TL,DR: This game would be great except that the controls totally suck and nintendo needs to give us a patch that allows them to be customized. Now, for specifics, here we go...

Holy shit man, these controls, these controls man...they tried SO HARD to replicate the greatness of Star Fox 64 in every way but did they ever BOTCH the control scheme. We are forced to aim the ship's lasers with the motion controls, the FUCKING MOTION CONTROLS! I heard people complain about them, but HOLY CRAP they render this game virtually unplayable, if you move your hands the wrong way you can end up shooting BEHIND yourself like some jackass. So I find myself pressing Y to re-center the target sight almost as often as I'm pushing the fire button, plus maneuvering the ship is fucking stupid with 2 control sticks, especially since my brain has been programmed for the past 20 years to use the shoulder buttons for banking and barrel rolls. The worst part is that there is no option to change anything except for whether the motion controls are constantly on or only when you're actually firing. How the hell can you not have customizable controls?! There isn't even an option to switch to some kind of "classic mode" which would do away with the asinine motion gimmick and re-map the buttons to something that would feel more comfortable for veteran players. You know what? Aiming with the motion controls would make sense if you had the standard Wii remote, because at least it is shaped like a pointer and feels more intuitive for shooting games, this bullshit with the dual screen gameplay just causes me to crash a bunch when I forget which screen I'm supposed to be looking at, plus I NEVER EVER EVER played ANY game in cockpit view, I don't know how many people share that trait with me but I'm sure it's enough that it shouldn't be required. Oh yeah, my WiiU tablet controller also has a weak connection to the console so every couple seconds the stupid thing is pausing the game because of poor communication and that gets me shot or crashed a ridiculous amount of times (does anyone else have that problem, this thing is supposed to have a range of 30 feet but mine goes unstable at barely 5!)
