Let's do an ask -you- anything! by Nomax

We always do the AMA in august, so i thought what the flop, why not turn it around. Sure, february would probably be the more fitting month with it being the exact opposite of august, but unfortunately i dont have a time machine yet.

So, should be pretty simple, instead of me answering questions, it'll be your turn to shed some light onto some things i wondered about you and the others who follow my stuff.
Of course many of these can just be answered either yes or no or simple a picture title, but do feel free to elaborate a bit if you like.

  1. How long have you been following or been aware of my artwork?

  2. What was the first picture you saw of mine? (and if it isn't the same one, which picture made you decide to follow me?)

  3. What is your favourite picture of mine?

  4. Was Nomax (the character) ever part of any of your sexual fantasies? insert eyes emoji

  5. Has any of my art ever caused action beyond just looking at- and faving it? What i mean by that is like perhaps you got the artists of the amazon book because of that ant picture, perhaps you decided to support a painted dog conservation, or some painting simply made you hop onto wikipedia to dig a little deeper into something.

  6. Has my art ever been helpful to your own artistic journey? (As a study, or my patreon etc.)

  7. Was it perhaps even the cause of you starting to paint?!

  8. Painted Dogs or hyenas?

  9. What do you -dislike- the most about my art? ( No need to be shy. I'm very skilled at crying myself to sleep.)

  10. Make one suggestion to the character design of Nomax.

Let's do an ask -you- anything!

    1. Since 2017
    2. This one!
    3. This one I think
    4. Sorry but no haha
    5. I'm a chronic fav and runner
    6. No
    7. No
    8. I like both
    9. Not the art itself, but I dislike when artists preemptively put themselves down x)
    10. Got nothing, sorry
    • Link

Ohhh, yeah good picks for the pictures, hah! Thank you :)

  • Link

    1. Legitimately do not recall, though I want to say it has been 2 or 3 years? Feels like it could have been
    2. Again, do not recall, though believe it was a dragon picture of yours. If I had to hazard a guess, I believe it was the Dragon Statue or the Red Dragon
    3. Favourite is hard to choose... but I think it would be between Alchemist and Cyberpunk presently? I also love Dust to Dust, Dragonfly, and At the old watermill a great deal too
    4. I'm pretty ace, but I will say Nomax will make me swoon from time to time :P
    5. My moods ebb and flow a lot, but I will say that your art has put me into moods for particular genres. Especially with your more cinematic pieces with backgrounds and a world around the characters. your landscapes behind the characters are as much of a draw for me as the characters in some cases.
    6. I've only been starting to get back into art, but I could definitely see me using your art as a reference point for studies. I love your attention to anatomy, scale, and balance between lighting and colours in the scenes.
    7. I am intending to get back into painting, but space/time/fiscal constraints are slowing that process
    8. I want to say both, cause I do love them both, but I think I have to go Hyena's cause I like the chonkiness of them
    9. I suppose I would have to say that it feels sparse, but that is likely a result of the internet culture I've been raised in (immediate gratification and expectations of rapidly produced content) and less a criticism on yourself. Artistically, I don't have any dislikes, nor any critiques to be true.
    10. For Nomax, I'm curious of seeing him in other settings? I love the aesthetic choice with clothing made thus far, though I do adore seeing character put into other environments and the re-imagining of their attire/profession/characterizations within those spaces. I know it isn't exactly a suggestion towards the design, but I do find that helps me conceptually with characters I'm making.
    • Link

Yeah, the sparseness is often simply a constraint of the economics as well. I mean being an artist is my job and it would be hard to just survive through big projects simply because less people are able to afford them. So still like simple one character paintings just have to take up a decent chunk because that covers a price bracket that draws more people. Also -just- making large scale pictures would get tiring rather quick. It's nice to have a good back and forth between larger stuff and smaller stuff.

And as for #10, yeah i get ya. Though not sure just how flexible i really can or want to be. Like he is pretty set in that setting, of course i'd love to expand a bit within it, but for example space wouldn't be possible. But i get ya! There are some alternative versions of him which are essentially more suited to playing around with whatever.

