Alphys wanted to try to make a robot that had full AI, unlike Mettaton, so she started on one. After a few attempts, she finally made one that had decent AI. She decided that instead of designing it after an anime human, she'd design it after one of the monsters from one of her animes.

And, yes, I did design this character after Gaster Blaster Sans. Sue me.
