Pokemon Sword/Shield revelation--your thoughts? by keirajo

While I still have yet to look at everything (I had Jury Duty yesterday and, thus, limited internet time and was too tired to look at anything after the day was done).............I'd like to have other fans weigh in on what they think of the reveals.

From my last journal: They're still making us wait until that June date for the "Sword/Shield" announcement, but let me tell you right now--I guarantee we'll see the Legendaries revealed and probably the "evil organization" that will plague the new region. If they reveal anything else besides that--it could be the next evolution for the Starters or the first few Pokemon you'll meet on your journey (which are usually a Bug, a Bird or a Rodent of some sort).

I was right about the Legendaries being revealed, wasn't I? XD I didn't look too closely, but they revealed at least brief visuals of the next evolution of the Starters, didn't they? I literally scanned the news in like 2 minutes, so, yeah, I don't know everything that was revealed yesterday, yet. I hope to look it all up when I get off of work tonight.

I love Wolves and stuff and should be more excited that both Legendaries are Wolves, but..........um, they look like modified Lycanrocs. scratches head

And there's definitely "Pokemon Go" influences in it with the Raid Battles and such. I look to see more of the cellphone game's influences in this one, given they revealed the first new Pokemon in it (Meltan)--it's basically they want the games to hype each other up and get people who aren't playing one, to play the other........especially as there will be the "Pokemon Home" app coming out to link them all.

So, share your thoughts with me and everyone else at how you feel on what's been revealed! :D

They didn't reveal anything related to the starter's evolutions yet sadly. interestingly enough they revealed something other than the standard bird/rodent set. Technically there was a bird, but its certainly not the starter bird for sure. Looks like they decided to go with animals that the England and such areas would be known to have first. They did have Scorbunny having a fightning move, though. Gosh frikken darn, the fandom's gonna blow up with buff scorbunny ffanart after they stop putting the shield pokemon as a dog with a cone on its head.

ALthough I'm not pleased with Dynamax, I am also pleased that I'll be able to have a Gigantic Tyranitar in battle at the same time. I'm guessing its reference from the first series of the anime about the gigantic pokemon? I was glad to see pokemon in the overworld walking in the wild areas. The game environment kinda looks like pokemon testing waters for an mmo. I don't think its going to be one, more of a test for one. But that's how I feel with the open world in wild areas, and how the sheep, turtle, and plant they revealed totally look like monsters you would grind for materials like herbs and cloth. XD

I'm not excited for the game one bit yet. I like the games for parts other than Battle. I like that darn random adventuring and weird side stuff like huts and digging. Still excited for the pokemon because their first reveals I find very amusing. I'm hoping for a pretty nice evolution for the Sheep. I think both legendaries are niether bad or good in design. Their design feel is very Suicune, Raikou, Entei like and I appreciate that part of them. Looks like next big reveal like this will be the third legendary and adversary from how that ended.

Whispers to self: Now give me a Mystery Dungeon of it XD

I've had a big lack of sleep lately and only looked briefly. I looked at more details a little while ago. It was the way they put a couple of those new reveals side-by-side in the frame that made me think starters! XD I blame lack of sleep and the brain-draining event of Jury Duty! XD I did find it interesting that we've already seen part of (it may not be finalized) an evolution chain with the new Grass-type, though--we rarely get reveals of an evolution chain all at one time! I suppose GameFreak is of the mind--"Why stop doing Fire/Fighting?" at this point............... wry laugh

The Dynamax function is definitely something that reminds me of all I've read of Raid Battles for "Go" combined with the deity forms of the island Pokemon--erk, it's been so long since I played Sun or Moon or whatever that I don't remember. Trials? Was that what they were called? I feel like the games've been working towards an MMO format since X/Y, when they started letting you play around with Trainer design.........but given how much wild emotions you get for an open world MMO from users, I feel GameFreak's gotta build up to it slowly. Look at "Final Fantasy XV"--I know there are lovers and there are haters. The standard RPG gamers absolutely hate it, because of the MMO feel and world exploration basics--those who've played FFOnline probably have more of a tolerance and acceptance of it. Frankly...........I love it so much, I've never finished the story mode--I love the exploring and doing quests and the road trip aspect of it. XD But I'm more of an active and thoughtful battler anyways..........I fall asleep during menu-based RPGs like the classic FF stuff. chuckle

I do hope we'll get more real story to this game, instead of the feel of a generic story in X/Y/Sun/Moon/USun/UMoon--I understand you want to make the experience for new players, so you simplify the story and the battling and all that. But it drives away the fanbase that've supported you for years, who want an epic story and who want to have that challenge of type-trumping in battle. I really feel like we need to get GameFreak to give us a Pokemon game that's for us "oldtimers" of the series. I'll be expectant to see what we get next for news or Pokemon reveals of this game. It's interesting that we've revealed the Champion right away--so will we have an assisting Champion (ala Lance or Steven) throughout the story mode?

I hope there'll be a new Mystery Dungeon game too, someday. :)

I'm kind of "meh" about the Pokémon-getting-big mechanic, forgot what it's called. I thought Mega Evolution was a REALLY neat addition and wish they continued that in the games that came after Kalos, so I'm a little bitter when things like Z-Moves and now this kind of replace the Mega Evolution.

    The legendaries are pretty cool!

