The Pros and Cons of New Pokemon Reveals........ by keirajo

So, technical stuff has come out recently on "Pokemon Sword/Shield". I'm sure this will rile up people--and maybe even make some people happy. Some stuff feels it contradicts, some I think they're stating this now and may amend it later.

1) There are to officially be about 800 in the Galar PokeDex, but not every single Pokemon there is to date. Serebii.net has a running tally of what's currently in the Galar Pokedex based on all reveals so far if you'd like to check that out. The reasoning for this is technical specification (and other such similar technical stuff) and balance between characters. Of interest, though--Mew is listed in the Galar PokeDex so far...........will this be catchable in the game--or perhaps one of the first special gift Pokemon of Sword/Shield (not one imported from another game, such as Meltan)?

2) Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves will not be in these games at all. (I would even go so far as to say that Kyogre, Groudon and Rayquaza are probably eliminated from this game--I suspect most classic Legendaries will be--because of their unique evolutions and gameplay mechanics.)

3) Pokemon Home will be able to handle all Pokemon, regardless of what Sword/Shield can hold. This probably means that you can't trade between "Go/Let's Go" unless that Pokemon is in the Galar PokeDex. However--Pokemon Home WILL allow you to trade between Sword and Shield if you're one of those people who likes to get both games, this is a huge benefit to me, as I do like to do that.

4) A few new Pokemon were revealed in screencaps/trailers/demo recently--the Electric Corgi, Yamper, and the Dark/Fairy, Impidimp. Plus a squirrel-like Pokemon that hasn't been fully revealed.

As we creep closer to an eventual release--how does it make you feel that maybe your favorite Pokemon won't be in it? That you may not even be able to bring your favorite Pokemon to the game? It certainly puts a limit on this game for "catching them all", don't you think? Now you can't possibly catch every Pokemon and have them in one game! Do you think, even though they say they won't amend this with patches, that they will break down and patch the game so every Pokemon will be in this one............or will we need to wait for the NEXT Pokemon game to be able to "catch them all"?

They managed to get my hopes up, and then crush them. No mega evolutions or Z-moves at all in the games? That alone made me reconsider getting it, but then they lost me at the limited Pokedex. The national dex has been in every game I've ever played, my biggest achievement in any Pokemon game was completing the national dex in OmegaRuby. You can't catch 'em all if all the Pokemon aren't gonna be in the game. >.> Sword/Shield already sounds like a dumpster fire in the works.

Yeah. I think the devastating news was you’d never have all the Pokémon in one place. The big claim was about balance and gameplay, but if they went through and already balanced out these other older Pokémon, they could literally do ANY of them. And they can’t possibly call “system limitations”, given the power of the Switch and the already stated “cloud storage” function of “Home”—they’re doing this for a reason they’re not revealing to the public and it’s worrisome for the future of the franchise.

Which leads me back to them focusing more on co-op gameplay and multi-player angles. Clearly they’re working to the MMORPG ideal, than single-player gameplay.

Honestly, I’d rather have Mega Evolutions over this Dynamax system any day......... :/

It's looking to be kind of disappointing... but I'm not as upset about the lack of National Dex as most other people. I'm remaining hopeful, and am still excited for the games because I love Grookey. XD

I feel more and more like they're trying to move in the MMORPG direction, which may leave a bunch of older fans out in the cold. I do honestly hope that with them saying "balance" and technical stuff.......they will make it so it's better battling wild Pokemon and if you use those "low hit" attacks you won't miraculously KO something you're trying to catch--because False Swipe will never work on a Ghost-Pokemon (unless you go through the combo set up of using other moves first for a Normal move to hit a Ghost! XD). There's nothing more tragic than being super-careful on catching a Legendary Pokemon using the tiniest moves possible and then that one hit goes "critical" and KOs all your hard work! XD

I also hope this means they're actually doing a story and not slapping something together to make all their multi-player mini-games and such work. I think that might hit some end of the franchise really hard, too--as Pokemon has always been a primarily solo game, until you go into battle with others (or trade). They can show us all the lovely graphical screenshots they want, but a pretty-looking game will suffer hard if there's no good story to go along with it.

A lot of good points! Yeah, I relate to the struggle of accidentally KOing something you really wanted to catch XD

        • Link

I’ve done that so many times I can’t even say! It’s always a critical hit when you DON’T WANT IT! XD

I'm pretty bummed out by the lack of a national dex, to be honest ;; i don't know if i'll be able to bring in my original sapphire starter blaziken and that really disappoints me. i'll probably still get it, but i'm hesitant to move my pokemon up to home right now

Without a true "National Dex"--it makes me wonder what the point of "Home" actually is--unless it's to set up for the next game AFTER Sword/Shield. XD

There are ones I'd love to bring up from older games, but if they're not in Galar's PokeDex, then I can't and the full compliment of what Pokemon are in Galar has yet to be revealed. Conversely, does this mean all 800-ish Pokemon in the Galar PokeDex CAN be caught between the two games or are they still relying on you filling that up via Go/Let's Go? I mean, besides Meltan, obviously...............
