PKMN Scarlet/Violet new trailer by keirajo

Welp...........what do you guys think?

I can tell we are forcing a big multiplayer aspect on it............so, I admit I'm not hoping for anything better than Sword/Shield now. :/ To be honest, I wonder how much IS actual REAL gameplay footage and what isn't--I know there are times when on the screen it says "not actual gameplay footage", but I have my doubts that some of the other things shown that is supposedly gameplay footage is ACTUAL gameplay footage, either. hmmmm

The couple new regular Pokemon revealed don't look too original. sigh

But I do think the Legendaries look kind of interesting..........dragon/kaijuu-esque.

Meh, but with a focus on multiplayer, AGAIN, I hold very little hope for an actual cohesive PLOT for "you" as a single-player. :<

I'm absolutely obsessed with Lechonk, not just for the name but I like the little pig (reminds me of the pigs in wind waker!) and the little Olive mon, but everything else just doesn't sit right. They're weird but I'll get used to them. The pika-clone looks uninspired and I'm not particularly thrilled by either of the legendaries like I have been previous games.

I'm likely not going to get this game unless something absolutely convinces me to (like Legends did). It's offputting to see highly detailed models with the mons and the trainers but then you can smell the pixels of the background environments.

Being that I'm not really much of a Pikachu fan to begin with, all the "knock offs" that they produce in each new game make me never want to use them. I'm even less a fan of Pikachu now that they're using the anime soundclips for it and not the original game soundclips. :/ If I hold my Switch far enough away and take my glasses off.........I could easily mistake Morpeko for Pikachu. XD

I think, at least, the new Legendaries have some bit uniqueness to their designs this time around........I feel like our S/S wolves were one design that they cookie-cuttered to make two--pretty much stealing a base from Lycanroc. And given how much I love wolves, I should've been more excited about them, but I wasn't. Even when we got the Tundra stuff with new Legendary-level types.........the horses are cookie-cuttered from Rapidash and I've never known much of what to make of Calyrex, honestly. XD Given I like dragons and kaijuu--at least I have a little bit of excitement for the new Legendaries, probably at least until I find out their Typing and what they can do. chuckle

I feel that they've gotten extremely lazy, with how many "new" characters are cookie-cutters of previously existing characters and a part of me feels that it's just........they can make small tweaks to a game sprite and let it go. Do designers really sit and think of anything truly new and unique anymore? I feel less and less enthused as they rush the games, have little uniqueness and design--and, as you said, not much graphical improvement. I'm sure the developers will say that to have a multiplayer online game like this, the frame-rate-blah-blah-blah, as the reason you can SEE THROUGH SOLID OBJECTS in the games..........they'll then give the excuses that it's not about the game, but in playing with other people. GameFreak, if that's how you feel, then please hand the franchise to a company that can make a good multiplayer online game with GREAT graphics (you know they're out there and would LOVE to be handed the Pokemon franchise to develop!).

I wonder if we'll finally see some new Eeveelutions this time around--it's been a very long time since our last one (Sylveon). So, if you gotta give us a cookie-cutter Pokemon.........at least give us a new Eevee. XD

I kinda like the little piggy, too.......though it does remind me a lot of a ground-walking, re-colored Munna right now. I'll be curious to see its evolution! Like a warthog, maybe? :)

Pikaclones: It sucks they all just look like TF(Tranformation) pikachu in recent games. The last pikaclones I really liked were Plusle/Minun and Pachirisu as they were all very unique in design and origin. BUT Pikaclones don't Evolve and are not strong. That makes me weep. They can't even compete with Pikachu because they stunted them with no evolutions. ((Not to mention Emolga that could have been an easy Pachirisu evolution).

I also def agree that I'm not very happy they gave voice actor cry to Pikachu. I actually really like the pokemon cries better. They're a lot more fun.

        • Link

It makes the Pikachu sound like they don’t belong in the game, with such a different sounding cry. And now, Eevee is like that too—and it’s too jarring as a player.

I’m with ya on the Pikachu clones, it just keeps building on the lack of creativity in designs. They need to get a good monster designer to come in and draw them some new Pokémon. But it probably goes back to lazy—why waste effort when they can modify an existing game sprite, right? :/

Didn't watch, but I did see the new pokemon--Lechonk is a cutie xD I really like that red legendary pokemon too.

I don't mind multiplayer stuff, but I do hope we get a story this time we can participate in, unlike S/S where the NPCs were like "We'll take care of things, just go get the badges" :/

    • Link

Yes, it was very sad that anything that was like a participating storyline was the whole Calyrex deal in the Tundra. :/

Looking at the names of the Legendaries--it looks like this may have to do with "time", which makes sense, as Legends: Arceus dealt with time as well. Because the core Japanese word of each of the Legendaries names have to do with "past" and "future". They also use the suffix of "-don", which tells me dinosaur as well. XD

I feel that as long as they focus on multiplayer--I highly doubt we'll get any decent storyline in the game, to be honest. But I hope there's a little bit of plot effort put into this game.......

