$3 per page for a story is too much!? by LavaBat

I was contacted by someone on DA about a story commission.

I usually aim for 3500 words, or about 6 pages per story. I ended up deciding that $3 per page was about right for the effort required. That's $3 per word page with a narrow border.

I was told that this was "too much"

...Not sure what to think of this... I personally think $3 per page is a bargain!

Dude, people are pretty damn shitty to writers. A page of writing is usually worth about $10 in my book.

Interesting. One guy who commented on FA about this suggested 1 cent per word - which would make a 3500 word story $35. While that's half of what you are suggesting, it's a lot more than I am asking at the moment.

      Perhaps I am undercharging?

        I'd say so.

Yeah, the standard for non-professionals seems to be 1 cent a word - the industry standard for professional writers and proof readers is 4-5 cents a word. Either way, the guy from DA had nothing to complain about!

Page is too ambiguous as there's no easy way to determine how much content is actually on a page. Much better to calculate by word count. So $18 for $3500 words is about half a penny per word which is really, really, really CHEAP.

You should definitely charge far more than that

Most people are saying that a cent a word is the standard - so my usual 3500 length story would be $35.
