Any Advice for Worldbuilding & General Character Writing? by KI-Fennec

So, does anyone have advice for world building & or general character writing? I’m kinda stuck at the moment cause I made my characters but lack a world, which makes it harder to write backstories that align with other Ocs, as well as being coherent in general. I’m also having some trouble writing out villain ocs property. I’d appreciate the advice.

Also, I’ll try to get some of my completed characters up by the end of this month.

I read this on my phone on Saturday, but was offline for the weekend, so I waited until I got back to work with wi-fi.

I think that one of the best ways to start is to find out what characters (kinds--including species, genders, etc.) you want in your world. If you have more avian or winged characters, maybe create a world where they live in the sky--for example. Then I think another thing is to decide the "time period" you want your world to have--do you want a more primitive with camps and tents or even caves........or do you want big cities and vehicles? I think once you decide those two important things, you can figure out the small details for your characters in the kind of world you want. If it's a more primitive, fantasy setting.......maybe view some Dungeons&Dragons books to get an idea of those kinds of worlds. If it's more sci-fi/advanced, maybe watch something like Star Trek. Finding a media that resembles your world can give you ideas on how you want the clothing to look and even how you want your characters to act and speak.

Once you have all those ideas, how you want your world to be--then you can begin tailoring your characters more specifically. It might help you shore up the biographies and if they are villains, then how bad they should be. It could help to even just get an actual physical notebook and pen and just write down some of your ideas--those don't have to be coherent, but once ideas are out there on paper, it may begin to come together for you to do the more detail work on them.

Thanks! This is helping me along nicely.

Also, apologies for the late reply. Been kinda busy for me lately.

Totally understandable--I have a full-time job and no home internet, so sometimes it takes me awhile to get to things. :)

I'm glad it helps! Sometimes, once you have a general idea--looking at media (books, t.v., comics or even other people's worlds) can help you see how others brought similar ideas together and help you develop a bit more. :)

Yea, looking at other media helps a ton too!

So far, I have a good bit of the premise and time period figured out as well as a detailed system of powers. Still need to work on the location.

I know that Star Trek and Dungeons and Dragons stuff really inspires me for sci-fi/fantasy stuff! :)

I’m glad that you’ve managed to get some good development on your world and characters! :D
