Pokemon S/S mini-view. :) by keirajo

Not a review technically.............and I intend no spoilers for this. But basically to give you my brief evaluation of the game.

1) It's EASY.

It is an honestly easy game compared to pre-X/Y series games. For one, the EXP ALL is in-built into the game now. It's not a device to turn on and off at will--so all of your party members (barring KO'ed ones) WILL gain experience in every normal battle of the game. Dynamax battles (raid battles) do not earn experience at all, but you earn items. Many of these items come from the "Pokemon Go" and other mobile style of game, with EXP Candies to feed your Pokemon. Rare Candies still exist, but if your Pokemon is just like 1000 points away from levelling up as opposed to like the 10,000 they might need at the start of a level, a EXP Candy is more cost-effective to use.

It's also easy in that, like "Let's Go, Pikachu/Eevee", you can see the Pokemon in the fields before encountering them--though there ARE some hidden Pokemon, generally denoted by a "!" and then waving grass that you can use to chase them down. I've played for about a in-game total of 2-hours now and have 3 Badges. Yeah, I don't normally make it that far in a game, even my fast-play ones. Not that fast.

Like more recent games, HM moves are gone, replaced by "services" instead. There are infinite use TM's but now there are TR's. TR's break, just like the old TM's of the older series. TR's can be purchased and won in Dynamax battles.

And also, access your Boxes from anywhere. If you are anywhere in the fields or exploring a city and you suddenly want to change Pokemon in your party, you can call up your Boxes from the Pokemon party screen and do all swapping there. What, we're not going to make people experience the pain of not being properly prepared???

2) Pokemon Camp

This is probably one of my favorite parts of the game, next to wandering the Wild Area. It replaces the Amie mini-game of making your Pokemon friendly to you and all that. In camp you can call/talk to your Pokemon, play with a toy (a "dog" toy=ball and a "cat" toy=wand with feather) and make curry. Curry and playing can have effects beyond friendship--they can heal HP/status and slightly boost a benefit for the next battle. In a way, kinda like "Final Fantasy XV", though you don't have Prompto's photos to look at before bedding down for the night. XD

3) The Wild Area

It is a massive, giant field type that goes for a long, long ways around a few cities. How do I know this? Even for as early on as I am in the game, I wanted to see how far I could go--and eventually got so tired of wandering that I had to call a Corviknight Taxi to fly back to Motostoke. However, you are limited to what you can catch, based on how many badges you have--unfortunately badges only give you 5 more levels up for Pokemon to catch and obey you. Rather than the standard 10-20.........showing the game probably expects you to be level 40-50 by the time you reach the Champion.

This presents some "but I can't catch them all" challenges. In the Wild Area, you CANNOT--listen to me--CANNOT catch Pokemon that are at a higher level than your badge lets you have Pokemon obey you. In battle, it will literally tell you, when you try to throw a PokeBall, that you can't catch it, the Pokemon's "guard is up". You can run around them, explore, find items and mess with Dens (Dynamax battles), BUT YOU CAN'T CATCH THEM IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE PROPER BADGE. You can fight them, though, and if you win you'll get massive EXP.

But as one who wants to "catch them all", it's very painful to see Pokemon in a field that you basically can't touch until you've defeated a Gym that lets you catch/obey that higher level of Pokemon.

Dynamax battles, wild Dens, I have yet to encounter a challenge I can't defeat. It lets you choose any Pokemon (even from your Boxes) and tells you the type of the Pokemon you're going to face--so, you can easily type-trump. And I've never NOT caught a Dynamax Pokemon I've defeated with just a mere PokeBall at this point. So you don't need to throw 30 PokeBalls to catch a "good" Pokemon. If you don't have local players around you, it'll provide you a team of A.I. characters to go into battle with, but only your Pokemon are allowed to Dynamax. And you get the catch. The A.I. are usually at least 90% helpful so far, too.

SO, ANYWAYS..........

I'm not saying it's a miserable game, but it is clearly a Pokemon game designed for "beginners".............and not the experienced players. Odds are, your favorite classic Pokemon isn't one of the ones who made the 400-count PokeDex cut. THERE IS NO WEEDLE. (There's Caterpie, though..........) One can have a lot of enjoyment running around the Wild Area to catch Pokemon, provided you have the proper Badge level to do so or making camp and playing with your Pokemon. The story has yet to intrigue me, though. I'm tired of the epic "they're going to destroy the world with a Legendary Pokemon" schtick they've fallen into. Why not go back to the style from Kanto and have a good, fun adventure without the end of the world looming over your head??? I mean, GameFreak is so enamoured of Kanto--why not make a game LIKE Kanto?

