Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - movie review by JohnStripedfur

Before I talk about the 5th movie of the franchise, I'll talk about what I think of the franchise as a whole. I really like the first three, but the fourth I felt was a huge misstep.

When Disney announced more than a decade ago they're making a pirate movie and it's based on one of their most treasured attractions in their theme parks. I thought it was a good idea. They could play around with it and there's no way they could mess up a pirate movie. Of course, pirate movies were notoriously box office bombs. There was a reason why Hollywood hasn't made so many of them. The last one was Cutthroat Island back in the mid-1990's and even though I actually enjoyed that movie, it was a huge flop. When Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl came out in the summer of 2003, I was just blown away. I went to see it almost five times at that summer. Was utterly surprised on how good it was. When Dead Man's Chest came out a few years later, I wasn't so sure about it. And then I was wrong. I liked it just as much as the first one. Then At World's End came out a year later and I liked it just as much. Thought it was a great way to end a good trilogy. But then there was At Stranger Tides and that's when they took a huge misstep. So, when the fifth was announced, I was also worried, but hoping that it'll be better than the last one.

And Dead Men tell no Tales is......slightly better than the last one. Which isn't saying much. I did enjoyed some of the moments, but I was distracted on some of the continuity errors it has in it. I felt the franchise has lost it's flavor that made the franchise so great in the first place and this one shows it. It's clear Disney doesn't know what else to do with the franchise anymore. It's pretty much the same type of formula that made the first three so successful. But, since they made so much money, Disney thought that's the only way to keep the franchise going. If this one will make enough money during its run and they decide to make a sixth one. I just hope they'll do something different with it.

Overall, if you're a fan of the Pirates franchise, you'll find this ok.