How long have you been following or been aware of my artwork?
Well I started days ago, like, three or so. I found you by browsing here ^^

What was the first picture you saw of mine? (and if it isn't the same one, which picture made you decide to follow me?)
    https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/1999286/first-of-its-kind
First of its kind all right

What is your favourite picture of mine?
I honestly haven't checked the whole gallery, but that's the reason I followed =P

Was Nomax (the character) ever part of any of your sexual fantasies? insert eyes emoji
I don't know who that is. [Not yet.]

The window of time has been too short. I'd let you know in the future perhaps?

Has my art ever been helpful to your own artistic journey? (As a study, or my patreon etc.)
I watch a lot of artist just to look at their work and take refference, I'm pretty sure you could help at some point.

Was it perhaps even the cause of you starting to paint?!
Well, no. but you are one of the go-to artist i'd pick for realistic references.

    Painted Dogs or hyenas?
Both? I honestly like dogs the most- Hyenas are kinda untrustworthy. (?

What do you -dislike- the most about my art? ( No need to be shy. I'm very skilled at crying myself to sleep.)
I wouldn't know atm. Need to critically observe some more of your art.

Make one suggestion to the character design of Nomax.
So, Nomax is... an awd? Maybe some kind of outfit? The character is good the way he is, but maybe assigning a outfit tendency would give him some kind of... extra?
    dunno.

    • Link

Haha, yeah you might be the newest one who answeres so far! Guess it makes sense there that most questions aren't really answerable just yet :D

    1. Judging by my favorites, since 2016 on FA. It's been too long to actually remember!
    2. The first thing faved is https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/483851/arios-and-lamia
    3. This was memorable https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/1061868/a-chance-meeting although, I have a hard time getting this out of my head https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/1400279/skylight
    4. Well, this was also faved. https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/1737752/prep and oh my I missed this :) https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/1776748/say-hello
    5. No.
    6. Not really. Just so you know, What helps me is to find someone who's just 2 levels better than me in art, and then I can think "I could do that, if I just put that line there..." You are 20 levels better than me in art.
    7. No.
    8. Can I like both? Painted dogs are prettier, and think I was one in a vision where I looked back at myself? but hyenas have all this backstory. If the furry artist bothers to know anything about the real animals, automatically a male hyena is going to be submissive/bottom, and a female hyena is going to be the scariest dominant ever.
    9. I love/hate the painterly style. I'd of course love art done with infinite little details, but the broad brushstrokes get the art DONE. I understand the compromise, it's one I'd make myself, especially after suffering through projects that never get completed.
    10. Whenever possible, draw body language/expression that let us know what his personality is like. E.G. "say hello" XD I find those kinds of characters more memorable, and attractive. winks I'm really not skilled enough to suggest a change to someone else's fursona's character design. (Currently I'm feeling gay AF and would ask his sexy hips remain forever bare, LOL and it would be a sin for him to put a shirt on, and other potentially bad advice.)
    • Link

Hah, yeah trust me i am trying my best to keep him bare at all times lmao. And yeah i get ya on the last question, it's an area i certainly have to get better at yet it also feels a bit odd in most pictures. I suppose it wouldn't be something i need to get better at if it was easy :')

  • Link

    1) How long have you been following or been aware of my artwork?

I have no idea. Unless you were on !Y Galery. I discovered you on FA, because there were the two places I found Furry art in the days.

    2) What was the first picture you saw of mine? (and if it isn't the same one, which picture made you decide to follow me?)

Again, I have no idea what the picture would have been, but I would have come across by seeing it on someone else's dash, either as a favorite or a commission they were displaying. the quality of the art is why I would have followed you, AND probably because there was a tiger in your gallery.

    3) What is your favourite picture of mine?

That one is easy: OKay, not that easy. it's a toss up between this https://books2read.com/u/boY5jV and this https://books2read.com/u/3LDK7J I'm sorry for linking to my store page for the books, I could not find them among your gallery.

    4) Was Nomax (the character) ever part of any of your sexual fantasies? insert eyes emoji

No, I'm sorry to say Nomax never engendered that reaction in me.

