The Fandom (documentary) - review by JohnStripedfur

For about three decades, there had been many different takes of documentaries on furries. There was the infamous ones back in the 1990s and 2000s and some good decent ones more recently. Let's just say the furry fandom itself doesn't have a great reputation and not sure if any professional documentarian would ever do one about furries. Unless it's about something juicy. I've seen my fair share of documentaries about other fandoms. From comic books to Star Trek to Star Wars to Lord of the Rings to even Twilight. All well made and all very positive while talking about the good and the bad things about them. It's only a matter of time before somebody has to do one for the furries. Even if it's by someone within the same community.

This documentary was done other than a regular furry by the name of Ash Coyote. She decided out of the blue to make one about the furries. Many wished her luck while others think it'll be too much because there are others who had tried, but gave up along the way. She stayed true and kept making it all the while gained support by many people. Hoping it'll be good and her hard work will show. It took a couple years and now, this past weekend, it came out on YouTube. I heard it was originally (?) suppose to be shown in an indie film festival, but due to covid-19 all film festivals had been cancelled. So now, it's on YouTube for all the see.

And it was THE BEST documentary about furries I had ever seen. I've seen my fair share and all had been great. And this one should be among those best documentaries. It's a very well made documentary about furries in general. It shows the history from the early days back in the 1970s and goes all the way to today. It shows how the fandom was perceived then and how it is now. I learned an awful lot while watching it and as a armature historian, I enjoyed the history parts of it of how it was created and how it grew and evolved in the 40 years of its existence.

If I have to critique it a bit is that it needs some tuning about the showing of the history parts. Probably keep it more contained on showing the history of the fandom on how it grew and evolved over the decades instead of going back and forth from the history part to the modern part. But, that's just the historian part of me that thinks it. Other than that, it's still a very well made documentary that showed pretty much everything about it. From the good parts and the bad parts. The MTV docuseries and the CSI episodes and the BurnedFurs part. I did find that part fascinating the most because the BurnedFurs were pretty much how the fandom is being done right now with politics and all. So, I find that very fascinating.

Anyways, The Fandom is by far the best documentary about furries and should be the one that should be shown to people who want to know about the furry fandom, how it was formed, the history, and how it means to many people. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to know about furries and to anyone who is a fan of documentaries. I would be looking for a physical copy of it when I get the chance.
