Leaving weasyl by llMIXll

Honestly I don't want to upload stuff here anymore, site is always giving me errors and issues and I'm tired of trying over and over and over again to upload a single picture :/

You can always find me in my FA and my Twitter:

What if someone (like me) doesn't have access to either site? Then what?

    • Link

      Agreed, this is a tragedy

Sorry :( Is just frustrating, there's no way I can upload art here anyways, yesterday i tried without lying like ... 30 times to upload a single piece and it didn't worked at all ... and it has been like this for about two weeks.

I'll give it a lil bit more of time to see if the site returns to normal.

I suppose the site's performance has been pretty spotty lately, so I can't really blame you; though it is a shame.

I would advise uploading to multiple other sites than just FA or twitter, though. While they might seem "too big to fail" it's generally a good idea to spread your eggs to multiple proverbial baskets anyway.

Which sites do you recomend aside of weasyl, DA, FA and Twitter?

      • Link

I do have a couple of suggestions and summaries for ya, actually!

Inkbunny is feature-rich and has always been generally reliable, though I understand some of the allowed content could turn people off. But, it (like Weasyl and any other actually modern competently run site that isn't FA) allows you to blacklist tags so you don't have to see them. It even has a pretty uncommon feature where you can block specific users' uploads and not the user themselves, so you can avoid seeing a person's art if it happens to bother you without having to actually block ANY contact. It should otherwise be pretty familiar if you're used to FA and DA.

FurryNetwork isn't very active, but it's also stable so it would be a decent backup site. It's terrible for discovery (RIP people like me) but already-established artists seem to do pretty well there.

Hentaifoundry is active and similarly well-maintained. Not a furry site per ce but it does have tags and categories for furry art. It also has quality standards and moderation, unlike most other sites. My current experience is that new accounts get uploads that meet the quality requirements approved within 24 hours; your account will be whitelisted for upload auto-approval after a while of consistently meeting the site's standards. I don't imagine you would have difficulty on that front.

Newgrounds (yes, that Newgrounds) has also come back in to prominence by featuring artist galleries, so you can now use it as an art site as well; it isn't just for music and flash animation any more. I don't use the site myself, but I know a lot of people moved there in addition to Twitter after the Dumblr purge.

I know some artists put their own stuff on e621. It's pretty well-trafficked and probably has the single most robust tags and categorisation system of them all; character names, artist names, content descriptions, ratings, sources, you name it. Had a bad reputation (to my recollection) of not citing any sources, but that seems firmly in the past. I've actually found a bunch of artists I ended up really liking on there, and followed their other site profiles as a result.

And then there's Postybirb, which is an external program that lets you simultaneously upload and post to a bunch of different art sites at once, which makes managing multiple accounts much easier. I haven't used it myself, but I do see a couple of people use it.

And thus the site loses another person who is a great artist to bullshit sites rather than them having the intestinal fortitude to continue here...

Projecting by saying that Mix lacks any sort of fortitude is rather...well. Rude. Opinion or not, that could have been worded quite differently.
People leave sites all the time for ones that are actually functioning, regardless of how well / not well they're staffed / operated. Considering Weasyl's current coding issues and uploading issues, it only makes sense to leave, even if temporarily, to be able to still take on commissions or upload art, especially for financial purposes.

There's nothing there that requires any sort of fortitude if it means to be able to still put food on the table and keep the lights on. As someone who uses WL, FA, and other such platforms (based on your commissioned gallery pieces), you should be well-versed in how artists migrate around frequently across multiple sites.Am I defending the other sites (like IB that allows CP, or FA who has shoddy staff, FN for only promoting popufurs and popular artists, etc etc)? No, but all the same, you have to do what you have to in order to work.

Not going to lie... have been considering this too...

  • Link

I honestly think the same right now. I follow around 300 Users here, about 5-10 are actually using the site. If it's even working properly.
Weasyl was a nice experiment but, like Furrynetwork, failed miserably. FA with all it's quirks is still the number one place to go.

Everyone seems to agree that FA is the best alternative but how long do you think that site is going to last? The could shut it down in a week or a year from now. Neer no longer owns it as he sold it off a couple years ago. They might decide to nuke it or turn it into something else. Its always best to be prepared. I would suggest considering Hentaifoundry or Inkbunny as alternative sites to post your stuff. Both have a good amount of users.
