Merry Christmas (2021) by TheOtherEliArts2001

So, Christmas has passed, both in the Eastern and Western hemisphere's of the planet.

This is literally the first journal I have posted as a twenty year old. And it's close to the end of the current year (being 2021 AD). My birthday was simple. It was an ordinary day, not one unlike any other. Although I do recall having cheesecake.

Though if I remember correctly, it was actually half a cheesecake. Apparently when buying a cake, you can decide whether or not you want a full circular cake, or to have it be cut in half. And my parents chose the half-cake option. It was different than what I was used to, but I don't think I really minded that much. I still got to have my cake and eat it too, and that's what matters.

Now, as for Christmas.

Again, not unlike any other day. But even so, I did receive presents. They are simple, yet could still be considered entertaining.

One of the presents was sent by my Baba (my dad's mother). It's basically a night-light projector of sorts, made up of a short black cylinder with a slot in the middle of the top. Next to the slot is a switch that requires a gentle tap of the finger to activate it. Inside the slot are lights that turn on when the switch is tapped. Repeated tapping of the switch changes the color of the lights.

Included with the cylinder is a clear screen with an artistic display of the solar system on it, and you can slide it into the slot. To be honest, it's very simplistic in its function and design. But in a way, it's fun. It reminds me of all the nightlights I would have during my childhood, as I found it utterly unbearable to sleep in the dark (and still do, to be honest).

Now as for my other gift, this one will require a bit of an explanation.

So as I was scrolling through the internet, I unintentionally discovered the existence of a science fiction novel called "The Three-Body Problem." It caught my interest, so I decided to do my own research about it without coming to know anything about the plot. It was written by a Chinese author by the name of Cixin Liu, and it was apparently the first in a three-part series of books.

I made the decision to read it for myself and see if I liked it or not, and I managed to find a website on the internet where I could read a portion of the book for free.

From what I've read, it turns out that I actually really like the book. The setting really pulled me into it, the plot is very interesting, and the author is really good at describing what's happening in his story. It's as if when I read the text, I can very clearly see everything playing out in my head like a movie.

Here's the problem though. I was reading a preview of the book, meaning there was only so much of it I could read, and if I wanted to read the whole thing, I would have to buy it. Luckily, when I told my mother about the book and how much I liked it, she made the suggestion of ordering for me as a Christmas present, and I was okay with that.

The books arrived maybe a week or so before Christmas itself did. I think I knew in my mind what exactly these presents were, as I could see the shapes even beneath all the wrappings, and they were shaped like books. When Christmas day arrived and I opened them, my suspicions were proven true.

My mother had ordered me two books written by the same author. "The Three-Body Problem" and "The Wandering Earth."

Funnily enough, though I still haven't yet finished reading Three-Body, I was already familiar with The Wandering Earth. This was primarily because that book had been adapted into a movie, and I had already seen half of it, not knowing that it was based off a book. I didn't even know who Cixin Liu was at the time of watching it. Even so, I didn't finish watching that movie, and this was primarily because the video player I was watching it on wouldn't finish buffering, and it was very late at night, so I had to compromise finishing the movie for going to bed. I never even bothered to try watching it again.

Perhaps once I've finished reading Three-Body, I'll read Wandering Earth, and come to know that story again in its original source material.

Anyway, I'm thankful for these gifts I have received. It's been a while since I've read any good or interesting books, and most of them were of the fantasy genre. These one's, however, are sci-fi. And so far, I quite like where the story of Three-Body is going. I can't wait to see how the rest of it plays out.

That's about all I can say, really. I write a new journal entry should anything new happen. Until then, thank you for reading.

And whoever is reading this, please take care of yourself, be safe, and be patient. I know it's been a rough year, but just hold on a little longer. Things will get better soon, as they always do.

May God bless you.
