To take the head off or not to take the head off? by JohnStripedfur

That is the question of the day.

Especially on twitter.

Now, I have no idea how this subject came to be, but from what I researched. At some con, there appears to be a growing number of fursuiters who just take their heads off anywhere and not in a fursuit lounge. And that just spurt out the huge debate on the furry twitterverse about if it's ok to take the head off in public or not to.

Well, here's my two cents about it.

I'm a firm believer in keeping your head on in public while performing. Whether you do it for an event or at some meet or convention. If they have a place for you to rest and take the head off from public viewing use it.

BUT, I do think there are some exceptions.

First and foremost. I consider myself a veteran in terms of fursuiting. Even though I hadn't fursuited in 3 years due to life and not being able to go to a nearest convention, but I do remember the aspects of fursuit performances and such. I've fursuited mostly around anime conventions since I use to live in areas where the prominent fandom is anime and that has the most conventions. There is a different between fursuiting in anime conventions vs. fursuiting in furry conventions, but that's not the topic of this conversation.

Now, furry conventions obviously have fursuit lounges where fursuiters can go inside, cool off, and take heads off without the worry of possibly ruining the magic. Most have maps that point out where the nearest one is and a fursuiter can easily get to it.

Anime conventions obviously does not have those types of facilities. And neither does a furmeet. So, one has to improvise. You either get to your car or just simply find someplace to rest and take your head off there. Which I had done. Now, I know that may sound like I just did the unbreakable rule, but sometimes you just gotta do it. Because if you feel overheated and if there isn't a safe cooling place to go to, then you just have to take your head off at some point and rest. While your buddies get you some water. Believe me, I've been there and it's something that I truly don't want to do, but if you're at a place where they don't have places for suiters to go to. Then, you just have to grin and bear it because cooling off is more important than ruining the magic.

Now, I can understand why there are people who are deadest against it. Because some of them I know use to or currently work for Disney as character performers. Mostly as the "head" characters. Those who wear costume heads. I use to be an employee at Walt Disney World and I've met a few character performers there. I can understand their commitment for performing and not ruining the magic. Because beating the hot Orlando sun of 90 degree weather is all worth it if a child or a fan is happy to see an actual Disney character in real life. That's what we former and current cast members use to call a "Disney Moment".

Now, most of the fursuiters out there are definitely not Disney cast members or professional mascots or even costume performers for hire. Most of them, like me, are just costumers who do it for fun. I can understand if they feel like taking their head off in terms of heat exhaustion or just simply want to converse to somebody without them hearing nothing but mumbles out of the head.

I think that as a whole. If you don't want to take your head off in public for fear of ruining the magic due to your professionalism or belief. You can do that. Just remember the consequences. But, if you treat fursuting as part of the fun and want to take your head off every once in a while. Then, try to understand why people might not like that. To both sides of this. Remember, this is all for fun and just have fun while you are there.

That's all I'll say about this.
