Well, that just sucked... by GallowsGryph

So... I've been trying to get around to doing things with my game dev and writing stuff. I really want to work (before it drives me nuts from sleep deprivation)... But life hasn't exactly been cooperating with me.

I'm still getting a lot of distractions, and my problem is that I need momentum when I'm working. But I tend to get distracted by people in meatspace, and I can't just go into a room and lock the door. My mate Sildrae and I share a room. And I had a privacy screen, but 1) it was completely ineffective outside of Sildrae (everyone else ignored it), and 2) it became a bedbug nest.

The bedbugs are (hopefully) gone at least, but yeah...

Now I've also got other problems. My Windows 7 laptop decided that the IGP wouldn't work, though basic 2D video was just fine. It's just 3D acceleration. However, I had a backup: a Dell XPS 410 given to me by Sildrae. Core2Quad, 8GB of PC2-5300, but he needed the more powerful PSU for his system, so I'm kinda running on a GeForce 7600GT (which can't even support OBS Studio) and keeping things thin on power.

Since I can't stream or record with it (which I was planning to do) I had another backup: my Acer Aspire 5 series laptop. Core i5, 12GB of PC4-19200, can run most games fairly well with its Intel IGP... But it's running Windows 10, and doesn't support anything else thanks to secureboot and a trusted computing module. I have had nothing but pure unadultered HELL with Windows 10, and tonight was no different.

I was working on getting something set up, and suddenly the laptop rebooted. I completely disabled Windows Update, so I knew it wasn't that. And when it came back up, it just wouldn't go to the login screen. So, I refreshed the laptop...

Now, a bit of bloatware has thrashed the HDD and was running the system into the ground, so I'm having to use my Win7 desktop to get a USB installer set up for the damned thing. This wouldn't have happened if Microsoft hadn't removed disk imaging from the native backup system (something Windows 10 has), but... yeah. So now I'm dealing with that.

At this point, I might just try and get my desktop upgraded with a more powerful PSU, a newer GPU, and a USB3 card for my external drive (and other things). You can see what I'm getting here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/1BPIT2AOVNBUB

I'll get a newer system later. Right now, I just want a working system that I can use to work on things, stream and record video, and play very basic games and Second Life. And something that's not running Windows 10. >..>

Well, that just sucked...