"But as one who wants to "catch them all", it's very painful to see Pokemon in a field that you basically can't touch until you've defeated a Gym that lets you catch/obey that higher level of Pokemon."

I sure hope they didn't do this for the sake of "balancing" because the games already stupid easy and hand-holdy as it is. It's a dumb restriction because it takes away the high risk/high reward factor of fighting and possibly catching pokemon you shouldn't be messing with lol

    • Link

I'll bet anything it's in that "balance" thing. Because unless you've got a hack for the game, it won't let you do it at all. I literally tried both methods..........throwing a Quick Ball at the start and weakening the Pokemon. I actually had a Ghost-type down to a sliver of health in one of these "too high for me areas" and paralyzed and when I tried to throw a 'ball at it, I STILL got the message that the Pokemon "has it's guard up". wry laugh

You've played FF15, so you might kinda get it. The Wild Area is a LOT like FF15's massive exploratory world. You can walk pretty much anywhere in the Wild Area and it's HUGE--I was surprised when I found out I'd walked around and was near Hammerlocke, which is a good distance Route-wise from Motostoke. But like in FF15, if you get to an area you're NOT supposed to be, the monsters are really out of your range to fight. XD

      • Link

I wish they did it like the anime where the pokemon would just slap the darn pokeball away if they didn't want to get caught--at least make the restrictions interesting xD

I couldn't run the game, actually xD But I've seen enough to know about those bad areas. Do you get anything special for fighting monsters you aren't normally supposed to fight yet? :o

        • Link

Scads of EXP and that’s about it! Both in FF15 and here! XD

I just took on a Lucario I couldn’t catch, of course and got like 3000 EXP per party member, because it was like 10 levels higher than me! XD

          • Link

            Noted xD

            That's a lot @_@

            • Link

Yeah, but it still sucks you can’t catch them! :<

SO, I don't have the game but I have been following along with various folks streaming it. I can say that it is both a game that can be enjoyed, but also you can still be frustrated with how the game is directed. Especially after last year before anouncing it that they were making a main series game that "experienced players" can enjoy. Hand holding is one of the most frustrating features of all of the 3D-series of pokemon games, and it disgusts me. No actual discovery. (and the PC everywhere thing is kinda weird. you have all your pokemon with you at all times basically)

Ah, but I can't deny that having watched folks play that it isn't fun to watch them and their experiences. Looking back on other games, I think ruby/saphire up to Diamond/pearl probably had a good amount of pokemon to find and catch and they were around 400. However, specifically diamond and pearl had fun features where even more pokemon flooded after end game from time to time and i always thought that that concept was really fun in those games. (HG/SS also did this, but in a day to day event instead of all over). I hear the end game doesn't have all that much to offer?

I haven't experienced to much of the game, though. I am a little dissapointed that a lot of the new pokemon either fall into the category of "replacing X pokemon that went with Dexit" or "Furry bait". I'm sorry, but there are not enough Monsters in this gens pocket monsters. They're just so so very many humanoid anthro ones. All the starters are humanoid again, and there are just so many others too like obstigoon and the poison/electric purple dragon. (Perple dragon is really neat, though. i like him). I don't dislike those pokemon, but they don't make me feel liek they are the same as the other monsters they have.

I agree that it sucks you can't catch over leveled pokemon. They could have just made those mons not listen to you similar to trades ones but even more cranky. a bit disappointing. AH, but I like pokemon wandering around on screen and being able to run around them.

I here a lot of poeple really dislike Hop, especially in the beginning. I watched from the start of streams only once, and he did in fact interupt so so SO many times in that bit I stayed for that day.

It is a game that is geared more for beginners--there is far more handholding than is absolutely necessary and they're not really teaching people much about playing a real Pokemon game. If they had taken like 2 or more years to work on the game--they could have done something where you could adjust settings for a beginner or for an experienced players, like many RPGs have. I've played enough RPGs to know you are generally given an "Easy", "Normal" and "Hard" option right at the start (beating an RPG can net you a "Super Hard" option, sometimes)--it changes monster spawns, item drops and EXP given, as well as the difficulty of the battles. GameFreak could have done this, especially for a CONSOLE game--they were still treating it as a "handheld" series game and rushing it out within a year or less.

