I have been pondering joining a social media platform. Weasyl is nice, but it never gained the sense of community that FA did, and with the spambot attacks a few months ago and continuing connection error problems, I probably should diversify. Twitter, for all its faults, seems very popular, at least among old friends and acquaintances.
So, any recommendations?
Seems like Twitter is where the bulk of people are. And where bulky people are. grow c.c But seriously, it's good because of all the folks there, bad because it's like a firehose of data sometimes that never stops. When you only check it periodically you may feel like you're seeing like 2 seconds of everyone's day and miss a bunch of stuff. Still feels like a net gain though. :)
I've tried to avoid social media. When I hear about something negative, a good chunk of the time, it came from twitter. From watching things unfold, it seems like a constant stream of things coming your way, which can be sensory overload. But I'm old, and a little jaded with how social media has functionally taken over face to face conversation in real life, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Advice from others I've heard from**. If on Twitter, set to friends only. Block often, use block lists. And clean out 'Trending' without looking at it. The user interface often changes, Twitter, like FA, seems to have a fundemental lack of basic coding competancey. Timelines from what I've heard, are a mess in twitter. The abiltity to lock out comments on ancient posts, a feature the long dead LiveJournal had, is still problamatic on Twitter.
Though Telegram is supposedly more 'private. It seems more Balkinized with it's numerous invite groups. Beware, some nasty folk have groups there.
Overall, which social media to use comes down to's a choice of what smell of dumpster fire you can tolerate.
** Disclaimer. I am not a member of either social platform.
Twitter, really, since the quick-post format is nice to get images out or post a funny blurb or two.
My recommendation is however that you make use of Twitter's word filter in the settings. Just fill it up to your preference. Twitter shows things that people you follow or people who follow you have retweeted or liked, so there's a good chance to get drama and/or politics in your feed. I found that it's easier to get upset or wrapped up in these than you may think.
If you stick to that, Twitter is actually pretty fun! They now allow signing up with multiple accounts at the same time on both PC and mobile, you can swap between them and keep your personal and furry Twitter seperated without having to constantly log in and out all the time ~
