A NaNo Commitment For Myself by Moved Accounts...

Wowee, is November almost here? It feels like it's already passed, probably because everyone overhyped Halloween and it now feels like it's over, even though it's only the 27th. Anyway, I'm getting ready to do NaNoWriMo again, shooting to make up a script for a comic featuring Keri, Cambriel, and all those other weird things I've been coming up with recently.

Since I hate myself too much to only write 2,000 words per day, I've been wanting to also commit to doing a colored sketch corresponding to the work I did that day - that is to say, doing 30 conceptual illustrations to complement my developing story. I'll definitely be posting the sketches here, and will be looking out for a place to post the writing I do for feedback purposes.

So, the sketches themselves will be, as I said, full-color. I'm terrible with coloring right now and definitely need the practice. The pressure of doing them alongside writing and other work will also help me learn to get work done in a more timely manner, as I currently work very, very slowly. And, of course, getting a feel for storytelling art will definitely help me get to the point where I feel comfortable illustrating an entire graphic novel.

Now, naturally, the drawings will be extremely spoiler-y. I don't really care, since I don't think anyone else does either. I mean, it's not like many people are gonna see them, right? Ha... ha...

But seriously, though. I'm hoping that sketches will be a good way to draw in some attention from people who are willing to give me good, honest feedback on the writing - the very essence of the project - so that I can convey the most compelling and interesting story I'm capable of.

So, anyway, if anyone else is doing NaNo this year, feel free to add me as a buddy! Like I said, I'm starving for discussion and feedback pertaining to storytelling, and am just as interested in hearing about your stories as what you think of mine. We will prove ourselves, in GLORIOUS writing!

I love his books! Making Comics and Understanding Comics are the books that really got me interested in comics as a medium, and convinced me to switch over from straight-up novel writing. I still thumb through my copies of those books when I'm in need of some good inspiration.

I envy you! I hope by some slim chance he shows up at my local Comicon to give a talk, because I would buy tickets just for that.

I mean, I'd buy tickets anyway because I love going, but still.

Oh shit I almost forgot there are a few short sunny days left before this hits the fan, I am kind of prepared and not due to my PC dying and never being able to connect to the internet. IKD all these sites asking for me to sign up are like stressful, I have way to many profiles

It's been on my mind since September. I've been preparing by jotting down a bunch of notes and posting to the NaNo forums, almost like practice for the real deal. I feel ready, but a little trembly to boot.

I hope you can get your PC fixed up and ready in time! I tried handwriting for a day last NaNo, and it was painful. The ability to type is a godsend we often take for granted.

For consideration: If I might draw your willing attention to a website called Kadenze and a (free) online course called "Comics: Art in Relationship", which I've taken and enjoyed. There won't be anything revelatory since you've read Scott McCloud but personally I found it to still be inspiring/motivating/cheering (and it got a few comics out of me) and therefore worth the time.

I'll be sure to check that out! I'm very fascinated by the medium of comics, and how I could utilize the format's structure to really enhance my storytelling.