    5) Has any of my art ever caused action beyond just looking at- and faving it? What i mean by that is like perhaps you got the artists of the amazon book because of that ant picture, perhaps you decided to support a painted dog conservation, or some painting simply made you hop onto wikipedia to dig a little deeper into something.

Well, your art caused me to seek you out so you would do the art for my covers :)

    6) Has my art ever been helpful to your own artistic journey? (As a study, or my patreon etc.)

No, I cannot say it was as I don't do visual art.

    7) Was it perhaps even the cause of you starting to paint?!

    Afraid not :)

    8) Painted Dogs or hyenas?

Because I've never had painted dog in my novels, I have to go with Hyena (hyena families are weird--Trembor)

    9) What do you -dislike- the most about my art? ( No need to be shy. I'm very skilled at crying myself to sleep.)

what I dislike the most about your art is that you are so talented and popular you are now outside my price range.

    • Link

Hah, sorry about the price thing, but hey, it'll offer some new artists a chance to get their feet wet and see their art on a book sold at conventions at whatnot. That honestly was the weirdest thing for me when i visited my first dealer's den. Had the big booth of whoever it was that carried your books and i was all like "ohh, i made those." :'D

And i'm glad i managed to help your project there. I've recently dabbled in commissioning stories and whatnot and learned a tiny bit about the whole literary side of the furry economy. It's really good to see that nowadays there are a few peeps who manage to make that their full time job! IIt probably isn't exactly a comfortable wage for anyrone but a handful, but that i guess is just the trade we all take when trying our hands at artists in a world that doesn't really value that type of labour to the same extend as others.

1.How long have you been following or been aware of my artwork?
At least 3 years or slightly before I started to upload more frequently here if I remember correctly. Your art has been striking to see on front page.

    2. What was the first picture you saw of mine? (and if it isn't the same one, which picture made you decide to follow me?)
Ah, https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/1564064/nomax-portrait this one, but I think I faves it elsewhere and followed you cross platform.

3 What is your favourite picture of mine?
It's between https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/1783932/spider-s-lair and https://www.weasyl.com/~nomax/submissions/1875654/ant on one hand we have an epic fantasy battle and on the other is a happy little ant.

4 Was Nomax (the character) ever part of any of your sexual fantasies? insert eyes emoji
Nope. He's handsome, but never thought of em that way.

5 Has any of my art ever caused action beyond just looking at- and faving it? What i mean by that is like perhaps you got the artists of the amazon book because of that ant picture, perhaps you decided to support a painted dog conservation, or some painting simply made you hop onto wikipedia to dig a little deeper into something.
The ant one made me think about watching AntsCanada on youtube that day. Since it reminded me of that. Otherwise, I only tend to stare upon the art.

6 Has my art ever been helpful to your own artistic journey? (As a study, or my patreon etc.)
I would say a little bit. The way you paint gives a good look at some things, but since I don't normally paint, but do cel, it's not something I often have brought back in my mind for reference material.

7 Was it perhaps even the cause of you starting to paint?!
Nah. Same reason for that it's some pretty different painting from my own. I have thought how neat it'd be to paint that way, but never did since it's not the way I'm comfortable creating. You and one other artist are in the same layer of "cool art, would like to draw like that. Don't wanna try though, so different."

    8 Painted Dogs or hyenas?
Oh. I like how painted dogs bodies are. They're neat to work with drawing. Ah, but if I was gonna have my sona, it'd been a hyena. If it were to choose what to pet, painted dog.

9 What do you -dislike- the most about my art? ( No need to be shy. I'm very skilled at crying myself to sleep.)
This one will be weird. I don't particularly like very humanoid animal people, so even though you draw really good humanoid animal people it's not my reason for watching you. It's solely for the art itself. I like how it looks. It looks like if I licked the art it would be bumpy. Ya don't need to change anything, it's just a theme of interest that I like feral, monster, and beast more.

10 Make one suggestion to the character design of Nomax
There is nothing I ever wanted to see changed from Nomax, though. I don't think I can answer this satisfactorily

    • Link

Hah, i see the trend here is that whenever there are some insects or spiders involved it'll be a favourite. :D
And yeah i get ya on the body shape, it's just one of those things where you can't ever have everyone's preferences present. So that's fine of course! :) Thank you very much for taking the time to answer!

