The Road Ahead - Projects of 2016 by KronoGarrett

With the basic work on Baragon done, I'm considering what I should tackle next this year. There are a wide range of projects, some of which I have supplies, knowledge, and tools for, others for which I'll have to do a bit of legwork. In any case, I'd like to ink and color some sketches from my backlog and do some artwork for myself and select members of my audience before I launch into another multiple-month production.

Sewing/Craft Projects:

First off, I need to buy my own sewing machine if I'm going to work on any of these projects. The local dealer (Barnes) just across the highway sells Brother, Janome, Baby Lock, and Juki machines, wheras the dealer next door (Akron Sewing) sells Elna units. Both shops have repair and training options, although I'm reasonably certain about basic machine operations now. I'd be looking to spend $350-$500 on a new or used machine (Barnes carries a wide selection of refurbished machines). What brand do you recommend?

If I'm doing more costume projects, I need to buy or subscribe to Stan Winston School courses for foam fabrication, bodysuits, and anatomy. Purchase versus subscription is the challenge, while I'm tempted to buy the courses to keep, I could just subscribe for a few months and watch the tutorials to see if I'm interested before committing to buy.

Giga-Godzilla Plush:
My Toy Vault Supersized Godzilla plush is looking pretty war-weary. I've had him since freshman year of college, he's gone many places and served as a convenient emotional support object/housepet substitute. The vinyl fabric on the claws has long since delaminated, and the felt elements are breaking down. I don't think he'll survive another wash, so I was thinking about dismantling the plushie and duplicating the pattern to make something larger. How much larger should I make the new one? (I'll do a bit of Photoshop Fu to explore this.)

Complete Baragon Suit:
Get an airbrushing kit and suitable paints, plus dimensional (puff) paint in the correct colors in order to detail Baragon for G-Fest. The neck drape could use another three inches or so along with another pair of backplates, things tended to become untucked when I was at ConCoction. I need to do this by July.

Tankaa Partial Suit:
Redo Tankaa's references, build a partial suit with balaclava head, gloves, and tail. Possibly a half-suit, since it can be worn with a t-shirt or my yukata and arm sleeves never quite worked out with Greatfang. Having a costume that doesn't require serious spotter support would be kind of nice. This is probably inevitable.

The Next Monster Suit:
What sort of monster costume should I build next? I was thinking about doing something from Monster Hunter, either Zinogre or Lagiacrus. The design will be semianthropomorphized for ease of operation. Something with less...stage presence than Baragon. Do you have any ideas? This suit would incorporate the results of the Stan Winston courses, along with some onboard electronics for the roar.

Electronics:

Adventures in Linux:
Kind of inevitable, really. Learn my way around Debian on the RPi 3, start planning for the homebuilt replacement for my 2011 iMac, and maybe develop useful ideas I could use somewhere else. These could be anything, from kaiju suit animatronics and biosensors to drone projects, but require advancement in other areas to realize (and possibly a proper workshop, which means looking for a condo or modifying my garage.) I'm not that strong of a programmer, so hardware-heavy projects are more likely. I have a Raspberry Pi 3 kit on order right now.

HipsterAMP:
An amplifier for hipsters. Retro-looking Bluetooth amplifiers for smartphones seem to be all the rage these days, but they all use Class D amps. I'm sure something better is possible. I have a Gakken battery tube amplifier kit with a neat flyback for generating B+, but it's a bit on the feeble side and not really portable. I'd have to break out the old electronics book, find suitable transformers, and probably blow up a few power transistors in the process of finessing this. Ideally, this would produce a 1W stereo amplifier based around 1T4 (preamp) and 3A4 (power amp) battery pentodes with 67V or 90V on the plates, with transformer-coupled output to some flavor of 4" full-range speaker. I'm not sure if I'd end up with a glorifed cake pan with tube sockets and transformers, or something more finished...

Remote Control Aircraft/Drones:
A good way to spend time with :devCrystalCircle:. I have a cheap quadcopter my uncle passed to me, an electric motor-glider somewhere that's in need of rebalancing (it might have been crushed last time I moved boxes around, though), and I'm tempted to get back into model rocketry if experiments with boost gliders are an option. FPV, HUD modules, and assorted other fun things are an option. It might potentially cross over with Adventures in Linux.

Miscellaneous:

Swoon.exe:
Self-explanatory, especially for those of you who remember Fort Francis. Yes, I really do need to put a little bit more elbow grease into relationships.

LASIK:
After my recent misadventure with contact lenses at ConCoction, I've decided that it's time to get my refractive error fixed. I can't wear my glasses in suit, I hate my contact lenses. I do like how I look with glasses, but I'll get used to it eventually. My folks have basically offered this as a birthday present. No, Dad can't do it himself.

Cycling:
I really should get another bike. While I'm not sure if cycle commuting to work is exactly the safest of ideas, it would give me more reasons to spend time outside and would simplify a few errands. This ranges between about half a kilobuck for a commuter or touring bike to about one and a half if I decide to buy a short wheelbase recumbent touring bike...

So many ideas, so little time.
