Ghostbusters (2016) - review by JohnStripedfur

Well.......I just saw it....

and....

....it's not a very bad movie.

But....

...it's not good either.

It was just all over the place. Especially the humor. It's the type of humor you would expect most comedy movies these days have. It's sarcastic humor with lots of ad libs. And it got annoying really quick. I know the original is a comedy by classification of the genre, but the humor there is more organic and it's not down our throats and just jabs at you like the reboot did. It focuses more on the story and the flow of the characters and the humor just comes in naturally. While this reboot just keeps hitting you with joke after joke after joke. Granted some of the scenes were pretty funny, but I just wished they toned down the humor a lot more.

Not to mention that it's not really focused all that much. At times it was trying to be it's own thing, but keeps halting itself to pay homage to the original with cameos from the original cast along with nods of the original. I do like a good cameo from time to time and a nod or two is fine, but they put in way too much. I guess they were trying to do a brand new Ghostbuster movie while the studios want them to keep putting homages in it just to appease the old fans.

The cast is actually pretty good, but....I don't like the characters themselves. They sometimes get really annoying real quick, but then turned around to make them relatable. But, it felt more like a cartoon than a live action movie. The only character I like is Pattie, played by Leslie Jones. She's extremely funny in this movie and I do like the character. Very relatable and they choose the right comedic actor to pull it off. The villain on the other hand. Very one note. And very typical this day in age if you know what I mean.

Though, the special effects were phenomenal. It is an upgrade from the original, even though the original still holds up with most of it. Especially around the 3rd Act, which was a ton of fun and badass. I've always wanted to see a 3rd Act of a Ghostbuster movie like that in a long while and I'm glad they did that. And the 3D was amazing. If you can afford the extra cost of 3D, do it. It's worth it. One of the best usage of 3D I've seen in a movie for a long while.

Overall, it's enjoyable, but it looked to be it could've been much better. If they toned down the humor, the homage, and do a few tweaks of the characters. It would've definitely be a better movie. Though, the theater experience wasn't all that great. Especially when there was a ground of 13 year old girls sitting behind me who kept talking to each other giggled throughout the film. I tried to shush them, but they giggled and kept on talking. Ugh.

Anyways, the movie itself was not a bad movie at all. But, it's not good either. If you want to see it, go ahead. If you don't want to, then you could afford to wait till it's available for rent.