    8. Painted dogs
    9. I got nothing

    • Link

Oh huh, i think all the paintings mentioned in #2 are mentioned for the first time from you. Interesting! And nice to hear too because i quite enjoy them!

  • Link

    1) Probably about April 2017. That's the date on the first picture I saved from you here (Medieval Methods, which may not be posted here anymore).

    2) Most likely the same as above.

    3) looks through saved pictures Hard to pick out just one. "Lounging", "Bathroom Stuff", "Blowmax", and "All Business" are highlights for me.

    4) Possibly either from "Blowmax" or (believe it or not) "Armor". >_>

    5) The local zoo has some painted dogs, which they name as "African wild dog". I've thought about your pictures when I was at that exhibit before.

    6) I only draw very simple sketches and/or make Photoshops, usually for people I know; I am nowhere near the level you are.

    7) See 6.

    8) Painted Dogs. I understand how their junk works. Hyenas are weird. :D

    9) Sometimes the background shows a lot of clone tool. (Example: "Dust to Dust"). Maybe that is a deliberate choice of style, but sometimes I notice it. It doesn't ever seem to be on the main character(s), just on the background.

    10) He should wear fewer clothes and stop by my house more often. <_<

    • Link

Yeah, african wild dog is just a different term for them really. There's a bit of a push in some conservation circles to go with painted dog instead because it's less of a negative sounding one, but you'll still find them more commonly referred to as african wild dog.
And hmmm... medieval methods should still be up, at least i never delete anything aside from commission openings...but maybe i just forgot to upload it over here back then, or the site was down when i was uploading it or something.
Hah for #10, always an appreciated suggestion :D

      • Link

And hmmm... medieval methods should still be up

It is still up. I either didn't go back far enough through your gallery here, or I wasn't spelling "medieval" right, or possibly both. :D I know I saw it here, because I save things in per-site directories.

I probably initially found it due to Weasyl's "recently popular" page. That helps me find new artists here relatively often. I wish some other well-known sites had it. :)

  • Link

    1) 5 years now, I think!

    2) This one. I frequently tag-search for "king cheetah" on furry art sites, they're still uncommon enough that I can turn up new artists by doing this. Obviously your piece stood out to me immediately!

    3) This Panzica portrait was my favorite up until very recently. I noted your inclusion of the whiskers, a detail that so many leave out. Artists sometimes get tripped up by having to put glasses on anthro animal faces (this is something I pay attention to, considering my own character), and I was impressed by how you kept the positioning very natural while still accommodating the non-human aspects of the face. Then your comm for Spots came along and knocked it out of the park! Love the perspective! The rendering is so detailed, especially the head - I'm a big fan of how your animal faces convey expression, even when incorporating elements like humanoid eyebrows, without pushing the face out of the realistic realm.

    4) I'm afraid not! This question also leads me to realize I don't know much about Nomax as a character. Of course I've seen him around once or twice, but your gallery is mostly commissions for others. Is there a write-up or character sheet anywhere that we can learn more about Nomax?

    5) Not at this time!

    6) I'm not an artist

    7) See above

    8) Sorry, but I gotta give the yeens my love! Female spotted hyenas are way cool.

    9) Your art is truly wonderful. The only negative I can think to associate doesn't really have to do with you or your work, but rather that getting a commission is financially out of reach for me. I still very much enjoy looking at the works you create for others.

    10) Nomax is your character, not mine, so I don't really have a say!

    • Link

Hah oh gosh i totally forgot about that cheetah portrait. It's weird to be so far along with the art thing by now where i can open my own pictures and be surprised that, oh right, that exists!

And yeah unfortunately i haven't really had the time to flesh Nomax out too much yet. I attempted to write stories but discovered, and by now started to accept that writing is probably not really my domain plus of course the ever-looming thing of just not having time for all the things i would want to do. There are two pretty old stories aimed at the older and now pretty much unused tribal character around, one written by me and one by Utunu, but yeah aside from that there isn't much unfortunately.
the plan initially way to just build it up over time through further pictures and all that but again, artists not having the time for their own pictures :')
