Adonit Jot Touch Review & Some Feedback Required by HatchlingByHeart

More information on the Adonit Jot Touch here: http://adonit.net/jot/touch

Please note that I do not work for Adonit and I am not paid to promote this product. This is a 100% independant review.

Honestly, I never thought I'd ever be excited to own an Apple product. The iPad for some reason seems to be the exception, due in part to the wider range of apps and accessories available for it. Once such accessory is the Adonit Jot Touch, the latest iteration of a long line of "Jot" capacitive styluses from Austin, Texas based company Adonit.

The Adonit Jot Touch features 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity, two shortcut buttons on the stylus itself (which can be configured to do a range of things, by default they are Undo and Redo buttons), Palm Rejection (only some apps), transparent capacitive plastic disc on the tip of the stylus ensures precise strokes while still allowing the capacitive screen of the iPad to register movement, with the exception of the plastic disc, it looks and feels like writing with a pen on paper.

While the touchscreen of the iPad can track the position of the stylus, Bluetooth 4.0 is used to connect to your iPad to send data not normally readable from your iPad's capacitive screen, such as pressure level and stylus button presses. Note that these features are only available on the iPad 3, iPad 4, or iPad Mini, and only with compatible apps such as SketchBook, Inkist, or Procreate.

If you have an iPad 1 or iPad 2 and/or do not have a compatible app, the Adonit Jot Touch acts merely as a standard capacitive stylus (none of the features mentioned above), but can still be used for reasonably precise drawing, however, on an iPad 1 or 2, you are better off scoring a Jot Pro instead of a Jot Touch, they are cheaper because they are just standard styluses (they lack the features you can't use on these iPads anyway).

My experience with the Adonit Jot Touch wasn't a bad one, but it did take some getting used to after years of using proper wacom tablets. Portability was the reason I decided to go this route for my art, as proper wacom tablets that are truly portable are expensive as hell, the cheapest I can find is a Microsoft Surface Pro, which costs $1000+. The Adonit Jot Touch costs ~$100 and my iPad 3 cost only $400, totalling only $500, plus ~$6 for a compatible app like Procreate, next to half the price of the next cheapest solution, and it's an iPad, one of the most well-known, supported, AND portable tablets on the market.

Drawing with this took quite a bit of getting used to, and learning to deal with a couple of features that are lacking. No app I've found on the iPad has the pen stabilizing feature that Paint Tool SAI has, but after experimenting, I found that I can draw reasonably smooth lines (still not as smooth) if I zoom in a considerable degree to draw them, which is very quick and easy to do on an iPad.

For the price (at least compared to Wacom tablets), it's very good for drawing on the iPad, and incredible things can come from it, but you should be willing to learn and adapt as if it were a different medium. A truly suitable solution for the aspiring artist on the go and on a budget.

Please note my experience with the Adonit Jot Touch is based on use of the Procreate app. Your experience may vary when using different apps.

Rating: 8/10 - If you are an artist, have an iPad 3+, and can afford $100, definitely get the Adonit Jot Touch. For other tablets or older iPads, consider the Adonit Jot Pro, which is priced around $40.

I drew a test picture with the Adonit Jot Touch, and linework doesn't appear to be as smooth as when using a Wacom tablet, but it still turned out better then I expected. What I want to know is how well do you think it will work for my future work? Is the lineart adequately smooth, or should I aim for getting a Surface Pro instead?