I LOVE Wooloo! I think pretty much everyone does XD

    • Link

I've heard Wooloo is now the undeniable star of the internet--and the new games will probably sell more copies because of it! XD

I think GameFreak has reached too far nowadays--they've lost everything that made Pokemon good. I really wish they'd just go back to a basic Pokemon game sometimes. It's kinda.............I wish they'd pick up on how "new things every game" destroyed the "Sonic" game franchise (and hey, we're going to get a movie to wreck it even more!). Fans loved the Pokemon games for building their teams, finding their favorite Pokemon and enjoying the journey--they don't need the gimmicks of customizing a trainer or altering Pokemon beyond what they should be.

      • Link

        True!

I sort of disagree... I was feeling kind of bored of the Pokémon formulaic games after Black and White, so the changes they implemented in X/Y and Sun/Moon felt like a breath of fresh air. But I get what you're saying.

The thing that annoyed me the most was that I and so many other people loved having our Pokémon follow the trainer in the Gold/Silver games and remakes, and wanted that back. That's what I loved about Let's Go, and I hope they continue that in Sword/Shield.

I think the following concept is something everyone likes--and it makes me wonder why they haven't "made it a thing" since HG/SS came out! To me, it also felt like a way to increase friendship--and for some evolutions, that's a necessity!

As fans, we don't really get much say in the direction of the franchise--in the end, we just have to decide whether we want to buy them or not, right? So we either buy and play or don't. :)

          • Link

Yeah, it would have made so much sense to include it for that reason!

            Very true :)

            • Link

There's supposed to be more news coming out today--it'll be interesting to see what that is. The next evolution of Starters maybe, or the "evil organization"?

I guess we'll have to wait and see. :)

    Mehhhh

I Don’t Like The Legendaries, They Look Generic. And They Both Kind Of Look Like One Another

I Like The Dynamax Concept, But It Seems Like More Of A Gimmick Than A New Mechanic. Can’t See How It’ll Be Used Without It Becoming A Chore Or How It’ll Tie Into The Plot. Mega Evolution Was An Awesome Addition And Sadly Just Forgotten

    All I Can Say Is

Wooloo Is Our Lord And Savior :v ❤️

They look like modified Lycanroc to me. Lycanroc with fancy clothing and weapons. XD

I'm sure it's just a gimmick, like the Totem Pokemon of Sun/Moon.........trying to find a way to make the game multi-player that doesn't rely on trades and battles. As Uluri said, it feels like we're working towards an MMO for the franchise. I mean, the Dynamax system is very "Monster Hunter".............

It seems everyone loves the little fluff-ball. XD

I'm not excited in the least bit for Sword and Shield. Dynamax seems cool, but the pokemon designs themselves have been pretty bad except for Wooloo and Corviknight imo. In every generation before Sword/Shield, there has always been at least one starter I like. Now, I don't like any of them. I hate saying this, but I think it's time for Pokemon to stop making new generations. They're running out of ideas and have been for a while. I watched the trailer because I was curious what the legends look like, very disappointed. They could have done better than a dog holding a sword in it's mouth. If they really wanted to go the dogs route, they could have done anthro dog knights. Still would have been nice to see the legends be based on less popular species, there are already sooo many dog Pokemon.

I'm of the mind that I'd love to see a Pokemon game go back to basics--you're a Trainer and you're going to collect Pokemon. You might trade with your friends or battle online, but it's basically you on your journey. I think moving towards "multi-player" concepts will change the franchise forever, but maybe not really in a good way. They could do something and create 150 new Pokemon (not remaking Kanto for the billionth time) with a new journey--but go back to where all the things original players loved and can be passed on to new generations. We don't need gimmicks--and we don't always need a third Legendary thrown in there............and there's no real need to customize the Trainer (this is the gimmick purely showing their desire to go online with everything).

Oddly, we're not hearing much in the way of a story either. So.........I wonder if we're going to get an ambling game again, with no real direction--or, if as Kilo and I have discussed by e-mails, they're going to download the story content as DLC now that they're on a platform that can easily do so. hmmmm

Agree with you all the way. Pokemon's focus should be the trainer on their journey, heavy emphasis on multiplayer concepts will take away from that and make people like Pokemon only for the competitive aspects. I don't wanna see Pokemon take a Battle Royale approach, that'll ruin everything. I agree with you, Pokemon needs to go back to it's roots. All-new Pokemon, legendary duos instead of trios, focus on the game's story instead of multiplayer features. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum was great, little emphasis on the multiplayer aspect but there was still plenty to do post-storyline. Catch all the post-story legendaries, shiny hunt with the Pokeradar, work on completing the Pokedex, try to make the perfect contest Pokemon. I remember spending hours messing around in the underground all by myself. OR/AS put a lot of emphasis on multiplayer features, I wanna see Pokemon go back to mainly single-player things that can keep us occupied. Talking about Diamond/Pearl is making me wanna break out the copy of Pearl I barely ever touched and start playing it, lol.

If they make the story content a DLC, I'm gonna be pretty upset. A pay-to-access DLC, that will guarantee I never buy a new Pokemon game again. Not even Sinnoh remakes if they ever do it. The only game I would even consider buying is a sequel to Pokemon XD, but I'm pretty certain they're never going to make one.

I think if they want to do a multiplayer-focused game—that’s what we should have a new “Stadium” game for. If they wanted to do more than just battles, they could add some multiplayer mini-game elements like the Mario Kart games. GameFreak should leave the main series alone for single players with multiplayer options.

I still love D/P/Pt—I think I replayed Platinum 3 times! I liked the Torn World part of getting to Giratina.......Platinum made the third Legendary an actual story experience! And the underground was always so much fun!!! :D

Yeah, I worry about them moving to extra story content via DLC—I mean, what if the made the Elite Four/Champion challenge DLC??? There are just many bad ways online content can change Pokémon gameplay........ :<
