Joker - movie review by JohnStripedfur

Here's a movie that has been getting a lot of attention in the past couple months. From critics praising it to several people having some concerns about it. From many people saying it's a movie about how society treats the mental illness to few people saying it might cause violence. All of that from a movie that supposedly is about a comic book supervillain.

When I first heard they are making a movie about The Joker. My first thought was, "Why?". There's no need for an origin story of Joker because there's no true origin of Joker. Even Joker said he preferred that his past to be multiple choice. His origins ranged from a rundown comedian who had a bad day, a gangmember in the wrong place in the wrong time and was accidently pushed by Batman in a barrel of toxic chemicals, to a mob hitman who killed Batman's parents and got mad along the way. It seems the combination of the last two became the widely accepted origin from many fans. And from what I heard, this is just a one off movie that's based on the character and is more of a character study and doesn't have anything to do with the comics at all. So, I started to get interested in the movie as it gets closer and when I keep hearing lots of praises about the movie itself from many critics and several people. I got curious about it and want to see it for myself. To see why some people fear it and others praise it.

The movie is definitely not for everybody. I can see why some people would not feel comfortable about this movie, but I can also see why many people praise it. It's an homage to the movies of the 1970s like Taxi Driver. It's almost like Taxi Driver. Instead of the main character becoming a vigilante, the main character becomes a supervillain. It's very dark and felt very real. The movie may set in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but it felt like it's a commentary about today as well. As you watch, you felt some sympathy and bad about Arthur Perry. Because he's a guy that is trying to get by and wanted to become a comedian. But, he keeps getting beaten down, literally and figuratively. And you seem him progressed on what we see as Joker. It's a question that who or what creates a villain. The person itself or society itself. At a few points, you were rooting for Arthur to not become Joker, but we can see it is inevitable. It's a movie on the commentary on society as a whole and how we treat people who needed help the most. It's not meant to make you sympathize with Arthur/Joker, it's meant to make you understand Arthur/Joker. He's still a mass murderer and a monster, but we can see why and how. It's pretty much a character study that makes you think.

I really did liked this movie. It is very well made. The directing is great, the acting is tremendous, the effects are great, the cinematography is great, and the score is great. Joaquin Phoenix was brilliant in this movie. I would be surprised if he wasn't nominated for best actor. Heck, I would be more surprised if this movie wasn't nominated for Best Picture. Though, I would have to say that this movie is not for everyone. For anyone who isn't keen on seeing dark themes, portrayal of mental illness, and senseless violence, you probably don't want to see this movie. For anyone who is a fan of movies, I do recommend it.
