Yay collection features! by Rooth

I've been neglecting Weasyl for a while. A few things were keeping me away:
1. the site had become really slow
1. Chrome was having issues with it
1. No notifications for Collections
1. Adding to Collections was a pain

^ in the preview that list shows as a numbered list, very pretty. In the posted journal, it shows as raw 1. lines. Different parser for the preview than for the actual page? WHY?

That last one was a big one for me - I went from a paradigm of "re-post everything and link back to the artist" to "ask the artist to offer it as a collection, then explain how to do that" (to be fair, I only had to explain it about half the time). That was a big shift for me, but I tried, because I respect what it does for the artist. The re-post method requires the viewer/fan to recognize the art is not mine (which sometimes doesn't happen, despite titles and links and blatant credit), AND requires the viewer/fan to click the "original post" link, and then fave/comment on THAT post. That's asking a lot of the fan/viewer.

This week I've been poking around on Weasyl more, and now I discover two amazing things:

  • I get notified when someone faves a piece I collected
  • Requesting a piece for collection is easy as a button! HURRAY!
  • Do I get notified of comments on collections? No one ever comments, so I'm still waiting for confirmation on this one.

Sadly, the site is still slow. But not much worse than FurryNetwork (which also has issues with Chrome). I'm liking FurryNetwork a lot, particularly the draft submission thing, the incremental sync-with-FA thing, the crop tool, the folders, ... they both have their merits, and I'll try to keep them both in sync with FA. Eventually I'd like to get away from FA as my baseline, though, and use one of these others as a primary.

Using Weasyl as primary requires most of the artists I commission to be here and be active, so I can add my commissions to my collection and engage with the faves and commenters (itself requiring an active community to fave and comment!). Got my fingers crossed! :)

Yay collection features!

The big draw to Weasyl for me though is this is where the ClockworkCreature ClockworkCreature community is now that a lot of us aren't active on FA anymore. :3

      Noted! :)

My problem with here is it seems not enough people use it or keep up with what they post on FA. The problem i have with furrynetwork is I wish I could look at art of people I'm watching in a grid style similar to FA/Weasyl/DA. Maybe with a DA style AJAX style remove option so I can quickly pick through and remove items. That would be ideal. But instead I get this stream of art mixed in with a ton of other shit I don't want to see at the moment and it makes it hard to go through what people have posted.

You can filter out journals / posts / promotes / etc, and see just artwork. The list of things to the top right of the stream is all toggle-able (default on). As for viewing all your submissions in a grid pattern, you can!

To view your art feed in grid format:
      1. go to https://beta.furrynetwork.com
      1. click on 'What's new' on the left nav bar (this should be the default?)

      • You'll see all new stuff in whatever format you last looked at your stuff in (default: list)
      • At the top you'll see a Show: bar, with a list of four things, "Artwork" "Photos" "Stories" "multimedia", then a button that looks like a bar graph, and a button that looks like a grid. You can guess what those two do. :)
        1. By default, the four things are all lit up. If you click on one, say "Stories", it'll toggle stories out of the list.
      • Unfortunately, you can't 'clear' art out of your grid view. There's no 'x' button there yet. It's still in beta, tho, so if the request isn't already in for that feature, go to the 'support' button under your avatar and submit the request. They'll review it and update status on that request as it changes.

Yeah they have vastly improved the stream view. Hoping the grid gets the close boxes soon, I am keeping an eye on it in case it improves. Hopefully its not like weasyl which started out nice then seemed to enter a stage of arrested development.
