The Secret Life of Pets 2 - movie review by JohnStripedfur

My opinion on Illumination as a whole is that it's a animation studio that doesn't want to make great movies. They want to make generic, mediocre, family friendly movies. And so far, they're pretty much the most successful animated studios that have not made a single failure either critically and (mostly) financially. And that to me is sad because Illumination has the means to make great animated movies, but they rather do them at a bare minimum. This goes for this movie as well as the first one. The first one was ok. I did like the idea, but the plot was a mixture of all three Toy Story movies.

The second is a little bit better. The movie itself is what I feel the first one should've been. Multiple stories with multiple characters. The idea of what pets would do while their owners are away. But, that's where it shows the weakness. It feels very episodic. Like the movie should've been made into a animated series where each episode is about one pet doing their own separate adventure. And that's pretty much why this movie is very mediocre. Much like all of their movies in their library.

Overall, if you liked the first one. You would like this one as well.
