Mary Poppins Returns - movie review by JohnStripedfur

For as long as I can remember, I've been a big fan of the movie Mary Poppins. I consider the flick to be one of the best, if not THE best, Disney movie overall. If there's one word to describe it, it's Magical. Everytime I watch it, I always get a big smile on my face. I loved everything on the movie, The acting, the visuals, the dancing, the songs, and the characters. It's a near perfect family musical by Disney. So, when I heard they're going to make a sequel a couple years ago, my first thought was, "Why?" Why make a sequel to a perfect movie so many years ago? If they really want to make a sequel, they should've done it long ago. But, since Hollywood has realized that nostalgia is profitable, it is what it is. So, now the question is, will this movie recapture the magic the original did so long ago or will it be just another nostalgia cash grab.

This movie is pretty magical in it's own way. The visuals are fantastic, the songs were pretty good, and the characters are memorable in their own way. I like how that it's different and yet familiar at the same time. Emily Blunt did a fantastic job as Mary Poppins. Even though she's no Julie Andrews, she held her own. Glad they picked someone who can play the role very well.

If there's a couple criticisms for this movie it's this. It feels so much like the original. Which is why I don't think the sequel is as great or as magical as the original. There are a lot of scenes that felt familiar. Like there's a Step in Time scene, a Jolly Holiday scene, a Feed the Birds scene, a Spoonful of Sugar scene, and a Let's Go Fly a Kite scene. Which I think it's inevitable regardless.

Overall, it may not recapture the magic like the original. It's a worth sequel to the ultimate Disney classic. If you're a fan of the original or an ordinary Disney fan. You will love this movie.
