Revisiting Commission Ideas/End of Seasonal Employment by BeakyBeast

Alright, so I had taken a seasonal job earlier in December, and now my time as a cashier is up as of yesterday evening. Aside from the obvious meaning, in that I am now unemployed again, it also means that my ability to take commissions will be opened up again for more than just three days out of the week. After my current attempt at getting sketch commissions in has ended, I will be open again for larger projects should clients want to order them.

However! This opening will be temporary. College classes begin next week, and once I get an idea of how the syllabus, worload and schedule look for this semester, I will be job hunting again. While I appreciate every order and client I get from this site, what I do get is not frequent or substantial enough to consider making it a full time means of income. So, it will be regulated to a on-the-side activity that I do more for enjoyment/extra money on the side instead of wracking my brain trying to run a freelance job that really isn't that profitable.

That said, I am revisiting a few different commission ideas once I get a few personal projects out of the way:

*Speed Paints
*Character Design
*Traditional Commissions
*Con Badges
*Ink Sketches

Here are some rough explanations about these:

Speed Paints:

Pretty much I had been considering that once I get confident with these, I would offer them as a commission tier on par with sketches. Since I tend to work fast, a client would pay for no more than 3 hours worth of work. They would be digital, like the rest of the commissions I offer thus far. There would be no bust, headshot, or fullbody prices like the rest of what I offer, it would be a flat rate for whatever I could get done within those three hours.

Character Design:

I've been dabbling on this since there are people who do not have refs for their characters, or what they offer in terms of a text description is heinously barebones because they don't know how to describe their character.

I would like to clarify right now that these would not be refsheets or adoptables! That would be a whole different tier I would need to consider and price accordingly.

These would be one-on-one design projects, where I would work with the client to help visualize their character. There would be a lot of sketches, a lot of discussion, and at the end of it, hopefully a character that the client is happy with. I do like having a quotable solid rate down for these, so more than likely they will be priced based on how many drafts (sketches) the client would want. My earlier idea regarding also having the option for a cell shade of the finished character has been scrapped currently, as I am aware that most of the clients I get tend to gravitate more towards sketches instead of the more refined pieces I offer for paid work.

Traditional Commissions:

I've been thinking about this one too for a while, but I've never been certain how to exactly go about it. What resources I have are pretty limited to pencils and sharpie pens. Given blending them is a nightmare, I would be offering only black and white commissions for this type. They would also cost more since I would be using actual physical resources that will need replenishing. Shipping would be added as an additional cost if clients want the original, but only within the United States since international shipping rates are a nightmare.

Con Badges:

Sort of an option that I had been considering, but also unable to really wrap my head around getting past certain hurdles regarding them. The big one in this case is lamination, since many do like having their badges laminated and pre-clipped. I do not have a laminating machine, though acquiring one is a little simpler than I had initially believed since costs have gone down and the machines are conveniently small. Shipping would be covered in the cost and likely would be treated the same way I would for traditional commissions.

I would probably offer options for both traditional and digital media when it comes to con badges.

Ink Sketches:

I got thinking about these after I had completed inktober last year. Ink sketches would be very quick, a little messy, but a more affordable version of my black and white inks tier commissions. They of course would not be colored, and would take around 3 hours to complete depending on the content, equating to about 45.00 USD. Depending, Busts and Headshots may cost less than Fullbodies due to taking less time to complete. I would lump busts and headshots together in the 2 hour mark, making them 30.00 USD.

That said, what do you all think of these ideas? Would they be something you would be interested in or should they be completely scrapped? I know my watchers are not really fond of putting their two cents in when it regards my journals and I'm pretty certain no one really reads them, but I'll still give an offer for input regardless. I'd like to know what you all think of these ideas at some point or another.
