me punch in a few more parameters.
* RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Notes!
* The 90's style message board format with the messages that stray to the right of the screen. Ok, other sites do it too but there's ways to improve on it.
* The 1280x1280 limit. Sure you can bypass it if you reupload the full-size pic but the admins frown upon that (and even gave me a warning early in my FA career).
* A max of 12 of those : iconusername : things per page.
* Better journal organization, tags, take a look at LiveJournal or Blogspot for examples.
* Site looks ugly.
* Site needs to stop going down.
* The only significant change in 2013 is the addition of the commission tab (which was in place but disabled up until that point).
It's almost 2014, if any furry site can't do these things, that's sad. I know several web programmers have presented better FA code but due to internal politics, the admins rejected them. I don't think anyone expects the inept FA staff to do anything about it anytime soon. Sadly, e621 and InkBunny look more versatile but knowing the content on said sites, I'm not going there.
The quality of said websites reflects on the level of professionalism of the furry fandom and that's just sad. :\
Also one more thing about FA:
* The Subject label when leaving comments. Does anyone even CARE or NOTICE any subjects other than "No Subject"? Get rid of it! :o
This site has EVERYTHING I want in an art site pretty much, and the staff actually care and there isn't so much drama between everyone. Maybe cause it's still small but yeah. I would love if FA implemented everything above and even more, but I doubt it will happen any time soon. So I just kinda hope and wish that more would move this way. The only thing this site lacks is more people using it.
Only thing Weasyl really needs is ability to edit (or at least delete) messages, plus a better search engine. Maybe the option to put favorites into folders and submissions into more than one folder. It's a step up from FA, just needs more people using it before we can see how good it really is. Weasyl needs more mileage, like a new car that's never been drivenc, just to see what it can do.
It'd be nice to have an edit, even DA doesn't have that. But I'd like to be able to hide comments too. I love that you can ignore certain accounts and tags. That's really handy. The search does need some refining but since the site is still technically in beta it's pretty good for a start.
Also realized one other thing I wish was on Weasyl. A SFW button/filter. I usually browse FA with the filter on but sometimes I want to toggle it on/off, usually to check out the content in a specific artist's gallery. Kind of a inconvenience if you're in the middle ground like me :o
Ah, for me I don't mind not seeing porn at all. XD I have all my tag filters set up to avoid most of that, but I can see how it would be nice for some to have a sfw filter. Though personally I don't think I'd log on to a site like this at work. XD
I can tell you're not too fond of adult art. X3 I keep the FA's SFW filter on about 95% of the time. I'm never at "work," I just don't want to see dudes making out ever (I'm straight so sue me). Furry porn is like trail mix, most of it I have to toss aside cause I find it nasty :x
*don't mean to make you feel uncomfortable with porn talk, I seldom ever look at it*
I agree, I plan to be much more active here; it seems nicer to talk to people, too. With less trolls and such. It's nice to see other people so serious about their art!
