Fursuit Head Edits by Volt Siano

Just wanted to say this now, real quick and while I'm thinking about it ('cause I've been putting it off/forgetting to mention it these past several days), that I have made further edits to my fursuit head. Whereas it used to be one continuous bucket of foam all the way 'round my head, I've now trimmed off some of the unnecessary foam in the back (like the foam structure on the back of this head). Furthermore, I've sewn the neck flap together in the back, instead of leaving it as two independant pieces of fabric.
Ideally, these edits will allow the fur to lay flatter against my neck, and also help it stay tucked beneath the collar of my shirt. You can see in my Valentine's Day video that the neck flap often stuck out in the back, due to it being pulled away from my head by the foam, and possibly due to the smaller, separated flaps being easier to move than a large, singular flap would be. After a few tests, the makeover seems to have worked, but a minute-long head movement test isn't exactly a multi-hour fursuit outing; Lord willing, I'll get a good field test tomorrow... well, today, rather....
I'm tired. G'night!

Sounds like that'll make things a little better! I was curious why the neck flap was split; I just figured it was for ventilation or something. As for the foam, less is always good (It holds heat like crazy!)

I think I had the neck split because it wasn't laying properly with the excess foam. But now both problems are fixed.
You say foam holds heat. Out of curiosity, do you speak from experience?

I've never had my own suit, but I got to try on a headpiece for one my ex was making. I only had it on for a few minutes, and it was really toasty.

I also had this chair with a thick foam seat, it it would always get uncomfortably warm. I'm rid of it now, t hank goodness.

    That's awesome!

Touching on what MistingWolf brought up, I can speak from experience, you definitely want more ventilation than just the eyes and mouth if you're making a foam head. Xeno is all foam and she gets pretty hot quick, it's even worse now that I've sewn her mouth completely shut. It helps that her eyes are big and all buckram, but my breath still makes things really hot and really humid; I need to undo the stitching and open her mouth a little bit so I have that air vent back.

Heat isn't the only thing to worry about. Fursuit heads with really bad ventilation are a CO2 poisoning risk, another highly compelling reason to make sure you have as much ventilation as you're able to.

Well, I hardly think something around the opposite end of my head from my mouth is gonna' help with CO2, but I understand what you're getting at. X]

Yeah, Voltaire started off with a closed mouth, and I soon realized the error in such a design. Even with his now open jaw, I still breath in hot air if I don't move around enough and get air circulating in from outside.

Why'd you sew the mouth shut?

        That's true. rip

The jaw was supposed to move, but it doesn't work as I intended and sewed it shut since it hung open and flapped around when I moved. It looked really tacky, and waaay to close to Foxy from FNAF for my comfort.

Ah. Yeeeeeah, not exactly a friendly vibe.
