DeviantArt is up in flames + Thoughts on AI art by Shadane

I'm finally allowed to visit DeviantArt again after 3+ years of being banned and what do I see? Well, this news bulletin...
It looks to me like DeviantArt is allowing AI generated art on their site, despite pretty much most of their users voicing their concerns over how many of the algorithms are programmed to create images from existing images, most likely by artists who don't allow others to use their art, edit, or profit from it, and how little to no thought or creativity is put into their existence.
I've tried quite a few of these AI art generators out of curiosity for what the result may be, and the results were often nightmare fuel. I did like the original work itself, but it's clear the capabilities of these things are very limited. No matter what keywords I used, the end result was either a typical dog you'd see in everyday life, horrific amalgamations of human and canine parts, or just modified paintings of dogs or wolves with vaguely human shaped faces, but still 90% dog. The AI obviously doesn't know what jinmenkens are, but at this point, I'm convinced that people who think the entire species itself is inherently creepy because of how they're portrayed in popular media don't know what real fear is. I don't plan on trying any other monsters or cryptids after that, but I'll talk more about my experience with it later.
I'm not sure how to feel about this in general, but I feel like if DeviantArt is this adamant about allowing computer generated images on their site, they should at least implement a policy that makes submitting these pictures to your scraps a mandatory requirement. Some people say it's not art, therefore it shouldn't be allowed at all, and while I don't think it should be allowed, at least on mainstream art sharing sites where most of the art consists of actual hand-drawn work, I feel like saying it isn't real art would be an insult to the original artists the programmers stole from because it just feels like I'm saying the victims aren't real artists. I place full blame on the programmers who programmed algorithms to use other peoples' art without their consent.
My overall stance is, I don't think AI generated art is really "the future" like the folks who support these programs say it is, and I prefer drawing all of my content by hand. Artificial intelligence won't help me get any animating done, or at least not the animation I feel looks good for my stories, I'm not interested in NFTs or Cryptocurrency, and you guys know me by now. I'm basically an animal who likes to paint pretty pictures that never truly fit into society, I have feelings for nature and while I do still understand human thoughts, needs, and desires, art and computers in my opinion don't mix unless the art was hand drawn in an art program on a computer. Mouse, tablet, paper, doesn't matter. I prefer doing things traditionally. And while my opinion isn't the end-all, be-all in whether or not AI generated imagery takes off in the near future, I just don't like using it, and I tend to try and filter it to the best of my ability.

I’m pretty sure Deviant Art is going to become a Dead Zone in the coming months—from every journal I’ve seen from people here. It’ll probably be a place a true artist won’t want to be at anymore.

Yeah, it seems at this point like the old staff there are sick of managing the site and so they're doing everything they can to try and kill it off, but that's probably just me.

      • Link

Sad to see happen, since it was one of the first large havens for artists online. But if they want to destroy themselves for fun and profit, I suppose most normal people can’t stop it. :/

Deviantart is trying to kill itself it seems .-.

Yeah, I agree. I used to come there a lot throughout my life before the new layout was implemented, removing so many useful features and now this. It's not looking good for DA so far.

The heck is with the ending? I'm just going to remove that bit of nonsense.

Deviantart is a disgrace to the art community. When AI content generators are primarily used for and created with content theft, and they're letting it run about willy nilly it's just awful. Feeds being horrifying spammed to death drowning out creators as well. The fact that DA has not opened discussion about how AI generation is primarily used and how they'd combat it, is sketch. Same with NFTs and them promoting the use of NFTs. ((Ah, here's another ai thing that happened recently. Artist just died and someone shoved his art into an AI program before he was even burried.)

My opinion on AI art, Content Theft aside, is that it isn't art made by the person at all. The person is more in the position of "requesting a commission/free request" of the program. I would be wholly insulted if someone i made a commission for claimed they made the art because they gave me vague prompts of "style of Averalis, Fish fighting Turkey, Blue Mountain Background". The same as if A person ordering a custom Burger from a restaurant isn't the chef. The same as someone telling a modular house company what pieces of modular they want in their house aren't the ones who made the house. It was all made for them, not by them.

That's kind of the reason why I was afraid to come back at all aside from a few personal matters. I have heard about another big artist who passed away and had her artwork stolen, I believe it was Qinni in this case. She was actually one of my biggest inspirations as a kid and why I decided to take my animation hobby more seriously and study it later on in life so I was shocked when I found out. It just feels like scummy grave robbery in my opinion.
Even though it's unlikely that AI will replace organic artists anytime soon with the current quality of the art generated, I've been worried about that when it eventually improves because I imagined nobody would buy commissions from me because they'd rather have an AI create portraits for them.

HOLY CRUD! Makes me glad I left Deviantart.

Yeah, I don't really see much reason in going there anymore myself. Most of their userbase died off because they keep making the same mistakes ever since Wix bought out DeviantArt, and some of the active artists there complain that the only traction they get nowadays is from bots.

      • Link

UGH! Bots are so annoying I was getting a fair share of the stupid things myself.

        • Link

Same. Even before the 3 year ban, I started getting automated comments and spam after a while and I would mark it as such.

          • Link

They need to clean up bots and trolls so normal people like us that want to use the site for art can return.