The game may have to be skip for me due to eyestrain, which might not be a bad thing given the only that my attention was goofing around with sibling multiplayer.
the eyestrain got me curious so i went on a deep dive greyscaling and pixelating various screenshots from various games. The straining segments of SV had the protag be barely visible with trees or nearby buildings as a standout instead. Even compared to the brighter colored games I've played, the problem segments felt bright in comparison (Somehow it made wind waker hd look dark). The other ones still had the character being played be easily spotable as the SV ones had them become one with the pavement and grass.
All the designs didn't really click with me. The grass bulb read as a bootleg budew to me. Any hits are barely that. The legendaries are definitely misses for me and they feel somewhat overdesigned.

    • Link

Yeah, there were so many times when I'd be going around buildings or rocks/trees and the pixelation/see through was just awful. The supposed "smart" camera angles were also pretty miserable--like the days of the downfall of the Sonic franchise, where camera angles were the death of you. It seems like the faster they rush the games to get out on a "world wide basis", the less effort is put into them. Especially when it comes to graphics or new Pokemon designs.

Like I mentioned above, they're reusing too many base designs.......just because we have a "baby plant", it doesn't have to look like Budew. I have a feeling the new "electric mouse" is going to turn out to evolve into a Red Panda-based kind of creature--you can see how it vaguely resembles a cartoon-style red panda even now. If they have so much staff, they need to assign staff to work harder on designs or graphics, rushing a game to completion in a year is too hasty and devalues the franchise, honestly.

I'm still intrigued by the Legendaries right now, but it may only be until I figure out what their deal is--by the names, as I was evaluating them. They're using the Japanese words for "past" and "future", so this game may have to do with time-travel........maybe. But their Types may be a killer for me--I really didn't like the Typing of Zacian and Zamazenta. So, I hope these new Legendaries will have a better Typing.

All I have to say its...
    LECHONK

    • Link

Yep, that guy’s gonna get all the ladies! XD

The trailer seemed fine overall, but I am dissapointed that they have literal threads shown in character clothing textures, but the environment is still pixelated splotches as if the game was from the ps2 era. It is really creepy looking to have hyper realistic looking humans on the ground that looks like that. This feels like a game that is also displaying the MC as you and not a specific trainer in a story like Ruby/Sapphire Red/Blue Gold/Crystal.

I will most likely be skipping this just like SwSh because the game still doesn't look like they brought in an environmental artist yet again. You can do SO MUCH now even stylized to look amazing and pretty, but they got pixel png texture ground with grass that doesn't touch the surface and fade out of existence when you get too close. You know what ground looks WAY better and has similar asthetics? Genshin Environments! It looks beautiful, is an open world, and doesn't look like they paid an 8 year old who just got blender on their pc to build the world environment. And it's still stylized, but detailed at the same time. Hire an environment artist dammit.

POKEMON: Neutral on the Regulars. Cool Hotwheel legendaries. I'd want the Red one.
Multiplayer: I don't know what SwSh's was like since i skipped it (gladly) to compare.
Gameplay: it's not Legends Arceus capturing/Battling as far as I can see. Dissapointing as i really enjoyed that aspect of legends and how smooth and fun it was.
Rival: Soulless and unexpressive (same for NPCs)
Theme of Series: interesting theme. Plot alone isn't enough to get me to buy a game, though.

The multiplayer aspect of the S/S Dens really required you to have REAL PEOPLE to play with you. The computer A.I. was awful and made it hard, if not impossible to defeat most of the five-star Den Pokémon, unless you were maxed on levels. If Scarlet and Violet have something similar, it won’t be enjoyable at all for single players. :<

There’s so much more they can do, but I think GameFreak has become too lazy……they know that slapping “Pokémon” on it will get them money no matter what, so they really only need to put the bare minimum of effort into the game. The sad thing is, this graphical crap is visible easily in handheld mode, I’d really hate to see what it looks like on the television screen (have never used my Switch outside of handheld mode). @_@

I’m with you on the MC Trainer though. I’m tired of the “customize your trainer” crap in this series. They even retrofitted that into Brilliant/Shining, though they still used the Dawn/Lucas main character base. They can create a standard trainer, they don’t need to make it customizable anymore……it’s not fun and it’s boring now. You can have a base standard character, without it being generic. People can change their look with hats and clothes. If they wanted to go a customize route, we could have a choice from base characters. OH WAIT, IT GUESS THAT GOES BACK TO LAZY……we have to have the most generic thing ever, because anything more takes programming effort. :/

I’m still waiting to see what the final evolution of the Starters looks like…..with the interesting-looking Legendaries, maybe I’ll get my kaijuu-looking evolution of Fuecoco. :)
