Anybody familiar with cat health? by Silenceartwork

I know the pictures are shitty but im worried. My cat has this red little hole on her body. Inspection proves its not a tick. The skin itself is a bit swollen and there appears to have been a little cut(its scabbed over). I put polysporin on it for now though she licks it off. ;–;

    Is she an indoor or outdoor cat? And are there other cats around? It look like it could a wound from a bite or scratch. But don't hold me on that.

      outdoor (Not my choice) and we have two other cats. Sometimes she gets into scraps with one of them but...she keeps licking the area too so i dont know if I should keep putting cream on it or not :c

    First off, don't use anything on your cat that's made for humans unless instructed to by a vet, as it could be dangerous for pets! As you've learned, at best it's useless (as they'll just lick it off), but at worst it could make them sick from ingesting it.

    That said, animals can get minor cuts and bumps just like people and generally you don't have to worry. If it's just a small wound, your cat will take care of it on her own. Slight swelling is probably just from the wound area being a bit irritated. I would say just keep an eye on your cat and the wound, check it every now and then to see if it's healing, and to make sure it's not getting infected. Infection would present the same way in a cat as it would a person--noticeable swelling, a pustule forming, development of a fever. It's rather unlikely though, but if it does happen, the best thing to do is to call your vet.

    Oh, also, about cat fevers... Some people believe a dry, warm nose indicates fever in a cat, but that's just not true. The only sure-fire way to tell if a cat has a fever is to take its temperature, but otherwise, fever presents the same symptoms in a cat as it does in people: shivering, rapid breathing, decreased appetite and/or thirst, lack of energy/lethargy, and decreased grooming.

    So basically, if your cat is eating, drinking, and grooming like normal, then she should be just fine!

      someone told me I could put the cream on her ;--; oh god I hope it wont give her a tummy ache.
      Thank you so much for taking the time to write down everything. Im keeping a firm eye on her and I measured the area so if it gets better I'll know. She ate her wet food lunch and she's been drinking so Ill continue to monitor. I might take her to the vet anyway? Just because she IS outdoor and its not my choice and im paranoid ;-;

    Okay, first off, don't give her any more polysporin, it'll cause stomach distress and really isn't good for cats. But wont damage her too bad. Like eating soap for us.

    I worked at a vet clinic for awhile, and have had cats almost all my life, so lemme see if I can help Note that I am not a Vet however and cannot give any actual medical advice. This is just a friend to friend basis

    First, get yourself an E-Collar for your kitty, that way she stops licking the wound. Here's an example of a comfy one compared to the hard plastics: http://www.amazon.com/KONG-Cloud-E-Collar-Cats-Small/dp/B0045Y1JGQ

    Here as well are some important facts about e-collars and cats: http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/elizabethan-collars-in-cats/92

    Then, get this, its cheap, its useful, it should heal up that wound: http://www.petsmart.com/cat/first-aid/21st-century-antimicrobial-cat-wound-spray-zid36-5192946/cat-36-catid-200044?_t=pfm%3Dcategory

    Now, for her wound, it sounds and somewhat looks just like a skin abscess NOT A VET THOUGH here's some general information on that:
    http://www.petful.com/pet-health/cat-abscess-treatment-tips/

    Its also got info on ways to help heal the issue

    Best of luck for your kitty <3

      Ill be heading out to get some medical work done on myself but instead of going where I planned Ill head to the other side of the city so I can stop off at petsmart instead ;--; thank you so much for all the help. Im hoping they have some collars to stop her from licking at the very least. Im very worried and cats being cats she is licking it. I checked her over for fleas, ticks, etc. None of that. She's clean from bugs at the very least. Its just wierd because I didnt see an injury yesterday? or at least I didnt see a red mark. it might have been there before and the fur just fell out or something

        Yes, usually they're small cuts that are just under the fur that eventually develop into the abcesses. Cats skin is very delicate (when I was a grooming assistant I had to be SUPER careful taking matts out of cats cause one slip with the blade and they'd skin ALIVE :C) so it very quickly can develop like that.

        Petsmart has the plastic e-collars, but that should be fine. If need be put a cloth around it, not too tight of course. Should ease any discomfort. If you have any other questions let me know~