The game has moments and one of my favorite RPG things is fulfilled by it--the Wild Area lets me wander and explore, which was my absolute part of "Final Fantasy XV". The Pokemon, though............I'm still surprised at things they've given Galar Region Formes. Um, like Stunfisk............and WHY??? I think one of the neat new ones is the Steel-type elephant Pokemon, both of it's evolutions are actually a nice Pokemon-esque design and have an actual reality-based thing. The fact that copper turns green over time--so the first form is "copper" (I dispute that orange is copper) and the evolved form is green, that is a VERY nice touch. You're right about the "too many humanoid" forms, too. I'm not sure if they're going too far with anthropomorphization on things or not, but...........yeah. Some of that overshines the nice, subtle designs.

Hop is indeed a strange one--he is VERY MUCH Ash from the older Pokemon anime. He is so much like Ash that if you found him annoying in the first couple years of the anime, you will find Hop incredibly annoying to you now. XD But............Hop does change through the game, about halfway through, his spirit is kind of broken and you do feel a bit bad for him. The character I don't like is Bede, he's like every other classic "rival trainer" and is too focused on "reaching his goal" to consider the damage he causes in his wake. Yeah, sure, they gave him the tragic orphan history and all, but you really can't care about a tragic orphan when they act like that. In all honesty, as bits and pieces of the history of Galar are revealed to you, I'm like shouting at the game--how did you not know that?! Because the buildup to the end of the world is ridiculously obvious, story-wise. There's no real surprise in it............and if you haven't figured out Dynamaxing is screwing up the world after hearing about the storm that once devastated the region, then you really are a moron. laughs The fact that a storm swirls over a Dynamaxed Pokemon should tell you "that's not good" right away. chuckle

There are things to enjoy, if you just want to wander around and collect things, but this isn't a game to play for a challenge or story--it's a game to collect Pokemon. They've made it so easy to fulfill a PokeDex in a single game alone...........except for the fact there are "version exclusives", you really don't even need to work hard to get full evolution chains. I see Pokemon of "trade evolutions" (Gengar, Machamp, Steelix) roaming in the Wild Area--so, you don't even need to trade Pokemon to get those special evolutions anymore. Basically the only thing you need to train for are the version exclusives. So, they've really also taken away the trading aspect of the game, too. I know that it's most likely because you won't be able to fully do trade until they get "Home" running, so they've basically made it so you don't need to trade.

Honestly, I am not making that same mistake I did with Sun and Moon and picking up the game right away. Yes, USUM were still pretty blargh storywise but I kind of want a fixed game if Sword and Shield will get this treatment. Seeing how X and Y went, there's a chance at 'No' and we go straight to the Sinnoh remake. Not being able to 'catch them all' in a game where your hand does get held isn't worth it.

[Besides. Chances are I can enjoy Generation 8 in other ways like with fan fiction or with Mr. Buddy videos or videos discussing Gen 8 or its issues.]

GameFreak needs to take a couple years to do a game and not rush something out. Pokémon has lasted over 20 years now, so I honestly don’t think people will forget about Pokémon if they take about 2-3 years to make the next game.

Being that this was made as the “first console Pokémon series game” from GameFreak, there were many things they could have done to make it fun for BOTH newbies and classic players. Most RPGs I play anymore have difficulty levels—GameFreak could have done this. S/S unfortunately shows that it was clearly under development for the 3DS when at some point they chose the Switch. I don’t see any believable explanation they built this from the ground up for the Switch! Graphical consideration only went to the Pokémon and NPCs........unfortunately there are times I can see through objects and see their pixels on EVERYTHING for background and environment. That’s no improvement over Sun/Moon, really.

Considering you can catch every Pokémon, barring version exclusives, in a single game—of that 400 PokeDex. It’s made for the lone mobile player who learned about Pokémon from “Go!” You can catch even trade evolutions like Gengar and Machamp IN THE WILD. There’s literally no effort a player intends to make for the game.

With the Global Link ending for all the 3DS family of games and knowing that online battles and trades are THE THING of all modern Pokémon games. I don’t see how this overly simple game will fulfill those purposes, especially as you’ll need a paid Nintendo online subscription and the Pokémon Home app come March. The Pokémon present looks very dim for all the longtime fans, but will Nintendo get enough newbies to make up for it?

