On fan art by MapleSmoke

When I think about it, I'm less interested in doing fan art now.

I used to enjoy making it because it was my way of saying I liked this pokemon, anime character, game, tv show, book etc. Sometimes it's the character design, or the personality of the character appeals to me. My fan work is otherwise not very meaningful, which is ok. But I want to do more original work, even though it'll get less attention.

Part of it is that I don't want to become known as someone who mainly does fan art. I've felt uncomfortable lately about riding on the coattails of popular media, when it comes to people enjoying or noticing my stuff. Also, I want to express things or emotions that aren't always beautiful or cute. My creativity seems more constrained when it comes to fan art than when I simply do my own thing.

I won't stop drawing fan art entirely, but I'll post that stuff less frequently.

The pressure is understandable, the older I became the less interesting fanart subjects were. I don't want art sites with one main theme/subject sucking up 90% of the posted work.
