Summer Break - Commission Tips by Ayanaki

I should have updated this since a couple of weeks ago but forgot. I'm on summer break now and have more time to draw and sketch. My commissions are still open and I'm actually considering posting a new type of commission; Comic pages!

I'm still working out the details for it such as panel limits and setting the price, which brought to mind how to develop pricing. So I thought I'd share a few pointers on what I've learned in my short time of selling commissions.

Tips from the Noc Loft

  • Time yourself
Time how long it takes you to complete stuff and then average it to help you develop a price chart
e.g. Currently it takes me 1.5 - 3.5 hours to complete a screenshot so I'm estimating a comic page would take anywhere between 3 - 6 hours to complete depending on the background, effects, characters, and number of panels.

  • Pricing
I price commissions based how long I think it takes for me to complete them.

(wage) x (hours worked) = price
Personally I don't think anyone should put the hourly wage at less than 8 dollars (USD) the hour. While drawing isn't heavy labor it still has it's worth.

  • Set Your Limits

Every one has a list of things they will or won't accept to commission for various reasons. But limit I'm talking about here is is about what your capabilities are. For example if you think you aren't good a backgrounds or that they take you too long it might be better not to do them. While practice is great it's very risky to use a commission to experiment with your skills because you'll end up putting too much extra work and hours into something you already set a price for.
(I am very guilty of doing this actually T.T)

Now I am no expert in commissions and these are just my own tips. I've been doing this for a little over a year now but these are things I have learned from other artists and as well as my own experience.
