Undertale - A Lack Of Toxicity by Another Gone Profile

WARNING: Some of the things I’ve written may be considered SPOILERS. So, if you haven’t played Undertale yet, I suggest you hold off on reading this until you do.

As many of us have already figured out, fandoms kill interest and birth spite. Almost all of us have multiple stories of being annoyed or even bullied by psychotic fantards over something as simple as not agreeing on a certain pairing. No matter how amazing a show or a game is, the online fandom is always a proverbial death trap. . . isn’t it?

Somehow, some way the game Undertale has all but completely avoided extreme hateful toxicity within it’s fandom. How did it manage? How is that possible? What makes it so different from Sonic The Hedgehog, My Little Pony, Invader Zim and Final Fantasy? Well, here’s my answer:

1 - Undertale rewards the player for being a good and kind person. On the flip side, it punishes them for being a violent asshole. The game and characters are judgmental in that particular aspect, but so endearing that we WANT to please them. We dare not hurt them because due to how well they’re written, we feel close to them. They’re monsters beautifully humanized.

2 - Toriel. Toriel is the perfect mother. She's a stereotype in the most romanticized way.
Tension and disconnection between mother and child is all too common. The amount of stress and mental issues (like depression and anxiety) that run rampant in this day and age adds immensely to the pain of that fact.
Toriel is a perfect digital embodiment of that loving, understanding parental figure you've needed you're whole life. And what's more, how many people act like angels in front of their mom? How many people will cave and even break down when the thought of mom finding out about something terrible they’ve done comes to mind? What would Toriel say to you if you ruined something so wonderful for another person? Especially maliciously? How hurt and/or disappointed would she be?

3 - Tobyfox worked with Hussie (creator of Homestuck). Hussie actually stands up to douche bag fans and punishes them. Cyber bullies can not get away with abusing fellow fans and bringing down Homestuck the way they used to anymore. Many Homestuck fans are also Undertale fans after all. (This one's just a wild theory, but still).

And there you have it.
Don’t get me wrong, Undertale’s not perfect. After all, every fandom has it’s selfish, hateful, obsessive losers. This one just happens to have them as a minority - and now you know why.
