Should I go public with my art? by KI-Fennec

Alright, I got to get this off my chest.

Ok. So my mom had found out about my art a couple years back and has been pressuring me to go public with it ever since. She’s been throwing ideas around like making T shirts, children’s books, stuff for various awareness, tattoos, etc. Recently, she suggested that I should make a mascot for the place I working at. She wants me to use my furry characters and is really insistent about it, but I really don't think it's a good idea. I know she keeps well, but I'm genuinely afraid I might embarrass myself because people might cringe or something. I've had a similar experience in highschool were I present a animation I made on LBP and that made people cringe. I felt awful that day. I really don't want to go through something like that again man.

I can draw a bunch of other things such as scenery, cars, humans, humanoids, etc, but lately it's mostly been furry art due to trades and such. Last time I drew anything other than that was back in 2020 and I was under a different handle back then. Also I'm really private about my art IRL. I know I don't draw NSFW, but just seeing a furry character might be enough for someone to start making fun of me.

Idk. Maybe I'm overreacting or something. I really want y'all's input on this, that way I can be definitely sure how to go about this.

Should I go public with my art?

Thanks, I'll probably show a couple of people inside and outside my circle to see their reactions. Maybe that will help me gauge if it's worth it.

You seem to have a good grasp on how to put the shading, give detail in the fur/feather, change outline colors to match surrounding colors, and your humanoids looks fine anotomy wise .. so yeah, looks pretty decent in my eyes.

      Thanks for your input!

Hopefully it's enough to win people over. However I'm still worried about the subject matter of what I draw.

You could always choose to create new characters, specifically to market in such things as your mom's suggesting. I think using your personal characters is more of a personal choice, pro artists do--but I also think sometimes a lot of the money-making pro artists don't have stories or attachment to personal characters as the more casual artists do. I would think that if you wanted to try making some commercial items in this way, to create new characters specifically for that use.

Perhaps a good way to start on that end is a more private kind of commercial item, such as Redbubble--in that way, art is promotional and not really attached to a personal (person) life. Also, Redbubble gives art a chance to sell based on "like"--so, a fandom (such as the furry one) may find your stuff wonderful, but other people will pass over and look based on their own interests. That really brings no harm to you. Something like that could be dipping your toes in the water, so to speak, to see how comfortable you would be at commercializing your art.

      Thanks for your input!

I was thinking of something similar. Making a character design for market is a whole lot less stressful that using a personal character.

I'll look into rebubble soon. It might be the safest way without potentially embarrassing myself. However, I'm still considering showing at least a few people both inner circle and outer circle my stuff and see how they react.

        No problem! :)

I know some people, especially furry artists, who have a lot of success on Redbubble and Gumroad and things like that. And Redbubble seems to be a safer thing--as you do the designs and they can be put on things "made to order", if I properly understand how it works.........so you're not going through and buying a thousand stickers and sell only a dozen. Your designs will be placed on made to order items like shirts, stickers and mugs--so if someone places an order for a mug, a mug sells with your design..........you're not investing in a sales of one hundred and have many not sell. I'm sure there's probably a minimal fee or something to stay in business, but there are more people out there who have experienced it and could know more. Even if you decide not to, you could read up on such custom print stores to see what it's like and if you know anyone out there who may have had experience with it, too.

I'd say keep personal characters and personas or fursonas private and have other stuff that can be public.

Thanks for the advice! Honestly that sounds a lot better and less anxiety inducing.

Welcomes and I agree that way only you can enjoy them and maybe close friends? Since this site has a friends only option.

But even if you just save them to your PC you get to still enjoy them.

Hey, friend! Since you're pretty active on Weasyl, I'd like to share my response with you that I've directly quoted from my response on Furry Network!

"I'd say follow your gut feeling. It's awesome to see how supportive your mother is and that she means well, but you still make the final call. If you're very unsure about it and get nervous/anxious by just the thought of it, don't do it. Something like this can easily backfire due to people cringing about it or because it simply won't do well. That would be effort wasted and in return it'll only make you feel horrible. I wouldn't want that for you so this is something that you really need to be sure about. You can also wait for a bit until you've completed most of your art trades and other projects, and feel secure and happy where you currently are in life. If not, definitely wait with something big like this as it can easily make or break you."

Thanks for your input! Also I'm probably going to be a little more active on furry network anyways, especially considering what's been happening to DA.

I might just start small and show a few close people as well as maybe 2 or3 outsiders. But I'm probably going to wait until I finish up any owed art and work on a few other subjects.

Absolutely understandable and you're very welcome!
