It's that day of the year again... by Marwan

The leap day.

Precisely 4 years ago, I did a journal entry: http://marwangreencritter.deviantart.com/journal/29th-of-February-287814510 My opinions regarding this day hasn't changed: I still question its existence, and I hate the stereotype that "leaplings" (those born in February 29th) can only celebrate their birthdays once every 4 years. It's a cruel stereotype and might even psychologically impact these special people born on this special day.

I mean, there are even movies centered around this day which further reinforce this stereotype: "February 29", a Korean horror movie about some recurring horrific event that only occurs once every 4 years because of falling on that day, and "29 Februari", some patriotic Malaysian movie about a dude who literally ages once every 4 years due to the day of his birth (meaning he had 4 times the average lifespan of a normal human being). And yeah, I've heard about that dude from Pirates of Penzance who was contracted to be a pirate until his 21st birthday, but because he's also a leapling, that means he's stuck with them until he's 84 years old.

Again, in my opinion, we should change this preconception that leaplings can't have their birthdays any other years than every four years. They should be allowed to have their birthdays on either February 28th or March 1st (or both) during non-leap years. If you were born in February 29th, please, tell me about it. Tell me so that I can rightfully wish you a happy birthday between February 28th and March 1st in those non-leap years. Because everyone deserves birthday wishes, even leaplings in non-leap years.

It's that day of the year again...