It's a shame. Bede could have been my favorite Pokemon rival character-wise but he's in such a shabby game! I also liked a Nessa and Milo as well as the other Gym Leaders. There seemed to be no sign of an Elite Four anywhere which baffles me because you have Gym Leaders now that give you a rematch main-game? Like what?!

Also, people roasting the Piers singing cutscene was hilarious.

        • Link

Yeah.......they’ve kind of made the Gym Leaders a “sports league”, so I suppose there’s no need for an Elite Four when you just play sports in seasons. If I understand right, the Gym Leader orders change in the re-challenging?

Already the equivalent of DLC is starting. Until January a Gigantamax kind of Snorlax can be caught in the game. So my guess is, the game relies on Internet as well to shuffle up things in the post-game and all.

The sad thing is, GameFreak merely needs to point to sales to see that “this is what people want”—rather than listening to everybody complaining about it. They can use the sales stats to keep making this type of the game in the future, although they promised the “next game” will have a full PokeDex. :/

          • Link

Sounds awfully fishy if you ask me. I am honestly non-plussed by the idea of DLC being introduced in Pokemon but I understand.

This next game however I hope is a SW/SH rehash but if it is one of those 'Sinnoh remakes', it works out too.

            • Link

I don’t honestly know how much rumour is true, but I recall hearing before S/S came out and the limited PokeDex caused an outcry. But I read somewhere that the next game will have a full PokeDex but it sounded like a “third” game to S/S.......like how some of the older series used to be. Because I thought what I read said the game would focus on that legendary dragon from the Galar Region. I suppose we can only wait to see whether the game is a S/S supplement or a remake of Shinou/Sinnoh or maybe even Isshu/Unova.

I add the latter only because of the surprise throw-in of so many Pokémon from the B/W games, here. There were a lot more than I expected, frankly! So it made me wonder would they skip Shinou/Sinnoh and go to Isshu/Unova instead. hmmm

              • Link

If that were to be the case, it would be a shame I can't replicate my Pokemon Diamond Team and get a West Sea Gastrodon to destroy the Elite Four... Sinnoh was that one game I couldn't quite manage to properly defeat without certain Pokemon, But them remaking Black and White would be a good thing. [Though maybe they added so many B/W to make a connection of Unova with Galar seeing England colonized New York lol]

I am hyped with the possibility of 'Pokemon Armour' as it might give people hope.

                • Link

It would be interesting to do a remake of Isshu/Unova............would they go straight from B/W or would they mash together B2/W2 with B/W? Try to unify the stories a little bit instead. In a way, that's what HGSS was--it blended Gold/Silver with Crystal.

GameFreak kind of has a "thing" though--with teasing the next remake. Ever since "Platinum", which teased Johto (HeartGold/SoulSilver), many of the games that came out would give a hint of the next remake. HGSS teased Hoenn, with Steven Stone being very visible throughout Johto and Kanto of the game, including trading Pokemon with you--and the Hoenn Legendaries being post-game content--then we got ORAS. X/Y and Sun/Moon teased a lot of Kanto and we got the "Let's Go" over-simplified Kanto remake.

We'll have to wait and see what that brings. At this point, it's hard to tell whether GameFreak wants to keep their long-time fanbase or build a whole new one--slapping the rest of us in our faces. XD

                  • Link

That's a good point. I noticed more hard-core Pokemon fans going for Platinum as Diamond and Pearl weren't as big. Not sure what the new game will pertain, but best case scenario it is a fun little adventure in Galar for more hardcore Pokemon fans with a full Pokedex and a chance for the Gym Leaders to be challenging, maybe introduce a new mode.

                    • Link

I hope so, being a console RPG they can do the "easy/normal/hard" thing that all RPGs do.

I sincerely loved HGSS and I always thought it was very cool you could wind up with Pokemon whose OT ID was "Brock" or "Steven" or "Sabrina" (legally and not just a fan taking that name! XD)--the Gym Leaders would trade Pokemon with you and that was great interaction of NPCs!

                      • Link

I honestly didn't know that but if I ever pick up HGSS again, that sounds like that would be lots of fun!
It would be fun to pick up the Tsareena from Milo after defeating it, too!

                        • Link

Yeah. Steven will of course ask for a Steel-type for trade—he wants the evolution of Pineco. But he gives you Hoenn Starters. He will trade and give you Pokémon when you meet him in various places. The Gym Leaders you have to look for to trade with, like Brock is in the Rock Tunnel. :)
